Enough shit talking, but this subforum is actually called "Coaching, fitness, club support and everything else".

And quite clearly we're referring to working out/gym related exercises, especially in this thread.

On to his actual point, there are quite a few reasons you'd want to use the Smith machine to bench press off the top of my head.

1) You have no spot, aren't comfortable not using collars and letting the weight fall if you fail

2) You want to target a specific area that the machine allows you to target

3) Support muscles are failing and you want to isolate the chest

4) You want to do declines but the squat rack is taken :P

5) Apparently* it's ok if you plateau.

For the record, I generally do db presses, but will use a bb for flat, incline is almost always db.

Either way, it's a piece of equipment with a few uses, no point getting mad at it lol.

Edit: Also

I'd say they're the primary reasons Arnold trained. Simply because being a bigger "size", symmetry (aesthetic) and looking good are more important than what you lift for his comps. If he's a weakling, :'( - I'm pretty stuffed!
Correct. But if that everything else includes bodybuilding then I will start a thread about how awesome Chris Judd is or how General Discussion is the powerhouse of Bigfooty.*

*Seriously it is though.

Start a thread on The Wiggles for all we care. If a thread doesn't belong it will get moved or closed by a mod.

Weight training falls under the fitness category, and weight/gym related threads generally get moved to this forum.

I dont care what anyone says don't use the smith machine to bench press. If you cant bench a barbell or dumbells, try pushups..

If you "train" to look good or "for size" you are a weakling.

At the end of the day this is BIGFOOTY.COM not BIGBICEPS or BIGHEAD or BIGANYTHINGEXCEPTFOOTY.

There are literally hundreds/thousands of websites out there dedicated to narcissists who like to think that they are strong because they have big arms. GO THERE.

Give practical advice here for playing football, as said many times before 9/10 times when someone is on this board asking for advice they are not asking for bodybuilding advice, they just don't know the difference.

- so...clearly having not read any of the thread at all, your solution to injured/weakened/dodgy shoulder joints that make benching difficult is...do pushups? what a ****ing genius, you should get a job at the AIS. I await your fascinating insights into how to do dumbell presses when the weight will be 55kg + dumbells while training alone....again...with already dodgy shoulders. Deadset you are a ****ing moron - read the thread before you post.

- Ironically, aussie rules football players are actually the weaklings when it comes to the weights room...biceps aside. You know, if we're generalizing.

- If someone comes into forum asking for weight lifting advice, then that's what they get from people like me. Then when they want more specialised advice such as footy oriented strength and conditioning, then that's when other guys like cptkirk/whomb/mccuzzy etc are more helpful.

You're a newb both here and in the gym obviously. Nothing wrong with that, but you should read more and post less. And you are clueless if you think this forum is for football only. In fact, as far as i know, most of the knowledgeable people in here don't even play footy anymore.

Quit bitching about the threads on here.

It's a fitness board. Whatever the motive behind it, weight training is related to fitness.

Both of the people that have complained in this thread have offered almost nothing to these threads, so I'd probably look at doing that before derailing other threads.

Yes it is a fitness board. A footy fitness board. When starting a thread the prefixes Auskick, Coaching, Fitness/Training, Fundraising, Injuries and Playing. This is a sub-forum of MyFooty. I don't know how you get bodybuilding out of my footy.
And I don't offer anything because I have F*** all to offer.

"Fitness/Training", exactly.

There are hundreds of threads on football training. A few on bodybuilding is fine.
And I don't offer anything because I have F*** all to offer.
You got that right.

Kaydub didn't get what he wanted for Christmas!

I'm all for a a bodybuilding board, make it happen those that are so opposed to us being here, and then you narrowed minded, incompetent guys can get back to your business on this board ;)

FWIW, I train for strength and vanity as do most footballers

I honestly dont see why it is so hard to understand that people want advice related to bodybuilding here about as much as people want footy related advice on bodybuilding.com. People interested in Bodybuilding here are the minority, get over it.

My insight would be to stop pressing 55kg+ dumbells above your head, whats the practicality in that? If you have a dodgy shoulder and are doing 55kg dumbell presses nobody can help you cause you are a silly goose.

Yes, weight training is. Bodybuilding isnt. Ill bitch about it all I want "Moderator"

In fact, as far as i know, most of the knowledgeable people in here don't even play footy anymore
Thats fine, if they used to play they can probably offer practical advice related to footy. Have you EVER played? Or do you just stalk sport-related forums to give narrow-minded bodybuilding advice?

How do you chest press a db above your head? Do you even understand this thread is about alternative chest training? Pushups if they are used at all are used for endurance training. You won't build strength or size from them once you can do plenty. It's like benching 40kg's forever and expecting to get stronger.

This thread is about chest presses which is weight training. Who ever said anything about bodybuilding? The last thing i am is a bodybuilder. That's Whombs department. Either way, "weight training" covers all weight training, it is irrelevant whether it's bb based, or powerlifting, or specialised sport related strength training....it's all weight training.

I gotta laugh at the narrow-minded comment. Coming from a kid who said to do pushups instead of smith machine bench. And coming from the kid who says i shouldn't do heavy dumbells because...because it's hard?

See if you can keep up: weight training is what we do. Bodybuilding, powerlifting, contact sport etc are simply the styles of training we use to achieve certain goals. A bodybuilder is training for aesthetics, symmetry, size, definition. A powerlifter is training for power and strength. A serious contact sport player is training for functional strength, speed, burst power, endurance. All 3 of those styles will cross over to a large degree. They're all going to do bench, rows, leg presses, tricep extensions, deads etc.

I think a while back we tried to get a specific weights forum but were told/moved to the fitness/training forum here. You can't have a specific forum for every little thing involved with fitness and training.

In the end, this thread is about weight lifting. It's not like i hijacked a footy twerp thread. I don't jump into footy threads and start complaining that all you guys train is chest and biceps and you all have southern cross tattoos, do i? So stay the **** out of my threads.

Wow... when did people start getting so carried away with a bit of talk on the threads here about bodybuilding?

The forums are slow as it is, why make it so there's 1 post a week?

And it's ****ing Christmas, it's sad to see people jump on a forum and slog it out as though there's nothing better to do at this time of year :(.

If someone wants some info on bodybuilding, strength training, endurance training or whatever, here seems fine.

Further splitting forums into subforums will only make them less used.

Wait, What?

I'm the one that bumped this thread for an alternative to lower the load on my delts on chest days

If it's bad, eliminate flat bench completely for a while. I've had to do it a few times, but that's because of the joints not the delt muscles themselves

the only to lower delts use on chest day is to decrease pressing which leaves you with ordinary exercises like flies, crossovers etc

This is another reason to train movements over muscles, so train pressing over chest, delts and tri's individually

it's more efficient which is what a lot of people lack in their training
