Can we just get a Port thread on this board and be done with it?

Ebert is in AA form right now. He's Port's equivalent of Joel Corey - quietly playing at an elite level while the flashier players get all the accolades.

Smith is miles ahead of Polec and extending his lead by the day.

We can talk about any player from any team, other than PAP and its fine. We mention a PAP player and hordes of the filfth decend upon our board trolling to their hearts content and the mods and bleeding heart Crows supporters tell the Crows posters off. Thats how we roll i guess.

Obviously Smith has played a lot more than Polec so he's got that on him, but personally I'd still rather have Smith. He can kick the ball well over 60 metres, rarely misses a target, is slightly taller, is quicker. All Polec has over Brodie is that he's a lefty, which is basically nothing.

I think Polec will become a great outside midfielder for years to come, but Smith can play anywhere in my opinion with that extra height of his. But just then I thought I better check Polec's actual height and he's still 189cm, so Smith only is 5cm taller which isn't all that much. Back to the point, I still think he could play as a lead up forward similar to Lynch or play that quarterback role like he does at the moment, or even as an inside mid.

Imagine if we had them both though, would be interesting to see where Sando would've played the two of them then add Mackay to that. Probably Mackay and Polec on the wings then Smith as the quarterback... All in all Smith will be the way better player and achieve a lot more

Smith is showing signs of being elite. Polec would have been a great get, but if having to chose between the two, Smith any day for me.

Once Kerridge is released from his run with role he may reveal that he has many similar attributes to Ebert and is our clubs most similar player.

Everyone seems to be forgetting they have played two rabbles (Carlton and Brisbane) as well a pathetic Crows outfit, his game against North was about his 2013 average.

The AFC website has Brodie Smith listed as 194cm. Surely that can't be right?!

I wouldn't have thought he was that tall. That's 9cm bigger than what Danger is listed as.

Edit - That said, Sam Shaw is apparently 193cm, and whilst you can't see how their legs are positioned in this photo, they do look similar in height, and both are comfortably taller than Sando who was listed at 185cm.

I reckon with a group which includes Ebert, Polec, Hartlett, Boak, Wines, Gray, Monfries and Winguard Port will win at least one premiership in the next 6-8 years. They, along with GWS, GC and possibly Essendon/Collingwood, will be the dominant clubs.

I see a little bit of Geelong 2007 in this current Port lineup.

Smith is one who has leadership written all over him, good character and is getting pretty close to elite football wise.

Smith is not 194cm that's a mistake.

I think they're both 189cm. And they'd be the same speed, if anything Polec's first 5 metres would be quicker.

With speed it's basically only opinion against opinion at this stage, I think Smith would dominate completely, he looks that tall to me

Polec has better footskills. If you watch him closely he never misses a target and is lethal around goals. Smith, although not far behind, trails him there. Smith would have more penetration.

Polec is thriving as a loose man in a side that is running very hard and creating lots of space for each other. Time will tell how he goes when he is closely checked and the game is tight and congested.

Smith will also have to learn to be closely checked.

Does anybody know where they were both tipped to go in the draft?

To me it looks like they both have great foot skills, but different. Would be scary in the same side. Both have huge upside, but I reckon Smiths in front currently - perhaps because he's got more games under the belt, perhaps its a maturity thing.

I'd suggest smith is a longer kick, but they are both great at getting it over distance quickly. I'd say (without watching as much of smith) that Polec has him covered for being able to kick balls off his axis. Look at the goal he kicked v Brisbane as an example. I was watching him warming up pre-game with Hartlett and he was hitting him up 50m on a 30 degree angle to the straight line simply by adjusting his kicking leg trajectory. .. was quite interesting.

Dangerfield/Ebert, obviously Danger is widely regarded as the better player, but I don't think the gap is as immense as some would suggest. For instance - right now I'd take Eberts disposal over Dangerfield without thinking and think he's probably a better endurance player while Dangerfields more explosive.
I'd take Dangerfields attack on the ball and work in close/contested pack work, as well as his X factor etc.
One thing with Dangerfield seems to be he does bob up (normally) when needed at big times etc.

Its interesting though, statistically Dangerfield was comfortable ahead in many disposal areas several years ago, but over the past season and a half (with Ports improvement) disposal figures are almost identical or Ebert is in front.
That being said disposal counts alone mean very little and its the impact with them.

I'd also argue though that Dangerfield and Ebert are different types of players. In our list, i'd compare Dangerfield (in terms of his strongest attribute - contested football) to Wines. I'm not sure who from your side I'd equate to Ebert - maybe a Sloan/Douglas ?

They will never win a premiership if they have to rely on Butcher though. They have a 29 year old Schultz who is arguably at the highest point of his career and may or may not be around in a few years time. They really need to find a good replacement and probably find a KPP to play back so Westoff can play more as a forward.

Definitely Douglas and both would probably have exactly the same value. Danger is a completely different player imo and shouldn't be compared to Ebert.
