Agree with all except Tarrant, hes a gutless little boy... :D :thumbsu:

Well he's not little and I'll wait for the season to start before I decide if he's got any guts. Both Solly and Tarrant will be good value for Freo, another hard player like Solomon added to our list certainly makes us a team to look out for, it's a massive change to a few years ago when we used to get physically mauled by teams like the Bombers and Lions.

People keep talking about Tarrant's individual value in our forward line but it's what his presence in the forward 50 does for our other key forwards that will make him all the more worthwhile. He'll be a great tall marking forward that Our Jeffrey can crumb around and he'll take one of those extra defenders off Pav. Add to all this the emerging talent Murphy and we have a forward line that will bytch slap many opposition defences.

You gave up pick 52 as well, which we used for Brock O'Brien. Can't fault that from our end.

I can't see a fault from our end either. Houli was a genuine first round prospect but for an injury concern (back injury I think), but since arriving at Essendon he has proved to be the best of our draftees.

i think both clubs got what they required at the time, ie fremantle a couple of experienced players to aid the premeirship push whilst essendon got a couple of youngsters to help with their rebuilding. win all round i reckon

can't see a fault...are you serious?! we got basically nothing for one of our most senior players. i think it's a joke...the lack of respect that our club shows its players astounds me sometimes.

You've drafted reasonable players with the picks, and they will have an impact in a few years when Solomon will be in decline. Can't say he was let go for "basically nothing". Also, he has clearly had injury issues, and can't play the role that Sheeds needed him to (KPP). Fair value I think, although if he is over his injury issues we will have got a fantastic deal.

Having said that, the way it was done was a bit of a disgrace (icluding Johnson's treatment) and a bad look for the club.

For Tarrant to be worth a first round pick and Medhurst (who I dont rate) and soloman to be worth 2 3rd round picks and we give you our 4th is a disgrace. He has been a great servant to our club and made us walk taller at times. Was a favourite of mine up until last year when kept giving away silly free kicks. What some people dont realise is that last year when we had about 10 injuries soloman was dropped. We finished 15th had injuries and he struggled to keep his place.

Having said that would love to see him get his weight down and knees good but think his time has passed. Would love to be proven wrong but we dont usually let go of good players for nothing (which is what we effectively got for him - talking draft picks not who we used them on)

Well you'd know him better than me Bombs Away, but if he couldn't hold his place despite your injuries, keeps giving away silly free kicks, has injuries, needs to loose weight, and who in your wors "his time has past", then what do you think he is worth in a trade? Sounds like you over-rate him in terms of his trade value, and are living in the past in terms of what he had offered the Bombers. He also sounds like a player who needs a new start and challenge, and bingo, that's what he got.

I think we as supporters get attached to players, where as the people who run the clubs are now seeing it more and more as a business. Alex Ferguson at manchester united is the master, he quite often sells players when they are at their peak at 31-32 years of age, knowing that their value is still high even though they only have 2-3 years left in the game. Sheedy does the same thing, unloading guys that still have trade value (Caracella, Heffernan, Blumfield, Solomon etc) to bring in youth.

You gave us Solly and pick 52. We gave you picks 42 (from Richmond as part of the Polak deal) and 47.

So essentially that's Solly for a 3rd rounder. Brisbane got a 2nd rounder for Aker. If that's something to measure it by, then it's probably about right - or even pretty good for Essendon. :)

Our "ins" for trade period were:
Solly
Tarrant
pick 8
pick 42
pick 52

Our "outs" were:
Polly
Medhurst
pick 8 - on traded
pick 13
pick 42 - on traded
pick 47

The "net ins" were:
Solly
Tarrant
pick 52

The "net outs" were:
Polly
Medhurst
pick 13
pick 47

ie - pretty much the net change for Freo was pick 13 to improve our list significantly. :thumbsu:

We offered him a one year deal, he refused it. He was well within his right to look for security, Essendon FC was well within their right to learn from the Mercuri saga and protect themselves from entering a contract with a player with on-going injury concerns.

I love Solly, but he had a chance to stay at Essendon and he knocked it back.

Losing Solly gave us an opportunity to draft Mal Michael. Now Solly can play more positions, but there is little doubt that if he stayed at Essendon he would have continued to be asked to play on bigger bodied forwards. Mal Michael does that better.

We also improved our draft position in what was one of the best drafts of all time in a period were we need to continue to introduce young talent into the club.

It's sad to see Solly go and I wish him all the best, but Essendon FC for a nice change performed extremely well during the draft/trade period.

Totally agree with you there longy about our performance in the trade period and what you have said. Just sorry to see him go but as you know there is 2 sides to every coin and he may have struggled a bit to get a game if not at peak fitness this season..

Yer... kind of....? but Tarrant will definitely play.

By the way, sounds like the Tiges are pretty happy with Polak.

All's well that ends well.

Yeah exactly. Tarrant will definitely play, and Solly will more than likely play, whereas both Polly and Medders might have played.

I reckon we did very well to come out of those trades only pick 13 lighter, with an improved list. :)

Even better than that I think. Collard could well have been targetted for that pick, or certainly considered. Both he and O'Brien came to us desopite the predictions of them being taken earlier. Just really good judgement by the recruiting staff all round.

You've made the mistake of calling a dirty player a gutsy player. Soloman has given more sacktaps then any other comp in the league, bit if push came to shove hes the last guy who'd be willing to stick his neck out for his club.

Can you please inform us as to how you are soooo knowledgeable on Solly?

Collard for me was the surprise of the draft.

I was certain he would be gone long before we had a pick!!

I am either a very bad judge, or we have a bargain on hands,

I have been a critic of our trading in the past. But our drafting lately is spot on.

P.S. Look out for Caleb!! That boy is a gun!!

Solomon is too slow to play AFL at a high standard, I would be surprised if he is a core player this season, although sometimes these trades somehow inspire players to better things. While trading Solly for a low pick (40 odd is low for an experienced player) hurts a little, I am not dissapointed, I think he had very little to offer Essendon this year and we free up salary cap and hopefully the kid we got with his pick is a gun.

performed extremely well...at the risk of sounding emotional, i disagree. from the outset it was either going to be solly or jj who left. given that jj is a two time best and fairest, it was gonna be solly. i don't think either of these players got the respect they deserved. still on the list...bolton, winderlich. these are players who aren't, and will never be, anywhere near as good as solly or jj. the reason we didn't get rid of them is cause noone wanted them! picking up kids might be well and good, but they haven't proven themselves, might promise a lot now and not deliver. as each year goes by, i lose respect for the club i've followed the whole 25 years of my existence. if we continue to lose emotion and passion for the game, it wont be worth anything...i'll get off my soap box now!

I suspect Essendon doesn't have a Board of its own. Sad really.

Hey, seeing as there are so many essendon supporters on the Freo Board, can you help me out with your line of thinking. It seems to go along the lines of;

Solomon is too slow, too injured, and just plain old passed it for AFL and will never play again.

At the same stage, the line of thought says;

We never got the trade that he deserved and are generally unhappy that he was traded, or even considered for trade.

Has Kevin been at the club a little toooo long?
