Mock Draft

Each year I ask myself the question is it worth doing the mock draft. Those that do them will know they take an enormous amount of time. Frankly had enough of tinkering with it and just want to put it up.

This year I have aimed to draft according to team needs which I sourced from BF with a dedicated thread asking team fans what they wanted. I will summarise each team at the end. Ultimately i dont worry about it to much as teams typically draft for best rather than purely needs.

Observations;

Draft goes pretty deep and I will clean up when final selections are known. Some clubs have more players some have less so don’t sweat it.

Quality of tall fwds and defenders falls away pretty quickly so you find the front is loaded with the quality and latter parts of the draft have more of the developing types.

Foj1 and I have taken exactly the same players for Pies in the first two rounds.

There are some terrific 17yo’s and they feature fairly prominently. Trick is where clubs will take them. For instance do you wait until Rd 4 or 5 or if you believe they are potentially a Rd 1 in 09 do you take them in Rd 2 or 3 this year and take the gamble. Its little things like that which intrigue me about this year.

Also a note to Swan Districts. Rarely do clubs get accolades amongst the footy public for bringing kids along and hence Swan Districts should be applauded this year. They have a terrific amount of talent available for the draft.

Would love to have had Kilpin in but so would I have liked to have taken Bennell, McKenzie, L.Jones, Young, Bucovaz, McGarry, Hayes and Weadon to name a few.

# 1 Melbourne - Jack Watts (Sandy Dragons / 194 / 85)

No surprises here that Melbourne will take young Watts. Notwithstanding they could do with Big Nat for both his ruck skill as well as crowd drawing capability it is the fact Watts presents the club an opportunity to develop a tall fwd who can dominate the game for the next 10 – 12 years. He is very mobile and has terrific 1:1 capability. Certainly has the capacity to develop into a player who can play up at CHF as well so will be interesting to see how he comes along. Skills are good as well and really is the complete package.

# 2 West Coast Eagles - Nicholas Natanuii (Swan Districts / 197 / 95)

No surprise here either. Seaby read the writing on the wall and knows this kid is likely to see AFL action sooner than later. Just an incredible athlete who is very good in every facet of the game. Great leap and tap work has just kept improving – also can win the ball at ground level and in the modern game that’s just a big advantage. Obviously very athletic around the ground as is going to cause opposition rucks many headaches if he can discipline himself with a high work rate. Skills can let him down at times but not everybody can be blessed with the package Cox delivers.

# 3 Fremantle – Daniel Rich (Subiaco / 183 / 83)

The Coasters will have surely thought about him and the Dockers would have desperately hoped Big Nat would have fallen to them but alas they get a gun midfielder instead. This kid is good inside and out. I am sure most of you have seen him by now but over the last 2-3 yrs that I have seen him there is one thing that just resonates every time – natural footballer. Kid was born to play and like Palmer just has a presence on the ground. These two are going to form a really formidable midfield grouping and if Pavlich can keep himself in top shape over the next 3-4 years it will be hard to see the Dockers going deep into finals with Sandilands hitting to these two and in turn them delivering to Pav.

# 4 Port Power – Tyrone Vickery (Sandy Dragons / 200 / 86)

In the Phantom Draft this kid fell to me and I swooped on him for the Pies. Talk of Draft Camp was how well this kid had developed. Has had some injury worries this year so we haven’t always seen the best of him but the potential is enormous in this kid. Plays Ruck and KPF and is very mobile. Takes terrific contested marks and his skill levels are really high quality. The word from those that have been involved at TAC with him is that he also possesses some leadership qualities so a really good get for the Power who will see him as a great replacement for Lade.

# 5 Essendon – Michael Hurley (northern Knights / 192 / 92)

This is where it gets really difficult. This selection will set the tone for the next 10 at least. Carlton fans will be spewing that I have him here but wouldn’t get to irate as Essendon are looking very closely at mids like Yarran, Blease, Sidebottom and Ziebell here. Personally I think they need to grab a quality tall here and then go looking for mids in Rd 2 and 3 where they are still plentiful. Like Rich, Hurley has impressed over a long period of time and is a natural footy player. There are some knocks on his pace and agility but I think he makes up for it with ‘out and out’ footy smarts. Very poised, a beautiful user of the football and someone who could definitely captain a club one day.

# 6 Carlton – Jack Ziebell (Murray / 188 / 84)

Let me first say – if Hurley is available then I have no doubt he will go here. Carlton desperately need a quality FB and CHF. With Hurley gone to me there are two options. 1. Forget FB and go with quality mid or 2. Aim up for Johnston or even Lisle who can go fwd and back. Personally I think they will go option 1 and take a really high quality footballer. If this kid was a WA boy he would be in with a shot at 3 because he is every bit as good as Rich and possibly has a bit more upside insomuch as he could play a wider array of positions. Tallish mid and reminds me of Buckley – solid, loves a contest, got time, uses the pill well and just doesn’t give up. Could play immediately as just looks AFL ready. Probably the player I will watch most closely from this draft.

# 7 Brisbane – Hamish Hartlett (West Adelaide / 182 / 74)

Has probably fallen a litte by the way side in recent weeks with all the hype around Sidebottom but this kid has been really highly regarded for a long time. Again, just a wonderful ball winner and user. Has a terrific engine and will just keep running all day long. Maybe a bit light framed but will develop into a gun midfielder that will remind Voss a little of himself. Will appeal to Voss but wouldn’t be surprised if Ziebell or Sidebottom went here.

# 8 Richmond – Steele Sidebottom (Murray / 182 / 79)

One of the best individual displays by a footballer I have ever seen. His performance in the TAC final was unbelievable and whilst its only one game remember that Dale Thomas jettisoned up the list on his GF a few years ago. Sidebottom showed he can change not only a game, but a BIG GAME! Was always a chance to go top 10 but this surely pushed him in there and whilst the Tiger fans may have wanted me to grab Johnston for them I just couldn’t pass him up here for you. We’ll get a KPF later that’s just rocketing up the charts in my view. Runs all day, beaut skills, just has footy smarts and does the little things so very well.

#9 North Melbourne – Tom Swift (Claremont / 190 / 84)

This is another selection that could go either way. I got caught a couple of years ago placing to much emphasis on Joel Selwoods knee and I aint going to let that happen again. Clubs will have done their homework on this kid and whoever is convinced he is ok will take him Rd 1.

Thought long and hard about dropping Blease here but with Simpson going and Harris being on the outer to some extent I have gone with the ball winning midfielder in Swift. Class act that has had a knee reco early last year. Missed a lot of footy but is very highly regarded by the blokes that count.

Swift is a ball magnet who shot to prominence at the U16 carnival a couple of years ago. Racked up getting the pill and wins it both inside and outside. Terrific height for a mid, has great footy smarts and is a natural competitor. Does the little things well and will drive the midfield brigade and you can certainly find other types to build around him later.

# 10 Adelaide – Lewis Johnston (North Adel / 192 / 87)

Notwithstanding Tippetts development, it stands out like a sore thumb that the Crows really need to develop a KPF. Hentschel is due back from injury so that’s upside and Sellars was taken 2 years ago without any real success to date. Gill is also there but really looks more like a 3rd tall to me.

Johnston is 17yo and is a terrific competitor. Star continues to shine post draft camp and I think he will be one in the mix very early. Loves the contest of playing KPF and puts himself into the contest at all times. Bit lightly framed but he is only 17 and has a happy knack of actually marking more than his fair share. Seems to read the ball well which is a real advantage when playing CHF / FF. Also finishes off his shots well and will bring other players into the game. Combine all this with the fact the kid has a big engine and he is a potential star. If the Crows could get Johnston, Sellars, Tippett and Hentschel all firing they have a fabulous squad ready to go deep into finals in a couple of years time.

Did think about a mid here but I am just not sure there is a quality key forward that will be around by the next pick. Lisle and McKernan would be other options here.

# 11 Collingwood – Sam Blease (Eastern / 183 / 72)

Pies have delisted a heap of mids or have had them retire so feel this is going to be a midfield type.

Pies take Blease here and get arguably the kid with the most upside in the draft. Wonderful mover and is just a pleasure to watch. Can do some amazing things on the footy field. Pies will look to him as a developing mid who can win his own ball and play outside as well. Got a reasonably good engine but he needs to develop some miles in those legs. Beaut user of the ball and is someone who Mick will like as he loves a chase and will look to tackle. The knock on him is whether his fitness will get him to a point that he can rack up the 25 possessions each game.

If Swift is gone then maybe someone like Robinson could go here. Lisle is also in their sights so don’t be surprised if he is the one selected.

# 12 Sydney – Shaun McKernan (Calder / 196 / 95)

Little like the Crows but worse. These blokes desperately need to redevelop the spine – particularly fwd. Hall hasn’t got a heap of time left and Micky O aint far away either. These are the two tall options at the moment of any note and need to be succession planned.

McKernan stands 195cm and will probably play more fwd than back. Can go into the ruck for short stints. Moves very well and loves to compete. Looks like Corey on the field but just not as tall. Skills are good and loves to use his physicality as well.

Thought about Lisle here as he can play fwd and back as well, thought less about Trengrove who is more CHB which I think is the area of less concern to them than a KPF.

# 13 – Jackson Trengrove (Calder / 196cm / 81kgs)

Saints need KPD and would love Hurley to fall here, and he is a chance if his lack of agility gets to heavily weighted, but they will be rapt with Trengrove. In a couple of years time if they can have Fischer, Trengrove, Kosi, and Riewoldt filling the spine they will be a daunting prospect.

A ruck at junior level he is a bit short to play ruck albeit he has a terrific leap. Also played defence and ultimately I think it will be here that he will make his name. Injured this year but he has built up enough credit points to be a first round selection. Very versatile player with good agility and neat skills. Reads the play well and will be a terrific get for Saints.

# 14 Western Bulldogs – Ayce Cordy (Geelong Falcons / 202 / 78)

Father / Son selection and is going to be a super ruck in years to come for the Scrays. Saints valued highly as they bid their first round for him and the Dogs were happy to close that door on them. Behind Nat he is the best ruck in this draft.

# 15 Geelong – Aaron Cornelius (TAS / 192cm / 83kgs)

Cats have everything so go with best available. Been watching this kid for three years and has built an impressive CV for the recruiters. Elite fwd who has the ability to really turn it on. Very agile and gets to the footy really well. Also loves the contested mark and very happy to hit the packs. At 192cm you would like him a little taller and hence he may develop into a 3rd tall more than a FF or CHF. Finishes his work off pretty well. Has played a lot of VFL footy so will be ready to go sooner than later. Another club who could be tempted by Lisle as CHF prospects are thin for them with young Nathan flying the coup.

# 16 Hawthorn – Chris Yarran (Swan Districts / 180 / 84)

Was again going to go with Lisle here but when I asked Hawk fans about their needs I kept on getting back – “best available”.

Yarran is the best left at this point. Been watching him for a while now and is just a beautiful reader of the game. Seems so effortless and gets into position easily (I think of Darren Jarman when I see him). Gets a ton of the ball and typically uses it well. Plays fwd but can play either end or potentially wing would be a great spot for him if he could get fit enough to do it. Can win his own ball but his real class is his time and use of the ball on his left side. Another to have seen a heap of senior footy and will potentially walk into the Hawk side in 09……..he is that good!

#17 Melbourne – Nick Suban (North Ballarant / 179 / 82)

An AIS lad who was an AA member last year – quality footballer player. Junior career was more as a defender type but has worked into the midfield to be an elite midfielder. Gets big possession numbers which is great because he does win a lot of him own but his real quality is in his kicking. One of the most efficient kicks going around and forwards playing in front of him will be well served. Is versatile enough to go back and maybe in a midfield group like Melbournes may be more likely to start there.

# 18 West Coast Eagles – Stephen Hill (West Perth / 182 / 72)

I wrote earlier that I thought Blease could have the most upside – Hill would be hot on his tail. Often wonder whether this kid could end being in the top 3 or so from this draft. A wiry framed kid who plays more outside than in but if he fills out properly will be one of the hardest matchups in AFL footy. That combination of speed, endurance and a bit of strength will be sensational to watch. Lot like Brennan in his cat like movement but doesn’t have the leap of Brennan IMO. Has more speed though and a bigger engine. Typically plays on a wing and has explosive pace. Skills are very good when on but can butcher it under pressure at times. Could go a lot higher!

# 19 Melbourne – Jordan Lisle (Oakleigh / 196 / 87)

Melbourne get lucky here and have Lisle fall to them. Be surprised if he gets this far as he is being closely watched. Plays the CHF post very well and then showed us at champs that he can play equally well up back. He reminds me of guys like Christian and Morwood because he just has a lot of poise and seems to make the right decisions whenever he has it. Moves well and skills are fantastic for a big boy and finishes off his work well. Word has it that he is a super nice kid and will develop into a leader. I think his career will start back not fwd but am probably alone in thinking that. The good news for you Dee fans is he could do either.

# 20 West Coast Eagles – Michael Walters (Swan Districts / 177 / 75)

Eagles fans were telling me that there is a need for a high quality nippy fwd in the Rioli mould. Whilst Walters has spent a lot of time at junior footy in the middle and will develop into there he presents more as a small fwd type in his early AFL years. Walters is a former AIS boy and is being keenly sought by a number of clubs. Don’t be surprised if he ends up going late in the first round to the Swans. Gets to a lot of contests and racks up a fair bit of the footy. Skills are sublime and gives his fwds really good service. Very exciting prospect.

# 21 Fremantle – Mitch Robinson (TAS / 188 / 77)

One of my favourite players! A tall midfield type that is equally good inside as he is outside. Gets to a lot of contests and really presents as a clearance specialist. When playing outside can be a good link up player as his skills are very good along with his decision making capability. Can really influence games and have watched him change games because of his ball winning ability. Uses the ball very well and is an on field leader. Can also move into a HF or HB role so will offer a lot of versatility to the club that picks him up. Could go as early as pick 10 IMO as he just loves playing footy. Another that reminds me of Buckley.

# 22 Port Power – Clancee Pearce (Swan Districts / 183 / 85)

Solid HB flanker type who just mops up getting the footy across the HB line. A lot like Myers in many ways and has a magnificent left foot. Frankly the kid could fall a bit lower than this because he doesn’t have a lot of pace which will worry clubs but his wonderful decision making and use of the ball will ensure he goes highly. Quality HBF are really important in this game as they set up a lot of plays and Pearce could walk into senior footy and play this role today. Had a great champs and was consistently a top WAFL performer with Swans.

# 23 Essendon – Nick Heyne (Gippy / 187 / 79)

Super footballer who spends most of his time in the midfield but can go fwd and kick goals. Gets a heap of possessions and use the ball really well. Not overly quick but that’s probably the only thing he is missing. Makes it up in ability to read play and be where the ball is going to be.

# 24 Fremantle – Ryan Schoenmakers (Norwood / 190 / 88)

Another one of my favourites who I will follow with great anticipation over the next few years. Just a sublime mover on a football field who presents as someone who will develop enormously under the right coaching programme. If the body continues to fill out he will develop into a Scott Lucas type. Beaut mover on a footy field and has a raking left foot. On the big ground of Subi this bloke will be terrific as he gets more 1:1 contests than he would on a smaller ground. Reads the play really well and will be someone that the Dockers can assume will have a big career. Could go first round …..just a real talent.

# 25 Brisbane – Neville Jetta (Swan Districts / 178 /75)

Think of a superlative and it probably applies to Jetta. A small fwd who has also played a lot further up the field at junior footy. He is very quick and keeps his feet really well when in trouble. Has the time to extract himself and either find space or put other blokes in it. Seems to enjoy the physicality and brings a level of attitude to his game which if harnessed properly will turn him into a terrific get for the Lions. Just a class footy player.

# 26 Richmond - Mitch Brown ( Sandringham / 191 / 82)

A product of the Sandringham Dragons who has reportedly bolted into 2nd and possibly even first round contention. Might be a bit much but shapes as a very nice selection for the Tigers. Played more school footy this year but when he came onto the scene he had everybody talking. Works very hard on the field and gets to a lot of contests where he will be 1:1. Obviously it means he takes a lot of marks. The difference though is that he wins a lot of contested marks as well and so if he develops at the pace he has to date will be someone who you can push closer to the goals with devasting impact. Nice skills and a very exciting prospect.

Question for Tiger recruiters is do you let Sidebottom pass to get Johnston and then take a lesser midfielder here. Not for me but its 50:50.

# 27 North Melbourne - David Zaharkis (Northern Knights / 180 / 73)

Would love for him to fallen to Pies but having taken Swift the Roos go for another mid. Was surprised this kid wasn’t taken last year and frankly I think a few of them will be wondering if they should have used their last round selection on him at the very least in last years draft.

Tough and quick midfielder who loves a contest and is super competitive. Gets to a lot of contests and has a penetrating kick. Attacking type and will look to finish his work with a goal if the opportunity persists. One of the things I always like about him is that he rarely has a bad game

# 28 Adelaide - Jarrad Blight (Swan Districts / 192 / 82)

Attacking midfield type from the footy factory known as Swan Districts. Tallish type who is quick and will take the game on and try and break lines. Also a very good mark and uses the ball well. Has a lot of upside and with his height and athletic cred will be one to watch. Think he might start on a wing or even HBF at AFL level but wont be far away depending on the side he goes to. AAMI suits him nicely.

# 29 Collingwood – Ash Smith (Dandenong / 184 /85)

Having gone for Blease in the first its more the inside midfield type required here. Ash Smith is another that’s gotten a lot of attention lately and like Ward did last year could bolt into the early stages of Rd 2. Wins his own footy and whilst a bit one paced he finds space really easily. Penetrating kick and tends to hit up his targets with ease. Has that happy knack of also being able to drop a kick into a small space as well. Thought about a key defender here but there really isn’t one that stands out to be selected here.

# 30 Sydney – Jamie Sheahan (Murray / 178 / 73)

Will surprise a few I have him this high but he fits what the Swans needs – quick midfielders. Can play wing or fwd and is a magnificent competitor who seems to just love playing the game. Good endurance and knocks up getting the ball and is really neat user by both hand and feet. Whilst only 178cm he is a fantastic 1:1 mark and will win his share of the ball in a contested situation. Has got some filling out to do but will be a regular I would have thought from 2010 onwards. I see him as a McVeigh type but with more x factor potentially.

# 31 Western Bulldogs – Rhys OKeefe (North Adelaide / 187 / 80)

One of the few SA boys that really impressed. Tough and hard running HBF type that uses the ball really well. Loves a physical contest. Wins his own share of the ball and combined with his foot skills will set play up well. Just love those types that can win 1:1 ball at the HB line and turn it over and send it back when the opposition are still running fwd. One to watch.

# 32 Western Bulldogs – Tom Lynch (Sandringham / 191 / 84)

If only he were a little taller. Standing 191cm Tom Lynch is someone who could almost play a KP. Notwithstanding he is a very strong type and he will compete all day. Stands his feet and physically just to dominant at junior level. Making that step up is going to be a challenge. Wonderful mark, wins his own contested football and very efficient with his disposals. The beauty of Tom is that he could play a number of different roles with great impact.

# 33 Geelong – Matthew Broadbent (WWT / 189 / 81)

Midfielder who is equally adept as an inside and outside player. Played last years champs and was ok but has really developed this year having grown and filled out. Loves the ball being on the ground and is very good at clearing the ball to advantage. Kicks well on either side and uses the ball very well. Runs hard and will probably start his AFL career as a HBF.

# 34 Hawthorn – Dan Hanneberry (Oakleigh / 182 / 75)

Another midfield type and one who has come into contention for a 2nd round selection as the year has gone on. Whenever I see this kid I think – poise. Just a clever footballer who moves well on the park, has reasonable speed and very good skills. But it really is his decision making that sets him apart. Will be a great add to the hawks midfield.

# 35 Melbourne - Tom Rockliff (Murray Bushrangers / 183 / 83)

Rat cunning and highly competitive medium sized fwd who is a real competitor and terrific at winning contested ball. Has a very high work rate, can take contested grabs and will generally finish his work pretty well. True he has played midfield at times at TAC level but the knock on him is that he is a bit one dimensional for AFL level as he probably cannot play any other role than as a third tall. Still the Dees will see him as a fine replacement for Robo.

# 36 West Coast Eagles – Jay Shannon (Port / 182 / 80)

Only seen a little bit of him but he is your tradition in-and-under midfielder who can also play as a small defender and in fact will probably start there. Another who can win his own footy, is very proficient around the stoppages. Skills good and wonderful tackler. You just worry when you do a mock that there are a few of this kid and hence wonder if he may not even go at all.

# 37 Fremantle – Chris Hall (WWT / 179 / 65)

Very very lively small forward type who could ultimately go into the midfield when that jockey frame of his fills out. Good acceleration and is particularly clever around the stoppages. Good runner who explodes away from stoppage and uses the ball well by hand and foot. Loves a goal and whilst you think of a Milne when you see him there is no doubt there is more upside to this kid.

# 38 Port Power – James Strauss (Oakleigh / 185 / 81)

I fear after writing this Port fans will wish I had him going a little later and not necessarily to them. Have seen a bit of this kid and didn’t originally have in my top 50 as I am not sure what Strauss has that stands him out. He is a good solid HB / Midfield type that has been good without being really outstanding. Still he presents as someone who has much development in him and have seen him play well at TAC level. Hard runner who carries the ball well and delivers well into fwd 50. Suspect at AFL level he will be a HBF who will link the ball carry and deliver well into the midfield / F50. Competes well and will apply tackle pressure as well. Again I just find myself musing why I have him here. Just a very solid footballer who aint going to ever let you down.

# 39 Geelong – Matthew De Boer (Claremont / 183 / 77)

Collingwood apparently pleaded with this kid to nominate last year but for school reasons he chose not. Very competitive footballer who was a standout in 07 and as a bottom ager was likely to have gone around 25 if he had been there. Probably hasn’t come on as well this year but still played for WA and was a good performer. Runs hard from HB and the midfield and usually uses it ok – although this year I have heard much more negative feedback about his skills. I can only go on what I have seen over a couple of years is good without being outstanding. Good at the clearances and tends to set up play pretty well. Ferocious tackler and wouldn’t be surprised if the Pies were still keen.

# 40 Carlton – Paul Cahill (Sturt / 192 / 80)

Talented footballer who has caught the eye of the AIS development folks and was reportedly close to being taken in 07. Can play FF or CHF but could even be developed as a CHB type. Has a big leap on him and is pretty exciting to watch as he is pretty agile. Loves the contest and can take contested grabs but just wonder if he wont be better suited down back. The knock is he doesn’t get a heap of the footy and therefore I just wonder if they aint better trying him back where he can use his leap as an efficient tall defender. The versatility and potential upside is pretty big.

# 41 Brisbane – Luke Shuehy (Oakleigh / 185 / 84)

Hard running and competitive midfielder who played for metro at the champs. Was solid without being outstanding but it was his form at TAC which excites. Has had a good solid year and tends to get pretty decent possessions. Will win own footy and has the ability to go fwd and kick goals. Would have thought Voss will like some of those skills.

# 42 Port Power – Michael Still (Northern Knights / 194 / 83)

Potentially a bold choice by the Power that will pay off handsomely. Like Brown it’s a little difficult to try and predict where he may go. One of those kids who with another good TAC year could be a first rounder next year. Power have a terrific young list and a couple of good talls to go with Westhoff will round the squad out well. Still is a bottom age kid whose still growing and who plays key fwd. Very good engine and tends to get to a lot of contests. Very good mark and an average to ok kick.

# 43 North Melbourne - Mitch Banner (Western Jets / 178 / 77)

Every year I pick a footballer that I just love. Usually they are a contested footy winner who gets a fair bit of it and uses it well (Adams / Batsanis / Hurley / Kelly) are past winners of my adulation). This year it is Banner. Unfortunately these types usually fall much lower than I have them – if they get selected at all! So with Banner I have deliberately dropped him 20 spots from where I would otherwise have him. Massive possession – had over 40 touches in one game which is very rare at TAC level. Terrific at the clearances and uses the ball very well. Won Western jets B&F last year. Can play.

# 44 Adelaide – Jack Redden (WWT / 202 / 88)

As many are at his age a bean pole ruckmen who promises much at this time. Played Champs as the #1 ruck for SA and presents as a competitive kid who is willing to get down on his knees to get a clearance. Solid in every aspect of the game required of a ruckmen such as tap work, agaility, skills etc but its his second efforts that put him ahead of others.

# 45 Collingwood – Sam Wright (Murray Bushrangers / 188 / 76)

This is the point where I get a bit circumspect as to whether or not these players will get taken. Sam Wright is an example of this. Very versatile footballer who can play a variety of positions. To me he is best suited to a wing and HF. Reads the game very well and has reasonably good pace. Tends to make good decisions and is very good by hand and foot. The x factor with this kid though is that he is one touch. Have seen him a few times and I just cannot get over how little he fumbles below his knees. You just cannot teach that so would think the recruiters have him well and truly in their sight.

# 46 Collingwood - Jordan Roughead (North Ballarat / 199 / 87)

Pies have taken three midfield types by here and its probably time to look at Ruck and KPD posts. Roughead is a big ruck type who has a fairly solid frame and is very strong at the ruck contest. Debated whether to take Browne before Roughead but went with Roughead because he probably offers more in the contested mark situation and a bit more agile around the ground. Can go fwd as well.

# 47 St Kilda – Kade Klemke (Murray & NSW / 180 / 78)

Saints 2nd pick and was probably looking for a speedier type but with the trading for Ray then I think a solid HB type is the go. Gram and Goddard both show the potential to play a lot more midfield in 09 and Klemke is someone that could quite easily fill that HB role. Terrific player who is just a real competitor. Keeps his feet in the contest and will just not give up. Makes good decisions with the ball and skills are ok.

# 48 St Kilda - Tom Hill ( Northern Knights / 198 / 80)

Havent seen a heap of this kid as he has had injuries and is bottom aged as well. For those that have not seen think of Tony Notte last year and you get some sense of it. He is still very raw but has shown enough to suggest he is worth taking a punt on before he potentially turns into a super star by next year. Very agile and will be groomed for a key forward post. Very agile and contests very well. Skills ok but to be fair I have only seen him when its been a bit windy and hence its hard to benchmark him.

# 49 Geelong – Ranga Erickwarama (NSW / 178 / 79)

Scholarship player for Cats. Disappointed Pies didn’t get him but whoever got to him from Geelong deserves a bonus. Big call but this kid would go 15-30 if in the real draft and is a real prospect of getting into their side sooner than later. Does pretty much everything on the footy field. Plays midfield, inside and out, can go fwd, uses the ball superbly, terrific at the stoppages where he can set up play. Just a really smart footy player. Thought that he may be offered rookie but have also heard that he has knocked it back so he may come into the real draft proper if Cattery doesnt offer him a senior spot. He certainly deserves it. Ultimately the Cats may not use this selection either way.

# 50 Hawthorn - Tom Allwright (Tas / 185 / 83)

Medium sized midfield / defender who had a really good champs. Gets quite a bit of the footy and is another who can play inside and out when required. Gets a fair bit of the ball and uses it well.

# 51 Melbourne – Dayne Beams (Southport / 181 / 80)

Imposing looking kid and another off the production line out of Southport. Beams is a very competitive midfielder type who played in this premiership team at Southport. Skilled player who gets fair bit of the football and runs all day. Aggressive player who likes a contest and has a pretty big engine. Consistency and height (which he cant do much about) would be the only issues for him.

# 52 West Coast Eagles - Hayden Ballantyne (Peel Thunder / 175 / 73)

Have not seen a lot of this guy but is small fwd from Peel Thunder who won this years Sandover medal. Caused a bit of a stir when he didn’t turn up to state screening. Small fwd who kicks a heap of goals and reads the ball well off the pack.

# 53 Fremantle – Steve Geartner (Dandenong / 198 / 86)

Went hard on this kid getting up last year and he missed out. I think the big issue was his kicking because outside of that he is very promising type. This year his skills have improved markedly. Year was ok for him and he mainly played across HB line as well as up on the wing. Had a super finals series and clubs will see his agility at 198cm as extremely attractive. Can have stints in the ruck and go fwd but I think he will settle at CHB in league footy. Might be a good match up for Buddy one day. A recruiter could make a name for himself on this kid and the wide open space of Subi looms attractive.

# 54 Port Power – Luke Rounds (Geelong Falcons / 181 / 70)

Geelong Falcons youngster who will be one of the bottom agers closely looked at this year when otherwise may have had another year to develop. Conceivable that he might also be left at TAC level for another year as well. Pacy and works hard around the ground. Seems to have a lot of footy nous and potentially suitable for a few different positions.

# 55 Essendon – John McDonald (Sturt / 180 / 78)

This is a very speculative pick and one Sheedy would definitely be up for in the good old days. This kid is a bit of a larrikin from all reports and I think was one of the SA boys who got cut from the sa squad for last years champs. Pacy type who has a heap of x factor about him. Typically plays on a flank or fwd pocket and is very exciting around goals. Particularly good at reading the ball from contested situations in the highlights I have seen but best to defer to one of the SA boys for more. If he gets the right coaching programme he would be a wonderful addition from such a late pick.

# 56 Fremantle – Charlie Sharples (Sturt / NT / 180 / 74)

Was a terrific performer at Champs and has played well at SANFL level as well. Creative and talented small fwds who do the little things are very much sought after in the modern world and Sharples is one sure to be looked at. Pacy and has competed well and consistently all year. Exciting prospect for the Dockers with Farmer gone. His form line suggests we might see a bit of him next year.

# 57 Brisbane – Riley Milne (Murray Bushrangers / 192 / 78)

Speculative pick for the Lions here again but Milne has shown terrific progress from 07 to 08. Tall and athletic key defensive position type who competed well all year for the Bushies and impressed at Champ time as well. Attacks the footy hard despite being pretty skinny. Brings the ball to ground and then follows his work up by getting a few touches as well. Skill level would be in the upper range for a tall.

# 58 Richmond – Andrew Renton ( Eastern Ranges / 202 / 94)

Was a bit surprised he didn’t get taken last year so will be surprised if he doesn’t get picked up this year. One of the better ruck prospects in this year draft. Good with the palm at the contest he also gets around the ground pretty well and picks up his fair share of the ball. Skills are ok.

# 59 North Melbourne – Jordan Jones (Geelong Falcons / 190 / 90)

Taken mids pretty well up to this point for North and its time to go for something taller. Saw a bit of him this year and presents as a third defensive tall type. Just seems to have a fait bit of time. Very agile and reads the play well. When in possession will share it around and is a v good user of the football and certainly going to get selected.

# 60 Adelaide – Steven Motlop (NT / 181 / 73)

This kid has an enormous amount of potential. Bottom ager who went into the AIS programme as a 16 yo and won plenty of plaudits. Smart, skilful footballer as you would expect given his pedigree but also very light. The emergence of Nath Krakouer earlier than expected gives hope and could be a real get for the Crows if they are prepared to wait for him. Could go a lot earlier and was tempted to drop him in around 30. Could play midfield but given size will develop as a fwd first.

# 61 Sydney - Liam Anthony (East Fremantle / 183 / 80)

The Swans are committed to keeping themselves in the top 8 and will be likely to take one of the better mature age players on offer around here. The best for mine is Liam Anthony from the WAFL. Had a super year where he really came on in leaps and bounds. Hard running midfield who has genuine pace and who ticks all the boxes. Finishes his work off well and likes to run fwd for a goal as well.

# 62 Sydney – Matt Suckling (Sandringham / 183 / 84)

Good to see this kid taken as I think many of us had wraps on him before he got himself injured last year. Was kept on as an overage player and has been a consistently good performer for them this year. Ticks all the boxes – strong at the contest, good in close, can play outside and finishes off his possessions very well. Type that would appeal to Swans as he just keeps going and wont let you down.

# 63 St Kilda – Zach Sengstock (Sandringham / 191 / 85)

Over age defender who has the potential to develop very well. Enormous amounts of ticker and backs himself when the ball is in his hands. Uses it very well and presents as a tall defender the Saints can work with. The only issue with this selection is the kid is Sam Gilbert like and hence a Jayden Post might be more appealing here.

# 64 Western Bulldogs - Will Young (/ 192 / 83)

Not entirely the Country representative will get selected but I sure hope he does. Very competitive kid who attacks the ball with real intensity. Looks best suited to a CHB position but is a way from having the frame to do that. Like Williams he is very athletic and covers the ground pretty well. With Williams and Wight, Young will be given time to develop down at Willy.

# 65 Hawthorn – John Rayner (Western Jets / 184 / 66)

Cant say I know a lot about this kid as have only seen him play once but he was very good. Stats from his few games will tell you he was pretty influential in the games he played. He is a bottom age midfielder who is very light but seems to tick all the boxes. Whilst a speculative pick its one the Hawks can afford and he is exactly the type that will start getting taken around this point in the draft. Where a Zaharkis wasn’t taken last year, this year that same type will be.

# 66 Geelong – PASS

#67 Melbourne – Adam Cockie (Subiaco / 185 / 83)

Kid that has been much talked about on BF over last few years and was a surprise that he didn’t go last year. Thought about having him much higher in the draft but unlikely a 19yo would go any higher than 3rd I would have thought. Tough player who would be almost ready to walk into league footy. Spent a year playing WAFL where he honed his trade coming off a HB / Mid type role. No real x factor about him just a very good solid footballer who finishes his work very well. Very committed and will every post a winner. Could well be a bargain.

# 68 West Coast Egales – Taylor Duryea (NSW / Murray / 179 / 80)

Might be a bit biased but I get to see a bit of this lad and I think he is very impressive. Put in some really solid performance for NSW and was a good contributor for the TAC premiers as well. Very poised kid who is hard it and wins enough contested possessions to be classed as an in/out mid. Provides run as well and uses the ball very proficiently from the left side. Typically best suited to a wing / HB flank role.

# 69 Carlton – Ian Richardson (Claremont / 175 / 76)

When I asked Carlton fans what their needs were – a quality small fwd came up. Few to choose from here and frankly a bit of a lottery but expect the WA names of Richardson, Bennell, Dennis-Lane etc to all be in the mix. Richardson is a class act and at 21 probably provides a more immediate option for the Blues. Solid kid who won Claremonts B&F and kicked 60 odd goals which was a terrific effort for a young bloke playing HF/FP. Reads the ball off the pack well but not unhappy to provide an option to goal himself. Will prefer space so getting a few games on the G will be perfect for the little man. Could have an immediate impact.

# 70 Port Power – Todd Banfield ( Swan Districts / 181 / 78)

Thought about Ben Bucovaz here but Todd Banfield probably offers more upside. Lightning quick kid that has a terrific engine and will run all day. Skills very good and in the few tapes I have seen seems to have a red hot go. Will be well suited to AAMI where he can really use his pace to advantage. Power fans will certainly notice him – he’s a bloodnut and I don’t think you have ever had a quality bloodnut have you?

#71 Essendon – Rory Sloane (Eastern Ranges / 182 / 76)

Notwithstanding he is the winner of this years TAC Coaches award and he had a pretty good camp he is a bit of a speculative pick. I say that because I don’t see anything that particularly stands out for me. Plays midfield in the main and is probably best suited to a defensive role where he played during the champs. Quite likes the physical contest and does his best work finding an option thru heavy traffic. What will let him down is use of the ball by foot which is probably below par. Might be getting a bloke that ultimately goes a bit higher here.

# 72 Fremantle - Will Martinello (Murray / 175 / 75)

Really hope this kid gets picked up. No real x factor and height is against him but a solid footballer who is more a utility than anything else. Probably more likely to play back at AFL level where he can use his defensive skills but also provide some run and carry. Attacking nature where he will try and run off his opponent as he did to Rich in the champs when he put in a great display.

# 73 Brisbane - Ben Speight (Norwood / 177 / 77)

Beaut little footballer but wonder whether he is big enough for clubs these days as they aim to get taller, running mids who can play a variety of roles. Played most of his footy fwd where his reading of the play is used to advantage but suspect he may end up starting back. Likes a contest, good in close and quite pacy so would suit as an aggressive BP type.

# 74 Richmond – Taylor Hunt (Sandringham / 183 / 80)

Comes from an athletics background and is someone that has not played a lot of footy. Suspect he may go a little earlier than here as clubs may see a fair bit of upside. Plays a variety of roles but will probably be used in a role that allows him to run and receive. Was a solid contributor all year and has a terrific work rate. The knock is going to be his foot skills. The attraction is that the upside is probably pretty large.

# 75 North Melbourne - Brad Mangan (Murray Bushrangers / 185cm / 80kgs)

This kid has a lot of upside and could potentially play midfield in3-4 years time. Played as a bottom ager (and will be potentially one of the youngest taken) in the Bushies side which went on to win the TAC GF. Was used in a variety of roles around the fwd half and sometimes even at CHF. When you watch him he never appears to be in a hurry and you often wonder if he is laconic but I think its more like a kid who just knows where he wants to be or run to. Acquitted himself very well and has made a name for himself as a very good 1:1 player who can win his own ball and take contested grabs. Skills are good on both sides and really presents as someone with terrific upside just think for him to have been that influential this year in that team he is well worth picking up now.

# 76 Adelaide – Scott Blessing (West Adelaide / 184 / 80)

Player I have only seen a couple of times and possibly played better than what he is known for. Loved his run off the HB flank and tended to make good decisions and finish off his work pretty well. Have him going at the Crows as suspect he might be one they think can develop with their game style.

# 77 Collingwood - Jayden Post (Western Jets / 195 / 86)

Could well be accused here for tanking this kid down to Pies pick as he probably belongs in the 55-70 range. However he is over age and is a player that has possibly been over hyped – in horse racing parlance the mug punter has got a hold of him and backed him into favoritism in a year where the quality of talls thins out pretty quickly. But stuff it - its my draft and the Pies will be rapt if he comes to Lexus. Dominated CHB this year and took the most marks in the comp. Terrific contested mark and loves hitting the packs with aggression. Also good at ground level and uses the ball very well for a big fella. If he was 18 I wonder if he would go a fair bit earlier?

# 78 Sydney – Alex Stopp (Norwood / 191 / 85)

Running tall defender who I think has gone largely unnoticed on this forum. 1-2cm short most likely but I have seen him a few times now and I think he has a high degree of potential. I understand he has played pretty well in SANFL ressies with Norwood this year. Granted there is not a lot x factor but you don’t need your tall backs to have a lot of tricks. He is athletic, good spring on him which allows him to play a tad taller, can work with the ball when its below his knees and is reasonably clean with disposal. Probably more a third tall but he is reasonably solid and if he fills outs more which is inevitable and can steal an inch then he could be an effective HB / CHB / FB type that could rotate.

# 79 St Kilda – Luke Stanton (Northern Knights / 191 / 83)

Originally had Seamus Young landing here but with Ray and potentially Cousins the Saints are stacked for experienced mids. Stanton then becomes a great choice and probably should go higher. Tall athletic kid who typically plays wing but could also run off HB. Moves well, strong over the ball and uses the ball pretty well. His athleticism suggests he could go higher than this and is one who might be able to play sooner than later. There is a question on his kicking but he is fairly handly on both sides.

# 80 Western Bulldogs - Phil Davis (North Adelaide / 193 / 83)

Not someone I have seen a heap of and hence why he is a bit further back than others might have him. Seen a couple of tapes though and is a very athletic tall who is more likely to be used in a CHB position. Frame is still light but the height, mobility, reading the play and skills are all something to work with.

# 81 Hawthorn – Jake Walsh (Northern Knights / 196 / 96)

Highly speculative choice (probably the most in this draft). Have only seen him once but I liked what I saw. Massive kid who is still bottom age and really could develop into anything. From what I understand he was tried in a range of KP posts and showed potential in all. Probably akin to Thoolen last year from the Pioneeers who was taken by Collingwood. Marks well, skills are pretty good and covers the ground quite very well for a big boy. Doesn’t lack for courage and if he was left in the system for next year he could develop into something special so with time and the opportunity to be a bit speculative I have him down as perfect for the Hawks.

# 82 Geelong – PASS

# 83 Melbourne – Xavier McMahon (NSW / 188 / 85)

Tallish utility type who played in the middle and across HB. Solid kid who holds his feet well and I think would have probably finished in the top possession getters at champs for NSW. Can win his own ball or link up play. His performances at champs would certainly have had him in the scouts minds.

# 84 West Coast Eagles – PASS

# 85 Fremantle – Zachary Clarke (Oakleigh Chargers / 203 / 84)

Very much a project player but has got a lot of the right attributes for a club to look at this late. His biggest advantages are that he has a big leap and that he is reasonably mobile for his size. If he can learn the art of rucking and improve his hit outs to advantage then he will become a potentially damaging player. Marking is ok but could improve but you sense the ‘want’ is there so could come on quite well.

# 86 Port Power – Rhyce Stanley (West Adelaide / 199 / 84)

Another project ruckmen who is very speculative. Was the 2nd string ruck to Redden at champs but did show some signs. Has a terrific leap on him and seems to get himself into good positions on the ground. Doesn’t win enough of the ball or provide a link and that’s the area I think he probably needs to improve. Tap work seemed ok but haven’t seen a heap so defer to others.

# 87 Essendon - Bart McCulloch (Tasmania / 198 / 83)

This kid really intrigued me in the games I watched him play. Tall lad who is lightly framed but seems terrificlly athletic. Played all over the ground but mainly FF and Ruck in the games I saw and was very solid. Would strike me as a player that a club would think they could mould into someone who could play a variety of roles and that would make him attractive. Has very good pace for a kid his size and skills are above average as well. Could be a bolter in the 3rd or 4th rounds to be honest.

# 88 Carlton - Tom Gillies (Dandenong / 192 / 85)

Developing young tall from Dandenong who offers much potential. Writing this one on the run but think he is bottom age. Takes a nice contested mark and skills aren’t going to require any work either. Looms as a nice bloke to have developing for a pretty cheap pick.

# 89 Brisbane – Joel Smouha (Mt Gravatt / 197 / 88)

Very highly rated kid from QLD that was a part of the AFLQ Rookie Search programme. Played last year and caught the eye then but seems to have progressed well this year and appeals because of his athletic credentials. Can play a variety of roles but notwithstanding he has been more ruck for QLD, I suspect he will settle to CHB. In saying that I didn’t think Renouf would cut it as a ruck so what do I know!

# 90 Richmond – Tom German (Calder / 184 / 84)

I was going to take Kilpin here but I just cannot pass up taking Tom German. Just amazed how this guy has fallen out of some people estimations. Last year was a premier performer and one we all were pretty excited about for this year. Been cruelled by off field injuries. Super competitive midfielder who would play a Sewell, Swan, Mitchell type role. Extracts the ball, hard to beat one on one, consistent use of it and a kid that just wont let you down. He probably aint going to win you a B&F but at this pick getting them to play 100 AFL games would be the aim. German will do that if given the chance.

# 91 North Melbourne – Andrew Hunter (Dandenong / 193 / 83)

Very much a project player at this selection but potentially a handy one. Hunter has probably played more fwd than back. Ultimately I think he is more suited back than fwd and it’s a position where he can use his leap and athleticism to best use. Reasonably hard it player and you always like that with a KP defender typ.

# 92 Adelaide - Liam Shiels (eastern Ranges / 183 / 78)

Another solid type who is probably touch and go to get drafted. Is bottom aged I think and hence you aint looking for perfection but rather something to work with. Was a terrific player at U16 level but wasn’t as dominant this year. Expect a club to take him as he is has good footy nous and looks composed when on the park. Moves well and runs to the right positions on the ground. Skills are very good and attacks the footy pretty hard as well.

# 93 Brisbane Lions – PASS

# 94 Sydney – Aaron Purves (Dandenong / 187 / 80)

Classy forward from the Dandenong Stingrays who kicked 40 odd goals for the year and seems to always be in the game. You wonder how committed the kid is and how much of it he is doing on just ability but I suspect he is just one of those players that looks laconic. He actually reminds me of Micky O so ironic he ends up here. Kind of a funny kicking action but one you definitely would keep your eye on.

#95 St Kilda – Lance Daly (Swan Districts / 191 / 85)

I am always worry about fwds that are 191cm since I got so keen on the young WA fwd whose name escapes me from a couple of years ago (luke shuehy?). Still he is very talented and has a good engine and knows where the big sticks are. At this late stage you taken the punt – particularly when you need more fwd options!

# 96 Western Bulldogs – PASS

# 97 Hawthorn – Caleb Tiller (Murray Bushrangers / 187 / 77)

This kid has really grown on me and I probably should have him higher. Solid all year and in many ways his GF was typical of his year. He just seems to accumulate possessions and whenever he gets it he always tends to do the right thing. Just seems a very smart footballer who will go get it, can play well 1:1 and finishes off his work nicely. In fact he could embarrass me and end up in a 3rd or 4th round.

Club by club

Adelaide

Strategy going in was to look for a KPF, Ruck and small fwd. With Johnston and Redden taking care of the first two needs there was plenty of talent left in Shiels, Blight and Blessing and a little bit of x factor in Motlop.

Brisbane

Strategy was to seek out mids that were hard running and then try and snag a couple of KP players late.

Whenever I have done a mock these blokes are never happy – but when you only need mids then getting Harlett and Jetta in the first two rounds would appeal. Some handy kids later on. Smouha could be an exceptional talent for such a late pick.

Carlton

Was told to really take best available but wanted another mid, couple of flexible KP players and a small fwd.

Having traded for Warnock the Blues were effectively a pick down and got shuffled back a bit. Missing on Hurley would be hard but Ziebell and Richardson could almost walk into the side whilst Cahill and Gillies offer development in key posts.

Collingwood

Only have to look at all the types that have been delisted to realize its probably mids with a ruck and KPD at some stage.

Pie fans will want a big tall at Rd 1 and hence McKernan or Lisle will appeal. Then you will have some wanting ball winners and hence Robinson should have been taken. But a nice balance of players and some good quality mids for future years. Blease and Smith would be very handy.

Essendon

KPD and hard running midfielders were asked for and with Hurley in rd 1 they would be happy. To get Heyne in Rd 2 was handy and then its taking a punt on McDonald who has heaps of potential. McCulloch late is a great get because of his versatility. Don’t be surprised if Sloane is a bolter.

Fremantle

Supporters of this club wanted everything. IM, OM, Small Fwds, ruck prospect and a KPD.

How could Freo fans be unhappy – they got something of everything. Have no doubt Rich, Robinson and Hall will all be super players. Schoemakers is just class and Geartner could be the steal of the draft if he lives up to potential. If these blokes can turn into senior footbalers (and I think they can) then along with Duffield, Mundy, Palmer, Crowley, Sandilands etc they will have a terrific nucleaus in years to come.

Geelong

Really was to take best available – what else do these blokes need?

Got the best available and with Cornelius, Ranga, DeBoer and Hanneberry they have arguably got the best overall first 4 picks.

Hawthorn

See Geelong. Best available again but a tall back is just as likely to go as someone like Yarran. Would depend on who drops but a Lisle would appeal as someone who could play back as well as forward.

Melbourne

KPF and KPD along with mids and utilities.

Some great gets in Watts obviously but Lisle, Suban by pick 20 and then Rockliff and Beams later on round out 5 players who could all be playing quality senior footy in 2-3 yrs.

North Melbourne

Strategy was really to hit young mids with pace and who could play in and out.

Taking Swift at #10 is bold IMO as the club that takes him will not want to waste their first pick in such a talented draft. Might get smashed for this selectiob but none of us know until draft day I guess. Zaharkis is a favourite of mine and is a nice mix with Swift. Banner is a wonderful replacement for a Simpson and then Mangan late is one of those kids that could go much earlier as he is a quality 17yo. Hunter and Jones represent a quality tall back/fwd for later on but could understand North fans wanting maybe someone a little earlier.

Port

Inside mids, KPF, Rucks and running backs were the wish list at ALberton. Think Vickery, Pearce, Still, Strauss, Banfield cover these needs pretty well. Rounds is speculative but potentially big reward.

Richmond

Rucks, KPF and mids were the order of the day for Punt Rd. Couldn’t pass on Sidebottom for Tigers and then took the gamble on Brown at 26. Renton is a talented ruck and then Hunt is another kid who could be very good in years to come.

St Kilda

Mids and key position defenders were what was on order from Saints.

I think in years to come St Kildas success or lack thereof will be defined in this draft. Ray and Cousins are bold and I applaud the Saints for that. Potentially adding fellas like Trengrove, Daly and Hill as talls and Klemke and Stanton wouldn’t be far from being ready if they are going to make the grade.

Swans
KPF and KPD types along with some midfielders were what was requested. Obviously didn’t go in that order but McKernan is a tall of real talent. Stopp is a talent for later along with Purves and are real talented footballers. Sheahen fits what Roos has been asking for and Suckling and Anthony are mids that are close to being ready – certainly Anthony is.

West Coast Eagles

Rucks, in and out mids and then a small fwd was the feedback. Big Nat is the ruck then Hill, Walters and Shannon are really good gets and round out their list wonderfully. Duryea and Ballantyne are handy late but like all others are speculative at this point.

Western Bulldogs

Smorgon said exactly what all the Bulldogs told us. Big boys that can play fwd and take marks. Cordy certainly fits that and whilst Lynch is only 191cm he is a very physical fwd. They may go for someone bigger around here but don’t take anything away from OKeefe he is a very worthy pick their. Young and Davis are better than their respective picks as well.

Swift, Zaharakis, Banner? Yes please :D Would look good in our midfield in a few years

Great effort all-round, pretty obvious you know what you're talking about and you've done your research as to what each club needs.

i would be very happy with freo's picks. rich and robinson would dramatically improve our clearances. schoemaker would love the spaces at subi, might go with o'keefe instead but schoemaker is about the same value.

not sure about chris hall rather James Strauss or Matthew De Boer.

sharples, if fit would be a walk up starter in our team as a small forward.

Snoop's is always the best mock draft.

last year he got Collingwood's picks spot on as well as a few others.

In a lot of situations last year, Snoop got the player right going to the correct club, but got the round wrong.

So he has a great idea of what clubs are after and is a keen follower of the Under 18 comps.

Really looking forward to see how these compare.

In terms of Collingwood, i think Blease is the sort of player that Hine targets. I have my questions because he seems really lightly built although his height is perfect for an onballer. Dont think he'd be ready for footy in 09.

Reckon Roughead would be a great selection where you have him but i think he will be selected a bit higher.

Very good read Snoop, it's always interesting to read a few contrasting opinions.

I have major concerns about Cornelius I must say; and I've seen ten or more games of him this year. Yes, he has very sticky mits, but he's not overly quick, and at his light build and in-between height, I just can't see him as more than a third tall.

He seems to go missing far too often, especially at VFL level, and doesn't work hard enough off the ball.

I have him middle/late second round, so I'd be interested to see what you think his other advantages are?

Also, at this stage, Richmond are poised to take only 3 picks, with 4 delistings, but Adam Thomson being traded in to the list.

Brisbane

Strategy was to seek out mids that were hard running and then try and snag a couple of KP players late.

Whenever I have done a mock these blokes are never happy – but when you only need mids then getting Harlett and Jetta in the first two rounds would appeal.

Yep, didn't think you addressed our needs so well previously, but this year looks good.

I have major concerns about Cornelius

I have the same feeling, but some people rate him as high as 9th and then some people have him slipping down the draft.

He is one of the first names I check to see where people rate him.

I still am yet to put my finger on why I keep wanting to slip him further and further down my list of names, I almost dropped him further down my mock draft.

What a terrific effort Snoop. Great read, and must have taken quite a long time to put that all together. Pretty happy with those four selection for Carlton, and it certainly addresses some of our needs.

Spot on, i'd be happy with the selections. One question Snoop, Jayden Post, forgot to include him or don't you see him getting drafted?
