Smith exits via Free Agency

Yet, somehow, the Cats complete lack of flags in 10 years doesn't stop them stroking the Cats' privates...loudly and repetitively. "Look at their H+A record!!! They are our overlords! Waaaah!"

Give it a rest..
You mean like they hadn't won since 63 in 07 but by 2011 it somehow become 3 flags in 5 years, instead of 3 flags in 48 years.

At least that yellow and black mob won something when half of big footy was born, before their current 3

There was one interesting player named Malcolm Hill who was a ruckman in the 1961 premiership team. He came over and played a couple of seasons for Sturt in the SANFL, then bought the Berri Hotel in the Riverland. Jack Oatey used to bring him to Adelaide as a finals specialist and he played in their 1966, 1968 and 1969 premiership teams. He played in three premierships in the space of only 4 matches.
Great insight Adelaide thanks for that info

Yeah, I wasn't trying to make any sort of point. It's just that I posted earlier that I was tired of seeing Hawks premiership stars ending their careers at other clubs. I then began to make a list out of curiosity and was staggered by the number I found. I just thought it would be interesting. :)

I was more referring the thread in general not you or anyone in particular. I loved the post I am a sucker for stats love them however they pop up so cheers :)

No issues with Smith leaving, it is what it is.
His best is behind him imo (just) and if he thinks he can snag another flag with the cats, good luck to him.
The days of players being loyal to the one club are largely a relic of the past. That's just the reality of the free agency world (and ruthless list management) that we live in.
I wish ex Hawthorn player Smith well.

So glad we got him, the second piece of the puzzle is Jeremey Cameron to support Tommy Hawkins, but Isaac will be a fantastic addition adding run and carry through our midfield complementing Danger, Menegola and Parfitt.
Respects to the mighty Hawks and all the best for next season.

Sure mate, you're the hero we deserve.
No I’m not a hero. I’m just saying I have a right to criticise a footballers choice I’m not saying anything inappropriate, so I don’t understand why people like you have a problem with people calling it how they see it.

Silly boy, our (use to be) Smithy boy! Associated with Pickering.
Pickering is racking up the players that chase big contracts. Starting to think maybe he’s influencing them to what’s best for him rather than them just an opinion not accusing him of anything but when you look at the players he had that were happy at their club then just left out of nowhere it makes you wonder.

What rubbish.
Its his career, not Bigfooty.
Never said it wasn’t. But again your missing the point just like he’s allowed to do what he wants, I can have any opinion I want so it’s not rubbish. What’s rubbish is people like you who think we need to smile and be happy when these things happen, well guess what I won’t just because you’ve (Smith in this case) achieved things at our club doesn’t mean I must like every choice you make.I wish no bad things happen to him but he has changed how I think of him as a hawthorn supporter. He probably doesn’t give a crap about my opinion and that’s fine.

I did a quick count this afternoon, and I listed 40 Hawthorn premiership players since 1971 who ended their playing careers at other VFL/AFL clubs. And that doesn't include Moncrieff who went to St.Kilda but didn't play a league game. That's more than I expected to find.

I know players move around a lot these days, but more than half of these were from the 1980s and before.
How many ended up at our biggest rivals and had a choice about going there.

Wish Isaac the best apart from a couple of kicks he never let us down (and for god sake they were one off kicks from a fair distance). But I'd take that one kick in the 2013 GF every bloody day of the week which was further out over the other non GF kicks.

Good bloke, top ten player across 3 GF's. You can't ask for anything more.

Reading this thread was hard work.

Pick any five random games against Geelong between 2007 and 2017, then think of players like Lewis, Mitchell, Hodge, Cyril, Poppy, Buddy, Roughy, Birchall and I could go on. Picture it.

Then process this. Smith leaves for Geelong.

wtf

The club is so weakened from that period he even considers it much less does it.

I say this confidently. There isn’t a poster on this site whose proclaimed and advocated the incredible leadership of this club since Clarko came. But we are not only so far from what he created even back in 2005 when we finished bottom four, you’ve all largely forgotten it and someone like Smith goes to play for Geelong (someone we went to war with for 10 years) for no obvious reason.

We are such a sad shadow of everything that started in Kokoda in 2005, I don’t know what to make of it. But I’m unashamedly saying that my 25 year membership scarf ended last year as I was strapped from Covid like most but I would have found a way if I wasn’t watching the s**t I had to either.

Burgoyne is easily one of my favourite ever players but the decision to sign him for another year is just ridiculous and further speaks to my upset at our complete implosion. I am clinging to the hope Clarko had a bad year and we will see our Hawks back in round one again. Don’t need to win, but we need to see that culture and relentless winning passion again or I hope Kennett makes a swift decision and retire my favourite ever coach.

Whilst I’m ranting I’ll also add that players like Hardwick, Nash, Wingard, Scully etc who continue to turn up to games half arsed should be given little to no more chances. I’d rather a complete 7 year rebuild than watch another year of St Kilda or Melbourne in Hawks colours with guys who don’t bleed for the jumper.

And don’t compare Smith to the moves of Hodge, Mitchell or Lewis.

Clarko made those things happen largely against the will of our all time greats.

Smith isn’t even in the same league and walks out the door to our absolute enemy. Firstly I get why he was overlooked as captain which I heard he was not happy about abs secondly it shows how headless our club is at the moment.

Hodge retired and then changed his mind for $700 000 a year for two years plus a job at Brisbane for as long as he wants. Clarko was shattered. Mitchell was pumped for the opportunity. Lewis was shocked to even be asked but it was just put to him as a possible opportunity to get long term security which he did. None were against their will.
