It's no coincidence that we're constantly being attached to small forwards and this is not simply media driven.

Maybe it's the term that we don't like or feel to be 'old hat' so let's call them forward-line specialists.
We currently have no small-medium forwards that can regularly manufacture goals out of little. We just don't.
Of course we need them do and I have little doubt the trade period will play out accordingly.

Papley is the player that would make for what I see to be, the best fit for the CFC.

Maybe we won't get the player/s we want, but we do need goal-kickers and let's not get too carried away for the 100 point 'achievements' this season to date.
It was great knocking that barrier over but it was against teams that had personnel poor back-lines, at the time we played them.

I think you’ve summed it up nicely.

The question I ask myself is do we have ANY guys on our list who have played fwd their whole career, not mids who have some goal sense like SPS, Cuners, Gibbo, Polson, Garlett or Fish, someone like a Gryan Myers who was a TAC cup sniper, kicked a bag (7 from memory) in the U18 GF?

The answer is no and I think HARKER pointed it out early in the season when Teague said in a short website clip that we were “looking” for a small forward. Look at our 2019 list and who we’ve run through there:
  • Gibbons (gun VFL mid)
  • Polson (nippy mid...and personally I think we’ve done him no service in his development)
  • Pickett (nuff said)
  • Bugg (nuff said)
  • Cuningham (midfielder)
  • Garlett (played WA U18’s as outside mid/wing/HBF)
  • LeBois is probably the closest but was still more a HFF for SA U18 and is on such a slow burn I think the fires gone out!!
I like the term you used “manufacture goals out of little” - what we’d give for a young Jeffy/Eddie combo right now.

I love what SOS has done with our list over since 2015, recruiting can be a crapshoot and you’ve gotta dig through a lot of dirt to find gems, but we have continued to get this player type wrong - starting with Gallucci as a rookie

JustaBattler - I agree 100% with your earlier post that other positions need addressing, this was more about the 1 position that our CEO has publicly stated we are searching for...not sure I’ve seen a CEO come out and say that this far out from trade period, but I could be wrong.

I also agree with you that the Pies don’t have many (Elliott maybe), neither do the Dogs, whereas Richmond have shitloads. For me it comes down to the style of game you want to play, and if we are going to have the bigs boys up forward, it makes sense to get someone Mosquitoing around there as with goal kicking/crumbing/pressure as their natural No1 skill set, not someone who is OK at it BUT can also go through the midfield

Primarily I reckon the Swans would prefer our future 1st, and Papley would cost more than this years 1st.

But It would also let us use our 1st this year for someone like Jack Martin.

Ahhh....potential V production

Martin’s like playing a Rubick’s cube on a boat in the Bermuda Triangle for me Malifice I just can’t work him out. The talent is obvious, he cracks in hard, but he’s never reached production levels that justify the price tag and likely trade cost.

I’d love to know his GPS numbers and his training ethic etc, and or course there’s the GC development factor !!

I once played with a bloke nicknamed Moses because at training the seas just parted in front of him and during those end to end competitive drills he was amazing with his skills, workrate and tackling etc....but get him to a game and he’d get it 15 times...does your head in...and as much as I appreciate Martin’s talent, I can’t shake the feeling he’ll be our Moses.

Wouldn’t surprise me if we were targeting him to provide that speed and skills to transition off HBF rather than as a forward

HAppy to leave that decision to others and then comment from the cheap seats :):)

Perfect for us. I’d sign him in a heartbeat if he wanted to move

Yeah I agree but think he’s firmly in the unrealistic category.

Of the candidates in poll, the one situation I would really like so more info on is in regard to Tippa, how can he not be re-signed this late in the season. I hope we are all over his manager.

Are the Bombers really flying that close to the salary cap? Is he asking too much?? Just stands out an an obvious re-signing.

Papley & Gray would be great.

Martin could be that player off half back that you are looking for JustaBattler?

Dunno Judda - I am liking SPS rotating through there- as I would since I called for it in pre-season as soon as Docherty got re-injured :p Carton hasn't got the picks or currency to score both Papley and Gray - I'd say Papley is 85% done deal at Sydney anyway - too valuable and important in their rebuild.

He has a year to go on his contract but this gives currency to Swans and he is rumoured to want to come home.

Mates with Newman too - this deal will get done involving adelaide’s 1st rounder.

I'd rather use it on an A grade mid if available - you knwo who ...
but if papley is next best I wouldn't be crying..

Nice post OP - well done.

I'll throw a spanner in the works and say this:

Couldn't care less about so called specialist small forwards - it is all BS.

prefer blokes that can tackle / pressure take a mark and kick regulation goals.

T@

Why?

because in Charlie/harry and McGovern we already have three fantastic contested marks and decent kicks - the other three just have to be decent and quick enough in brain and foot to support - and we already have plenty of that type.

First priority is to replace Simpson and Thomas-both of whom are still very important players at Carlton - delivering in very important moments in games.

The whole need a small forward meme is overdone nonsense - the side already kicks 100 points in games - defense requires attention as does midfield depth.

They're already on the list. SPS and Doc.

I agree. I think Coniglio would be our no.1 target but as a FA. So I would be going for both of them, plus Tippa and S.Bolton. 3 out of 4 would be a heist, 2 out of 4 is a must and any less and we have to settle for Gray.

If your referring to Cogs, JaB, he's a FA of course, so costs us nothing except for salary space...Papley would be the icing with the Cow's 1st rounder.
Getting those two in would be massive, considering it potentially doesn't involve any future picks.

Might be more for the the unpopular opinion thread but I don't think that papley us as good as most on here seems to think. Don't get me wrong he would be handy but he is not the second coming.

To me he is a notch below your Charlie Cameron and Liam Ryan types.

Sam Gray is a notch below again but might be better value. Our real hope is that Dave Cuningham can play a full season. That pack hitting goal against the dogs was as good as you will see.

I tend to agree with this sentiment.

Didn't both his grandfather's play for the swans (albeit at south melbourne) so he has a fair bit of history there.

Mind you I never thought that Jarrod Waite would leave.

I'm thinking SOS would maybe have plan B in place in case Coningliop falls through...I would if I were him.

Totally agree....the latest view in the media is that if he doesn't sign with GWS, the likely destination is Hawks because of his relationship with O'Meara. I would cut my wrists if that happened!!!
I'm hoping that he re-signs with GWS if it falls through with the Blues, putting pressure on their cap, and we can jag a quality player that pops out like a Bonar or Caldwell...

Maybe that is SOS’ plan B. Push the price up of their guns and bring in younger talented but not fully proven guns he wanted but missed out on in their draft year...

Like gbatman said, the small forwards are added late in the rebuild. Papley is perfect age for a team like us who has laid the foundations of KPPs and mids.

Papley at 23 slots right in for us.

At Sydney he will waste his prime while they get the basics in place.

Win-win for the Adelaide 1st

Gryan Miers would be my ultimate get. That won't happen.

Papley next.

For value trades, I'd like Sam Gray or Zac Langdon.
Apart from obviously having a ridiculous name and haircut my concern about gryan is that teams look like they are starting to work him out a bit. Might come through it but if we are to invest heavily i want someone who has quite a lot of repeated runs on the board.
