Smallest Crowd Ever?

I know this thread started as a bit of a joke, but Dees supporters should hang their heads in shame (or merge and get it over and done with), if they don't turn up. All clubs have dark years, and that's when supporters have to hang in there.

Melbourne vs Fremantle have played 10 games in Melbourne.

The average crowd is 17,775

I think a crowd of under 10,000 may be likely. Weather says it will be cold, Sunday afternoon doesn't exactly pull big numbers, and probably especially won't pull MCC as there is church for most of them I would think.

The Fitzroy v Fremantle game in 1996 in the lowest crowd I could remember, which was a touch over 5,000. The lowest drawing game I can remember attending was Round 1 1997 Dogs v Freo at the then Optus Oval. There was about 8,500 there.

Lucky the game isn't on a cold Mother's Day, then some records could be broken.

I dare say R14 Melbourne v Brisbane Lions and R17 Melbourne v North Melbourne will get small crowds.

Will Melbourne get less than 300,000 spectators this year for the first time since 1987?

I know it is a little off topic, but I was researching some RL crowds yesterday and the South Queensland Crushers drew a little over 2,600 to a game at Lang Park in 1997.

Unoffically, about 300 to a game in 1899 at Corio where St.Kilda scored the first point and Geelong scored the next 162.

Possibly a record low crowd, and a record low score (0.1.1)

Worst Home & Away Crowds (http://stats.rleague.com/afl/crowds/summary.html#03)
2,000 Hawthorn v Melbourne Glenferrie Oval 1941
2,000 Collingwood v Hawthorn Victoria Park 1942
2,500 Hawthorn v Melbourne Glenferrie Oval 1942
2,500 Western Bulldogs v Hawthorn Yarraville Oval 1942
2,500 Geelong v Hawthorn Corio Oval 1935

So i think we can all safely assume that the record will be broken this weekend :p

Poor old Hawks. Had some of the worst. 4 of those were during the War, so they really shouldn't be included.

Be interesting to get some statistics from when the VFL changed to the AFL in 1990 and onwards.

From my research....

3059: Brisbane vs Footscray, Carrara, R9 1992 (IIRC, remember the lady who dropped her pie on her jumper that was captured on camera? Think this was the game)
3876: Brisbane vs Fitzroy, Carrara, R2 1992
4349: Brisbane vs Sydney, Carrara, R23 1992
4603: Brisbane vs Adelaide, Carrara, R21 1992
4721: Brisbane vs Footscray, Carrara, R24 1991
4902: Brisbane vs Melbourne, Carrara, R12 1992
5083: Fitzroy vs Fremantle, Whitten, R8 1996
5272: Sydney vs Brisbane, SCG, R20 1990

3059: Brisbane vs Footscray, Carrara, R9 1992
3876: Brisbane vs Fitzroy, Carrara, R2 1992
4349: Brisbane vs Sydney, Carrara, R23 1992

4721: Brisbane vs Footscray, Carrara, R24 1991
4902: Brisbane vs Melbourne, Carrara, R12 1992

And the AFL want a new team on the Gold Coast... hmm...

The MCG website, estimates a crowd between 15,000-20,000

brisbane were shit in the early 90s!!

And who is to say this new team isn't going to be at the start? It's alright getting X amount of good picks in the draft but it's going to take years to develop and gel to make the brand truly marketable.

23,000 at the Gabba on a perfect Sunday in April in a game they were fully expected to win? Dissapointing and this team not long ago played in 4 consecutive Grand Finals. For most in Brisbane, AFL is a novelty and worth having a look at once a year and maybe checking the weekend newspapers to check the results but that's where the love ends.

Not the smallest but I think I remember about 6,800 at a Richmond V West Coast game in the early to mid 90s.

where do you find these crowd stats? id be interested to know how many turned up to see the kangaroos have a "home" game against the saints at the SCG in the late 90s.

it was attrocious weather and i remember that there were very very few people there.

a) The AFL say they wont be shit.

b) 23,000 was not that bad, but I am seriously over that topic.:o

a) Just because the AFL say they are going to pretty much be a powerhouse from their first season doesn't necessarily mean they will be.

b) I've got nothing against the Lions or anyone in Queensland for that matter and feel sorry for the small percentage of AFL lovers up there who understand, appreciate and love the game. Facts are though the percentage of people who don't care for the game far outweighs those who do appreciate it, which is going to cause problems for the new team - like it did for the Bears.

Funny how people who have very little idea abouth the GC Football community profess to know so much all of a sudden.

If you believe everything you read or hear in the media, I might remind you that these are the same journos that you so freely bag every time they mention something about your team.

I live in the GC football scene, and while I believe that the AFL are pushing to enter a little too soon, the 2015 target was better IMO. Junior & senior participation is well up over the past 10 years and the game has never been stronger.

Much has changed on the Gold Coast during the last 15 years. Firstly, the club being established will actually be a Gold Coast team (subject to stadium avalability:rolleyes:) and not something branded as Brisbane and playing 100km from home.

The AFL really want this to work. Andy D believes it will be his legacy (good luck) and the AFL will trow mega $$$ (rightly or wrongly) behind it.

The GC17 bid is up and running, and while my support of the Lions will never change, I do support the concept (although a little soon) of football on the Gold Coast, and believe a good support base will eventuate.

Well, I know some will come back with this and that, and if you have any real experience with the local AFL market up here I will be happy to hear from you (although we have probably spoken before). I will be heading off to the GC17 forum on Wednesday night and will let you know what happens.

My Dad used to work on 3LO (now 774ABC) and I remember him dragging me along as a kid to a Fitzroy vs Brisbane Bears game at the Western Oval back in 1996. Crowd could not have been much more than 6K. When I think about that game I realise just how far the AFL has come in the decade since.
