my favourite author is dead at 49.

Adams was the author of the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy trilogy (in 4 parts). Also Dirk Gently, the Meaning of Liff and many others.

He was 49 and died whilst working out in a gym....he leaves a wife and a 6 year old daughter.

I am very sad.

I have read "The Guide" books over and over and still find bits which make my eye's water.

He was one of the most original writers I have read, and is able to ridicule the seriousness with which people treat some aspects of life.

RIP

PTW, I am devistated. Hadn't heard until I read this thread. I've read, watched, and listened to everything by Douglas Adams in fact I was listening to HHGTTG on tape for the hundredth time in the car on the way to Adelaide on the weekend.

I don't know if anyone else ever played the old computer game of HHGTTG but it was a text based adventure that had you in stitches every step of the way. Also came with pocket fluff, a badge the read 'don't panic' in large freindly letters and a pair of peril sensitive sunglasses that turned completely black at the first sign of trouble (which was all of the time).

His book 'Last Chance to See' was a brilliantly witty but troubling travelog of his trips to various parts of the earth to see some of the endangered animal species of the world and well worth a read.

Hopefully we'll all meet up with him for a final meal and a pan-galactic gargleblaster at the restaurant at the end of the universe.

It has been proposed that the great man be honoured on May 25th. This is to be "official towel day"; have your towel on you at all times on this day.

I forget where I read about this - try www.douglasadams.com or www.h2g2.com for more details.

It's a pity that he's not just spending a year dead for tax reasons. Wouldn't it be appropriate if he was to come back as a bowl of petunias?
