You have to admire Smartys enthousiasm and commitment - according to the news last night - Nigel Smart is back in training 2 weeks before he is required.

Great news to hear he is fired up for 2004!

Last night's Sports Tonight seemed to make a bit of a deal about it. Saying about three times that he wasn't expected to be there for a couple of weeks.

Even though the training schedule was released last week. It would seem research is not channel ten's strong point.

It's good to see Smart so motivated. Particularly since he's one whose endevour is questioned from to time to time. He obviously wants to go out on a bang.

Its his last season so he might as well go out on a high. Lets face it, if he doesn't perform he will cop a lot of flack from everyone for playing on another year and starving a youngster of an opportunity.

But he could be helping the club at the same time by helping the salary cap, as he is on the vet's list...

I must have missed the rule change about veteran listed players playing as amateurs.

But we would have only had 1 vet if Smart retired, so he is only affectively using up half of his salary in the cap. Next year will be a different story, when Roo can go on the vets list.

Bullpoo.

Let's take a wild guess at how much Smart is on - say $150K (that's close to the average salary. i.e $5.8m between 38 players)
half that, because he's a senior citizen and you get $75K.

That's still more than the minimum salary than his most likely replacement Aidan Parker would get if he was on the senior list.

If you think Smart kept Parker off the list, then in terms of the salary cap he's not doing anything for the AFC.

Have to agree. Smart's decision to continue will be very harshly judged if he is unable to perform at a satisfactory level.

Smart's history is littered with hot and cold periods. Whilst I feel he should have retired, let's hope the champ goes out on fire.

How??????

Even half of his salary which is counted as part of the salary cap would be more than Aidan Parker would be on. So in actual fact I see Smart as using up more cap space than Parker would have.

Next year our salary cap should receive a major ease, with Smart, Carey and possibly Burns set to retire. That would clear some $500K

If McLeod hadn't screwed the club Parker would be on the list now......why blame Smart?

I'd say Smart's performance this year proved he's by far our BEST defender & the match commitee seemed to support that!

Seems a strange use of logic to equate $75000 net which some people think Smart is costing the footy club against McLeod's $500,000....... or is it some of you think McLeod is untouchable?

Parker supposedly was approached by 4 other clubs & yet we still couldn't offer him a spot.......

In my opinion McLeod played this year solely for himself both on the ground & off it!

God you lot are critical of our club champions

Smart had every right to continue.
Couldn't agree more.

Smart is still part of our best 22 players & until his form drops off on a consistent basis, as a club legend deserves the respect of a club champion.

The fact that he has started training early shows that he is fully-motivated to do well in 2004. As we know about Smarty, for him ability isn't really much of an issue - it's about getting his mind right. All the signs look right, that he is continuing for the right reasons.
