FJD - to an extent it is correct.

The social club was closed yesterday, without any warning to members. they have cited financial losses for this - however there is more to that than meets the eye, and some of those issues were brought up at the AGM.

the news on tv up here tonight keeps citing 'repeated efforts and advertising/promotions to try and draw ppl in' - but that is a load of crap - the advertising of the club has been virtually non existant for 12 months now. they used to advertise in the local papers, the courier mail, have trivia nights, entertainment nights, etc etc etc, they all stoped over 12 months ago.

When they did actively promote the club and services, it was always great. Plenty of ppl in there. Used to have to book a week ahead for wednesday night dinner, and then sometimes for thursday night dinneres.

They used to have mothers and fathers day champagne breakfasts, lunches with a legend (barassi, keenan), sponsored nights (ie jacobs creek wines, beer of the week etc etc etc) Happy hours, and a fantastic lunch and dinner menu. That all went out the window too.
And they used to entice ppl to training by having football staff come up after training and answer members questions etc.

They surely couldn't expect ppl to continue coming to the social club when the services were so badly diminished.

And yes - the crowd numbers are down. They have publicly said they have budgeted for a 27,000 plus crowd per game this year, but that isn't happening. Once again tho, there is no active advertising compared to previous seasons.

And yes, membership numbers are down by over 3000.

All of that together would surely have put a large dent in the finances.

Social club woes

Fully agree with comments by Danni. The writing however, was on the wall but I didn't expect it to happen until after the 2001 season.

The Board indicated that they were going to do this (at the AGM) but faced with a member backlash over the initial sackings and reduction in hours I suspect they decided to post-pone it. The next step is the removal of the social club all together - and the arrival of the promised "viewing room."

We all know that it doesn't make sense, if a business is losing money to outsource part of its revenue generating activities (the bistro & bar). If there was some kind of strategy in place, advertising campaigns, promotions, anything! I don't know what they were. I know there were a couple of promotions occuring in the club, but I only knew that from actual going there - not from any advertising or mail out on behalf of the club.

The social club has never widely been promoted, how many people know that you could have a meal overlooking the gabba for pittance? Many people and not just AFL fans would give their right leg to be able to eat and relax at the Gabba - for some people it is a real buzz.

I fail to understand why, when Brisbane Lions are one of the few AFL clubs which still have (oops had) a social club overlooking their home ground fail to support the idea. Many clubs in Melbourne are actually spending big bucks to get their social clubs back to their home ground or as close to it as possible.

Certainly the club has been losing money, but it is the only tangible service (apart from attending the games) that members get from the club. The Lions shouldn't feel left out, the whole economy is in tatters, people don't have the money they used to... however let me ask this, if you could have a three course meal for under $10 per person, had free parking, centrally located venue, friendly staff and the added bonus of footy on the t.v. would you go there?

Here's an idea, why not ask the members for their support. How about calling a meeting and asking for suggestions, support, donations anything???? How about just asking. We do want to help - it is our club too. Its about time the Board listened.

If we really are in that much financial difficulty what about selling that rather expensive piece of land currently used by the players as a car park.... or build a multi-storey car park there at least we would have year round revenue!
