We decided to take in some of the culture beforehand; the Kwyjibo took me to the shrine and we hung around outside it for awhile just absorbing the atmosphere. A drunk old guy with a Demons scarf yelled a bunch of obscenities at us

Ventured into the Cricketers Arms to see if anyone from here was there, but it was so damn crowded that we went in and out in five minutes and figured we'd better get in line.

I sat in the Ponsford, bottom level, in about the 10th or 15th row up from the ground. The chain link fence was just to my left. I had on a long-sleeved #10 guernsey with Orange on it. They turned out to be good seats to have in the odd quarters but it was tough to see things happening at the other end.

The pre-game ceremonies reminded me of the Super Bowl. I'd say I've only been to one sporting event bigger than this one (1996 Fiesta Bowl).

It was one of the most exciting games I've seen in any sport...I've been to a lot of gridiron games where the score was pretty one-sided (and most of the Essendon matches too). The biggest difference is that in Aussie rules things happen so much more quickly and major shifts in momentum happen.
I enjoyed the rowdiness of the Ponsford stand but I am a bit disappointed that more people around us didn't get into it. At times I felt like I was the only one in red and black making any noise and felt stupid. I do enjoy the looks I get from people though, particularly when I scream out "BALL!" or "BOMBERS" in my accent.

It was fun taunting the Collingwood cheer squad...mostly in the form of adding "SUCKS" to the "Coll-ing-wood" chant and pointing at the scoreboard (although I think this practice brought me some bad karma when we fell behind).

Thank hell we won...I had witnessed the Carlton nightmare in person and couldn't imagine how much worse losing to the Pies would be.

It was only my fifth footy match now as a spectator, but I knew until I'd see an Anzac Day clash, I hadn't seen anything

Essendon fans have always been 'quiet' for as long as I've known.

More laid back, refined, cultured and conservative than most

Pre-selling of tickets don't help, scatters everyone around and the rowdier groups can amass.

But in terms of atmosphere doesn't get much better than Anzac Day. Better than Grand Final Day when all people in suits dominate the crowd.

But having said that I'd still rank the 1996 Final against the Weagles as my #1 game easily in terms of overall atmosphere (not a great game but being in the crowd the last 10 minutes were amazing), 1995 Anzac Day probably a close second.

Glad you enjoyed the day - nothing beats AFL
