First point i don't agree with the fact that you should be able to sue your employer for disease linked to passive smoking unless your employer was trying to cover up the dangers and that affected your decision - but most likely when you applied for that bartending job you knew what you were getting yourself into.

Secondly i've heard a lot of pubs and clubs come out and say this will cripple the industry - but i believe it is New York where they have banned smoking in clubs and patronage has gone up 17%

Banning smoking at the G is not about cancer funkyfreo. It's about what Davew is talking about,a bit of inconvenience to others. You can't seriously suggest to me that if you're sitting next to me at the next Freo /Richmond game and I light up,m you're at risk of contracting cancer.

I understand what you're saying about barmaids allegedly being at risk. Can't this be overcome by installing the odd exhaust fan and making barmaids sign wavers not to sue.

Ok Banning smoking at the G is about selling more footy tickets - I'll grant you that.

"allegedly" - come on I can;t take you seriously if you are debating the science??

Ha ha sign away your rights to a healthy workplace. Take that to a building site and ask them to work without scaffolding or a safety rope!

So you equate the risk of getting lung cancer from passive smoking to the risk of building worker being made to work in high places without ropes.Thats the sort of melodramatic silliness that gets bought into this debate.
Granted there have been studies that show increased risk but I agree with what Dr.Nick has said. It's not like asking people to work in an asbestos mine.I'm really not interested in debating the science with you,we could both bring up studies if we could be bothered. There most likely is increased risk to barworkers,I don't think it's substantial though.

In the end smoking will be banned in pubs ,it's inevitable. It wont affect me directly. As I said above, I gave up smoking a few years ago.I just see as one more victory for the "nanny state" and I don't like it.

I'm the first to admit that barracking for Richmond :( is probably as big a health hazard as passive smoking. Maybe they'll ban that one day. :)

One of the problems with this view is that most bar staff are young people who are working because they need cash. Quite often they wouldn't even think about the smoke side of the job when taking it on regardless of whether they are smokers or not. There is no reason why passive smoking should be a danger when it is not part of the job. Preventing cigarette smoke is a general health benefit for non-smokers who work in or attend pubs and clubs, so I can't even see why its an issue.

Similarly the oft repeated "well the alcohol is bad for you as well, why don't we ban that" is ludicrous. No one "passive drinks". If you consume alcohol, it doesn't really get into the air, if you go into the pub you don't have to consume alcohol. Cigarette smoke does get into the air, and the choice to inhale the smoke is not optional. Given a pub is a public place, surely everyone has the right to go there without health issues?

surely it is a workers comp issue - just like being a labourer working on rooves.
