With speed it's basically only opinion against opinion at this stage, I think Smith would dominate completely, he looks that tall to me

Well not really. Polec actually tested quicker than Smith at draft combine.

It's possible that Smith has improved his speed since then thru professional training/muscle strength improvements etc.

Not sure if Smith has done a sprint test since but I seem to remember even in his first season, he looked a lot faster than he tested at the combine. He looks fast at all times, so I don't buy into the whole 'hitting contests at speed' theory. Would be interesting to see what he tested when fully fit.

4 odd years is a long time and considering all Polec's injuries wouldn't be surprised if that's the complete opposite now

It's too early to make the call on Smith vs. Polec given that young Jared has been held back so much at Brisbane, but if he keeps improving at this rate he could be a damn good player.
Polec is going to be a gun. He has all the weapons needed but he now just needs to string good game after good game together, and hopefully an injury free year or two. Wether he went to PAP or us, it good to see some talent coming home.

Gun - jury still out

I reserve gun tags for players who can influence against the tide, Polec plays well when Port plays well

However the question remains can Polec play equally well when Port are under real pressure

Firstly comparing Danger to Ebo is like comparing... well Danger to Ebo. Both are different types of players, but atm, Danger is well above Ebo on output during their careers, however Ebo may be closing this gap, alot of the work he does goes unnoticed as he isnt the number 1 player in the club.

Back on topic, Smith and Polec are both great young players. Due to injury Smith would be slightly ahead of Polec, but if the start to his season continues all year, will be neck and neck. Would love to have Smith at Port, but happy with Polec. I agree with the OP though, that in years to come, there will be a friendly but fierce rivalry between these two mates to out do each other, which will be good for both clubs!

Smith's having the better year and in a bottom side that's a fine achievement.

Hope Brodie keeps it up, looks a steal at pick 14
