Did he ever think why the goal umpires wavew the flags in the first place. It's to officially state that a goal has been scored, and so there's absolutely no confusion with the goal umpy at the other end. There have been situations where a goal umpire has signaled a a scorem then changed it to another one. Then he waved the correct flag after that had been done. Imagine if there wasn't a flag. How would the other goal umpire know whether to count both scores, or just the first one or the second one, let alone see down the other end, especially if it's a foggy morning.

There's a reason for everything Kevin. Why change things just for the sake of change?

As for kicking in before the waving of the flag, what if the full back stuffs up the kick, the full forward grabs the ball and kicks the ball straight into the goal umpire while he's waving the flag? Yeah, that's a smart move.

You've got to think, why was a certain rule made in the first place?

On one hand, he wants to protect player welfare by having more interchange and shorter quarters, then one the other, he always wants to speed up the game. They contradict each other.

Does he ever think that the player and the umpires might want to have some breaks to set up their position in an already fast game?

Players must be grateful for any breaks they get. No wonder they think Sheedy is weird.

I personally think he does it to see what he can get away with.

And why challenge eddie to see if essendon can get 40,000 members before collingwood. Seems a bit odd when they can't accomodate 40,000 at colonic as well as all the corporates, empty seats etc.

Any comment , dan24 ?

because its good for football, and in particular, victorian football
this challenge is a win-win situation for both clubs, regardless of either of them reaching 40,000. it will have some effect on the sales of membership figures and in the end 40,000 or no 40,000 both teams will win out

But how can you fit 40,000 at colonic and without getting some of those reserved for medallion club, the seats which are always empty etc etc ?

And don't discount Hawthorn or Richmond beating you both to the 40,000

Dogs and Cats Jokes start here.....

Pessimistic,

God I am sick of your underhanded swipes at Colonial Stadium. You have NO idea.

Firstly, statistics have shown that about half a clubs membership attends each clubs home matches. If Essendon have 40,000 members, then approximately half of those would go to each home match we play. What has the capacity of the 52,000 seat stadium got to do with it? It's the second-biggest AFL stadium in the country for christs sake. Has this not occured to you?

Carlton's membership is about 30,000 and they play at a 30,000 seat stadium. Is there any problems for their supporters accessing Optus Oval? No, there isn't. If you're worried about capacity, why don't you bring up Optus Oval. Why always bring up a 52,000 seat stadium?

Essendons draw this year will allow all Essendon supporters to attend. We play 7 home matches at Colonial, but 5 of these are against non-Victorian teams. 5 of them!!! I'm sure even you would agree that Colonial is the best venue for these 5 home matches for the Bombers. All of them will attract between 40-45,000........PERFECT for a stadium of Colonials capacity.

We play 4 home mathces at the MCG. These are against Collingwood, Carlton, Richmond, and the Kangaroos. In fact, taking into account both home and away matches, we play 9 at Colonial and 9 at the MCG. This makes us just as much an MCG club as it does a Colonial stadium club.

We will easily be able to accomodate 40,000 members. In fact, I believe we will be able to accomodate 50,000 and probably 60,000 in theory. Remember, only half (or less) of a clubs membership attends each home game, and the Colonial stadium home games are the less atttractive home games. Essendon might only get 40% of their membership to attend Colonial games, because they are less attractive, while our MCG home games against the big clubs may attract 60% of our membership.

30,000 Carlton members is easily enough for Optus Oval, and they still want more members. I'm sure the Blues would want, and could accomodate 40,000 members. So, why in the hell can't Essendon accomodate 50-60,000 members at the second biggest venue in the country???? Especially, taking into account that we only play 7 home matches there.

The other issue is, that a lot of people buy a 22 game membership. For Victorian football fans, most of your teams away matches can be attended, right? So, Essendon, with both 9 games at Colonial, and the 100,000 MCG will have no problem selling 22 game memberships. Members attend away games too Pessimistic.

Why in the hell are you complaining about the capacity of Colonial AGAIN when 5 of out 7 home matches are against interstate teams? We play 9 matches at a 100,000 seat venue and 9 matches at a 52,000 seat venue, 5 of those against interstate teams and 2 of them being away matches.

So stop complaining please. We are not even close to saturation point with membership. We could accomodate 50,000 easily I reckon. If by some miracle, it started to become a problem, we could start selling an "MCG" package.
