I imagine its easy to act mighty and wise concerning draft picks using hindsight. For the most part, our higher picks in recent years have done well for themselves considering the amount of time they've had in the game. It's easy to say 'Thomas is better than Murphy, why didn't we pick him?' after seeing them play for two years - a luxury that recruiters don't have.

Likewise you've given almost no consideration to how long these players have been in the system. Murphy is still developing and IMO will end up becoming a superior player than Thomas given some time. Gibbs has played one raw year in the AFL, so judging him now is grossly premature.

Give it some time people. The club is in far better form than any of us could've hoped for two years back. These things don't happen overnight.

I hope your right, but I have no doubt your surely wrong!!!! We need a recruiting overhall & Thomas is an absolute freak & will be the next big thing in the AFL... Pendelbury is Dal Santo Mark 2!!!

Except it, we stuffed up!!

KCola - you're right on the draft picks. Its way, way too early to judge most of those guys.

But "The club is in far better form than any of us could've hoped for two years back"? Really? In the last 2 years, we've finished last, second-last (including 11 straight losses), and lost the first game of '08 by 5 goals to the only team that finished below us last year. And that is far better than any of us could have hoped? I fail to see how we could have done worse, honestly.

As for last night, there were some good signs, but what most people are upset about was the lack of intensity and effort from the players. First game of the season, everything to play for, the biggest crowd we'll see all year - and they play with that pathetic effort? How many tackles did we lay all game?

We're perfectly happy about losing when the players give their all. But last night just wasn't good enough...

Except I might accept it instead. Plus I hate Thomas to the bone!

Murphy is already better than Thomas and Pendlebury after his game last night.

Class act in every respect.

Copped a knock in the second half and wasn't 100% after that.

But he's expected to win games for a priority pick side and lift it over the line when Thomas and Pendlebury just go out and play as the icing on the cake. Murphy would be a premiership player like Selwood and running free to cut up teams if he was playing for the Cats.

Murphy is definitely a better player than Thomas, but Pendlebury is another story, I'm a great admirer of what Pendlebury brings to his football club, on and off the field, he's the Captain in waiting when Burns retires at the end of this season.

I think Murphy and Pendlebury are very similar and it'll be interesting to see what the Pendlebury responds to extra attention this season like Murphy got last season.

I suspect you are right on this score.

Some people around here are soft as butter.

There are aspects of last night's loss to last years wooden sooner which are simply unacceptable! Sure some blokes ran out of legs, others slaughtered possession etc.

That's not what had supporters like me seeing red. What did was that WE WERE SOFT! We lacked intensity and we got smashed in the hard ball gets - even when we displayed superior skills early on. As a team, we tackled like a bunch of netballers - and that's being unfair to netballers!

We are a young team coming from the depths BUT until we start exhibiting intensity and discipline in our game we're going absolutely nowhere. Some people may prefer to stick their heads in the sand and accept this SOFT S##T but it twists my gut and my mind to watch it - IT'S UN-CARLTONLIKE!

No offence I know I am new here, but I have been reading big footy posts for a long time.. Love this site & I love the Carlton Footy Club!!!

Stop being so dam precious & take some critism for a change.. How is our club going to improve with this crap attitude!!

You dont stay on the bottom for more than 6 years if your any good or make correct recruiting decisions!!!

Maybe, rather than sticking your head in the sand and pretending that it will all be ok, you need to look at the facts.

Yes we are very young, but there are major issues with our club. The fact that we effectively lay down after half time without giving a yelp is pathetic. 2 goals against a very ordinary side is not good enough. The pressure at the ball was not good enough, the tackling was not good enough, the use of the ball was not good enough. Unfortunately, it is the same players making the same mistakes and that is where the frustrations come from.

Yes, they were positives, but until our so called 'senior' players step up and start performing, we will have the same discussions week in week out.

You can choose to stick up for them and say it'll be ok, or you can discuss the issues and how we can try and solve them. Choice is yours, but dont question the loyalty of Carlton fans who are showing some passion just because you dont like the comments they are making, when the majority of the comments that i have read are pretty spot on.

Good comments as if we are realistic the fact is Richmond will be a bottom four team and we only managed two goals in a half, a very ordinary performance, the major problem l can see this year is no Centre half forward and still a ordinary defence, what we really need is players like Gibbs,Murphy,Grigg,Hampson to step up to another level and as a result of this the overall team perfromance will improve.

But the real point is that we played a very ordinary team last night apart of a few quality players Richmond have and our second half performance was SUB STANDARD, l think everyone would have expected quite rightfully a better performance.

What ever helps you sleep at night!!!!

Get your head of the god dam sand you ignorant fool!!! Our club has some major issues!!! very MAJOR!!

It is Good Friday - leave the sand alone (He says eating his Scotch fillet and washing it down with a Stella)

Don't turn to the pineapple for help EddieB. Stick to your Meat Lovers, your supreme, your roasted chicken, or better still your chilli laden Hot and spicey. Fruit has no place on a pizza!

That is a legitimate claim, but I was referring more so to off the field (apologies for not making that more clear). A few years ago our board was in tatters, we had a President with no direction (and no money), a coach past his used by date and no where near as many young prospects on the field.

Compare that to now: Dick Pratt, Greg Swann, Steven Icke, money in the coffers and plenty of exciting youngsters on the way. That goes without mentioning Judd. Ratten in head coaching position reminds me of Hawthorn a few years back with Alister Clarkson. Hawthorn has come good now, and that gives me some hope - because we were only a couple of years behind. :thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu:

My 10 Cents worth.

I have waited some 24 hours to cool down before venting my spleen.

In reading all the positive and negative threads, reports etc etc since the final siren against Bitchmond, all I can say is DISAPPOINTED.

Every excuse in the book does not detract from lack of performance, lack of commitment and lack of integrity in the jumper you play for. To play so insipidly, with lack of heart to me smells to me of lack of respect for the club, jumper, sponsors and most importantly US the supporter. In my mind, patience is one thing; if they busted a valve whilst playing with 100% commitment to the cause I would accept that.

An official apology should be issued to the supporters, rather than a typical Wallet script written diatribe that does nothing to instill me with any confidence for the year to come.

And that clown Patrick Smith can go and f*** himself as well…..Sycophants – Pfft.

N.B - This attitude probably is arrived at after six years off less than favorable performance - I expected more in a year offering so much preseason.
Please feel free to castigate.

Very disappointing performance on Thursday night

I can't understand how we can get into confoartable positions, then fall away.
It's been happening for some long now, and am hoping the team can start plauying out the full 4 qtrs asap

The last thing we need is another long season without any progress
