So... Hale or Bailey?

Looking forward to seeing how it works out this week

General consensus was the two rucks were the biggest factor in over-running the Cats. I missed the first quarter, but everything I saw reinforced how important it is for us to have a ruck who won't get dominated.

But even by playing Hale and Bailey against Cox and Nicnat, your still not going to win the rucks and will be worse off run and carry wise.

Do we change our structure completely, or keep our structure the same (as we have all year) and play to our strengths?

Big two weeks for Bailey, if he plays well then I say he stays in the side with Hale.

I ask the question, who are our 5 slowest players a lot people think we are to slow with bailey and Hale in the same team. Assuming Bailey plays.

1. Hale
2. Bailey
3. Shoenmakers
4. Roughead
5. ....I cant think of a clear 5th place

Are we really to slow?

Not about the Eagles really, it's about the Cats, Swans and Pies. I think we can/will beat everyone else regardless, but those three have midfields the equal of ours, and how have our structures held up against those teams that can match us in the middle?

We can't carry Hale as first ruck against them.

Schoey and Roughead would have Hodge covered comfortably IMO. Both are very quick for KPP.

Your batting at 50% on that list mate... ;)

So who won the ruck off?

I was happy with Bails until he failed to out mark Cassissiii. Hale's marking late was very good.

I'd give the chocolates to Bails.

I thought Hale was better than Bailey today.
Having said that I'd give Bailey another chance to find some form. He need to do more around the ground.
Play them both again against the Suns.

My concern with Hale is that he misses easy shots on goal when he needs to kick them which undoes his good marking in front of goal. He kicked 4 today but missed 2 to 3 easy shots when they were needed. My other concern is that he seems to take a bit of time to get into the game. Maybe I am just thinking of the past 2 games and this could be said of the entire midfield but that's the way I see it. As has been stated by many people, Max seems to offer more in the ruck which to my thinking means the question of which one to play is not a done deal. I hope they both play together again next week although it doesn't look like they can both play come finals.

Hale has genuine lazy spells in games. Whether he blows up or just switches off mentally I am not quite sure. But he is seen walking far too often in games when he should be pushing into position.

Max can clear the congestion with his taps. Hale cant because he refuses to jump. Against the cats when the ball is tapped straight down to ground their bigger bodies hold sway.

Bailey is our first ruck.
Hale will make way for him if he is not needed in the forward line.
Hale is competing more with Gunston than Bailey

And Dale Thomas last year and the list goes on....

But he did out mark Ben Rutton once upon a time ;)

Think Max copped a rocket at half time because he was a tackling machine after that.

Hale very solid again.

What's that, you want to see it again?

Going into the game I firmly believed Bailey should be first choice with Roughy...I'm not so sure after today.
Despite his kicking, Hale's contested marking in fwd 50 was really impressive.

Well, after today:

Bailey is slow to move to the contest, and is easily outbodied in marking contests - on at least four or five occassions he didn't even get to the contest when he should have been the target. Conversely, he was the dominant tap ruck on the ground.

Hale forced spillages, clunked some good grabs around the ground and up forward, and could have had 6 goals if he kicked straight. He didn't manage to give our mids much in the way of first use, but also held his own, far better than last week.

So what did we learn? Not a great deal. Both have elements they need to work on - my personal belief is that against the best sides we gain more with the better ruckman, but by the same token, that's where you'd expect a "get out of jail" bomb down the line to be used most often.
