Anyone have any ideas why smothering would not be incuded in the scoring structure?
I know that they don't occur in great numbers in a game but they can be very important as they can prevent a kick from the opposition travelling 50 meters up the ground or even prevent a shot on goal.
Surely the act of smothering the ball has to be of some value? Take for example Adam Simpsons smother on the weekend that prevented a certain shot on goal for the Saints.
In terms of points they could be scored similar to a tackle, prehaps even a little higher and would be easy to record in terms of stats.
I suppose if anyone is able to find any stats on smothers in matches so far this year it would also be helpful.
