Walker showed more by the age of 20, before his breakout year in 2012, than McKernan has by the age of 22.

I happily agree that ruckmen take longer to develop. For some reason most ruckmen don't seem to "come good" until the age of 25. That doesn't hold true to the same degree for KPPs. There are many, many, many KPP forwards who have achieved more than McKernan has at the same age.
Name me the current quality KPP players or ruckmen in the AFL who are 22 & under...

Given the role he is expected to play , a comparison to Tippett would be fairer.

I have no idea of that comparison BTW
Not really a great comparison. Tippett was a year older than Smack when he was drafted. He'd also played less than 20 games of Australian Rules Football in his life, while Smack was brought up on the game.

Mind you, he stacks up about even when compared with James Sellar...

Name me the dominant key position player/ruckmen playing in the AFL who is 22 years of age & under? Big men gernally take longer to develop & need to be patient. Been plenty who have been traded/delisted before they fully-developed (eg. Port with Giles).

Agree though he has now been given a great opportunity - let's hope he can grab it & play some consistent football. We don't need him to be a super-star, but a solid contributor who knows his role to the team.

We have 2 dominant KPP in our side under 22 (Talia/Walker).

Other Key Position players who have been dominant before their 23rd birthday include Jonathon Brown, Patrick Ryder, Mathew Pavlich, Roughhead, Franklin, Tom Hawkins, Jack Riewoldt, Nick Riewoldt, Josh Kennedy.

Players who also started to show a fair bit in the year they turned 23 which is what Smack is turning in September - are Sandilands, Crameri, Travis Cloke, Goodes (won the brownlow - kind of borderline KPP though).

There have been plenty of KPP that have shown plenty before their 23rd birthday (or the year they turned 23).

Plenty = vast minority.

That statement is like Wayne Swan saying we will make plenty from the resources mining tax...

Smack was drafted in 2008, so I'll start with his immediate peers and work my way forwards.. The definition of "quality" is subjective. I'll just go with "has a better record than McKernan" (which is equally subjective).

2008
Watts (was quality, ruined by Melbourne)
NicNat
Hurley
Vickery
Davis
Schoenmakers
Zac Clarke
Cornelius

2009
Talia
Menzel
Gunston (OK.. borderline as a KPP)
Reid (Sydney's)

** This was noted to be a very thin draft for KPPs. Butcher was the only one to be selected in the top-10.

2010
Darling

2011 & 2012
Too early to tell

At least this year will give us an indication of whether he will end up as trade bait or become a first 22 player
Shouldn't be too hard to offload for something decent if he doesn't meet the AFC's expectations now his No.1 Fan Rendell is at the Pies, could be part of the Daisy Thomas trade?? ;)

Daisy is a free agent, so we don't need to trade for him ;)

So DJ apart from being a critic where do you stand .
So lets see if game to come out and say he going to be a star and what as - FWD -- Ruck or where .
I for one will stand up and say wrong if by some chance becomes the player we need and many think he will .
Although showed a little more on Sunday and will be given a good go I still think although got some talent definitely lacking in a lot of areas especially between the ears.

I always been a fan. He has more talent then Kurtly did. Just hasn't had the same Gold Pa.... I mean opportunity.
He'll be top Ruck Forward moving forward.

Walker showed more at 18 than any forward I had seen since Tredrea

Yes DJ if he makes it will be in that role.
What annoys me about other posters saying all ruckman take time to mature.
Well McKernan is not and ever will be a no1 knock ruckman .
Even on Sunday in his best game only got around 5 hit outs.
