Teflon - I agree that giving the guy oxygen is stupid, but I also think one of the big strengths of BF is to give everyone who visits this board a host of arguments to use should they meet such an idiot in their day to day lives. Cause it's amazing how many people believe what they read in the papers.

And if last year hasn't taught us the danger of ignoring our opponents, then we have learnt little. The AFL's strategy of belittling and discrediting North Melbourne started a good year before their relocation agenda became even remotely public. A marketing genius once told me that there is American research on exactly how many times the average person has to hear a message before they believe it to be true. Anyone who thinks that the continued use of the words 'cash strapped' is coincidence is dreaming.

But I'm not overjoyed at the prospect of this thread degenerating into an argument about what Lidge would or wouldn't have done - and I'm pretty sure the thread has served its original purpose of reminding us all what an idiot Smith is. Mods?

Fair enough KL, but can you see my point as to why it is unfair to bring the mans name up like that?

Am I all alone on this?

I mean, I would NEVER bring his name up in a disagreement with a fellow North member.

Personally I think Horace's argument was perfectly valid without any need to reference what Lidge would have done. I also agree with your statement in a later post to the effect that Horace would not have meant any offence. Horace is one of the absolute gentlemen on this board - and as passionate about the club as anyone I have ever seen. So I am reluctant to sound critical of him in any way.

But here's the thing. I, like many here, adored Lidge (and unlike many here, I knew him pretty well) - and I have to admit, I am really, really uncomfortable with his name becoming somehow sacrosanct - as if a 'Lidge' approved action is somehow more worthy than any other.

And yes, I think using his name in this context does make for a pretty unfair argument - cause we're not arguing the issues anymore. (which is a shame, cause the discredit him or ignore him debate is a pretty interesting one).

Okay, I have just had a chance to read through the uber-fascinating, recent additions to this thread. (Rolling eyes thingy.) Yes, quite the digression. And I agree that the thread has run its course/served its purpose. Probably could have got there on my own but, hey, thanks for the invaluable advice, folks.
