So who is the most underrated player in the AFL?

It's not weird at all. You're clearly looking at the game on the weekend (where Guthrie wasn't even playing in the same part of the ground as Hill, let alone directly on him) and I was clearly referring to the previous game before this weekend that Geelong played against West Coast (Round 21 last year), when Guthrie was Hill's direct opponent.

That would make sense. Either way Hill is not underrated.

Jay Schulz is good but the glowing plaudits he has received from everyone are OTT. Very good player, yes, but best key forward in the game? Better than Jack Reiwoldt, Buddy, Cloke etc.
NO.
It appears that all that counts in whether you are over/underrated on BF is your last month of footy.
Schulz has kicked more than 35 goals in a season twice, and never over 50, and for the last 3 years averaged 2.2 goals per game.
Jack has kicked over 35 goals 4 times, and has averaged around 3 goals per game for 4 years or so.
Cloke has kicked 35 goals or more 6 times, and has averaged nearly 3 goals per game over 3 years.
Meanwhile Buddy has kicked more than Schulz has ever kicked in a season every year since 2008, and has averaged over 3.5 goals per game over that time.
Schulz is very good, and underrated, but not as good as many posters here are making out.

All very true, however "Schulzistderbestetorschuetzeimganzenspiel" has played in some average sides since then.... Cloke and Franklin have played in very good teams... Reiwoldt is the exception he has played at Richmond, but they always kick it to him.....

put me down for Steve johnson... even i underate him at times and then he coves out with a 35 possy 3 goal game with 7645 dreamteam points...

Michael Hibberd. One of Essendon's best players, doesn't get noticed much.

Was by far and away the best small defender last year. The lack of AA was hilariously puzzling.

Bradley Hill is another for mine, been in the Hawks top 5 players this year but probably because he is in a great side, he rarely seems to garner a mention amongst the top kids in the comp.

There are a few and for obvious reasons I'll leave out my side:

The biggest one Nick Smith (Syd). Comfortably the best lock down defender in the comp. Even last week, Sydney were thrashed, gave Thomas a bath! You could add in Pupolo from Hawthorn as another. Surprisingly Corey Enright and Joel Corey have been very underrated their whole careers.

I'll try do one from each team
Adelaide - Smith
Brisbane - Rockliff (seriously this guy dominates even when his team gets owned, he's such a gun)
Carlton - Simpson
Collingwood - Beams, I know people rate him to some degree but he gets in such good positions. I liked Fasolo as a defender so far, so in time I think he may get underrated in how he does.
Essendon - Honestly don't know. Howlett seems to be inconsistent. I guess Heppell, some people call him a seagull but his pressure is underrated.
Fremantle - Sutcliffe
Geelong - Guthrie. **** this guy is gonna be good. Horlin-Smith looked good too but lets give it some more time.
Gold Coast - Another tough one, I think Swallow has emerged to be the player we'd thought he'd be and Prestia has done great. In spite of saying that, I'm gonna say May. Great defender.
GWS - Callan Ward, this guy is amazing. Mumford is another people have rated, but the fact he got traded is amazeballs.
Melbourne - Nathan Jones. Have always liked this guy.
Hawthorn - Cheney I agree with whats being said, but I wanna throw the name Bruest who still doesn't get enough love. I actually forgot Hawthorn, maybe my brain is trying to tell me that they are far too good so forget about even rating a team with such a bunch of guns.
North Melbourne - I still think that even despite getting AA Thompson doesn't get enough props, even Boomer Harvey (who I hate a lot but think he's a great player). I think Dal Santo's influence has been a bit underrated as well.
Port Adelaide - Ebert. Boak has started getting some respect but Ebert does so much hard work, I love watching him play. Honorable mentions to O'Shea and Schulz.
Richmond - I like Richmond, but it's hard to find an underrated player here. I think that Rance and Riewoldt cop a bit of shit considering they are fantastic player on their day.
St Kilda - I don't watch enough of Saints to really know, but Hayes barely gets mentioned in the top players. He provides so much effort and with that effort and tackles, he allows others to get such a high disposal count, and in doing so he still somehow maintains his high level of disposals.
Sydney - Nick Smith, I love this guy. Whether his team is struggling or when they are on top, he'll always give top effort. Luke Parker I choose as well, chose him over Tom Mitchell in DT and it's worked. Parker is gonna be a gun.
Western Bulldogs - Ryan Griffen, this guy has always been underrated but I've seen people start to rate him. (translation, I don't know enough but I love the likes of Hunter and Mccrae)
West Coast - I agree with Rosa, but I've really liked Yeo.

Just a drunk opinion, not bothered if you agree or not, but then again people bitch if you don't.

Jones gets praised so much every week for being the only guy who tries at Melbourne it has turned him overrated

I know what you are trying to say, but it's not the case. I know only a few people seem to "try" from Melbourne but Jones isn't just a honest battler, he tries and he does something with it. Garland I guess is another one to call underrated when he plays.

Daniel Rich - Would be rated so much higher if we didn't have stats. Regularly opens the game up with his kicking.

Luke Ball - Not only wins contested ball like few others but is so composed with his disposal under pressure.

Cale Hooker - Reads the play so well.

Stephen Hill - Can actually win his own ball these days. Is fast becoming a complete midfielder. Wouldn't surprise me if we say a Griffen-like breakout.

Corey Enright - Always spoken about as underrated but never mentioned when we talk about the greats. He should be a future hall of famer. The best defender of the last decade, tall or small.

Heath Shaw - Think he gets underrated because he's such a tosser. Now he's at GWS no one cares. He doesn't get nearly as much credit for genuinely being one of the best defenders in the game. The fact that he's also one of the best rebounders is extremely impressive.

Colin Garland - I was impressed by his ability to stand up under extreme pressure last year.

Nathan Grima - He's a glove. Very rare to see him have more than a goal a game kicked on him.

Jay Schulz - Doesn't get as much of the ball as some of the better forwards but it doesn't matter because he takes his opportunities. Stupidly courageous. Would get more recognition if he weren't injured so often.

Sean Dempster - Extremely reliable defender who can shut down talls and smalls.

Shannon Hurn - The best kick in the game. Doesn't get a heap of the ball but don't forget he's taking all the kickouts which have a huge influence on the game. Also very strong when it comes to intercept marking.
