Nigel IMO is our 3rd best defender (even at his age).
I recon he has paid his penance and should come back in!
After all we still want our BEST team on the park DONT WE!!!!!
Youth is a good policy but it's not as important as fielding our best available team.
Come back Nige all is forgiven.

Yeah - the difference made by Harts return does confirm to me that Smart should came back in to the side.........

I'm genuinely surprised that he has not been picked for this many rounds in a row now..........craziness.

Back to the topic after being hijacked ... again.

Who would we drop for Smart? We have Kenny & Hound in the key defensive posts, & have Hentschel & Hart who can play on the 3rd/4th talls or a small. I just don't see room for him in our line-up.

Massie out Smart in simple!
I know that Massie hasn't been used as a defender that much lately but it gives us greater options; Johncok forward/centre etc.
Smart deserves better that the way he is currently being treated! and he is a better player than a lot of people who have been getting games in front of him.

I completely disagree with this statement and all the chorus of people saying after all he's done for the club he shouldn't be treated that way. But, the fact is, Smarty has been playing poor footy since the second half of last year. I have no doubt he would've been dropped for the Hawthorn game last year except that it was his testimonial match, so he spent 90% of it on the bench.

Our defense is playing very well and I don't think bringing Smarty back in will be any benefit for the team. And by all accounts he hasn't been setting the world on fire back at Souths.

I think the consesus is Massie will go out when Begley is fit. And I'd rather have Begs in the side than Smarty, so from the weekend's side who goes out to fit Nigel in?
Hentschel - No way
Hart - Come on
Bassett - Starting to regain his form
Johncock - Nope
Torney - Nope

I was one pushing for Nigel to retire at the end of last year, I didn't see a spot for him in our side and I still don't.

No need to duck IMO. I think you were correct - Smarty has played one season too long.

I just can't see a spot in our defence for him either at the moment.

Hopefully though, there will be an opportunity to play him in a home ground match prior to the end of the year, at which time Smarty should announce his retirement from AFL footy, so we can all give him a big send-off as thanks for all the good years he's given us. He deserves that.

I can't see Smarty accepting a token game just to say goodbye. IMO he would either want his spot on merit or not have it at all.

token game for what is now a token player...he either takes it or leaves it?? there is no way he'll get in the side in place of a youngster (partic as they are performing ok atm...)

his arrogance to think he could command a spot this year is coming back to haunt him...

good player for the club, should hve gone last year

Disagree.

Hentschel is clearly third with a fully fit and in form Bassett coming in at four. Then you have the likes of Torney, Massie and Begley to consider (flanker types with a much longer shelf life than Nige anyway).

Smart should've gone out when his old South Adelaide mate Bicks did, akin to Jammo and Lippy's farewell in 99.

Good to see youve come around on the tanking bandwagon.

Moral victories get you nowhere.
There is a difference between giving a handfull of youngsters a go while still trying to win. And playing youngsters when the results are not important.

I am against tanking.

Wasn't it in part his arrogance that made him a champion? It won't haunt him.

Welcome aboard, mudman!

I agree with you entirely that supreme confidence bordering on arrogance is an essential part of the Nigel Smart makeup. It was what made hom an all-Australian his first year when other young men may have been intimidated by being given the job on Dunstall and his ilk in their first year. It's what made take on players running out of defence game after gaee, and what gave him the confidence and ability to shut down Koutafides in his prime.

I think I heard a quote from Smart once along the lines of "I don't think any player in the league can beat me one-on-one".

I doubt he's haunted - he's always seemed to be philosophical enough about his footy career.

I think Smart should have retired last year, but none the less has had a stellar AFL/AFC career and will doubt get a few home games later in the year, he will be sent off in style with and inspirational win against Port in Rnd 22:D ;)

Playing Smart ATM is not wise due to the fact we have a very good defence ATM only Massie would be not on song ATM and begely would be more likely to come in for him than Smart, Smart must bide his time and realise the end in nigh and he will get an approprite send off for the champion he is:)
