Looks like he very intentionally touches him near the groin area. There’s probably an argument that Blakey does too.

It’s really weird shit. You should be able to play footy and expect you won’t have opponents trying to poke you in the groin/arse.

I wonder if they went to both players, both said yeah I did it, and don’t want to take it further because they know they’re in the wrong. Therefore the AFL have decided to go with a slap on the wrist behind close doors and put up the “nothing to see here” sign publicly.

Personally I’ve never seen or heard of this happening in a footy game I’ve played, so I really hope this isn’t commonplace at AFL level.

There's been an occasional case, Touk Miller grabbed Zorko by the genitals during a tackle a few years back. Pretty sure he got a suspension for it but not certain.

Oof, I was hoping it was just an unfortunate freeze frame from an accidental motion or something. Thats a bit worse. As you say though, if they were both being a bit odd for laughs, they would have gotten a good talking to.

I reckon they wanted to try and quickly sweep it under the rug, by issuing an all clear before the major news bulletins that night it means only one story on it, which is "this happened but the AFL said there wasn't enough to the footage to be sure so that's the end of it" instead of a story on the night "this happened and the AFL are looking at it" and then the outcome article, then the tribunal articles when its challenged, etc

they probably don't want it to spread it wider than the footy nuffy community. I've never watched 90s/00s NRL but know the name Hopoate and what it's associated with.

The slow motion footage of contact is 11 frames (i.e. less than half a second).

If you are 202 cm and can Hopoate someone for half a second while in the act of falling backwards, you are a superhero.

If we are judging it on slow-mo... what was Blakey doing first? In real time, it's just awkward fumbling from both of them in a human tangle.

Dude that was not just a human tangle. Even in real time it was weird. Smith's hands didn't get there by chance, looking at his falling angle it literally makes no sense for his hand to be there let alone having his wrist angle in the direction it was. He was caught lacking.
