I've just checked some of the quotes from the bookmakers for AFL teams to make the 8 next year.

Some interesting reading and some pretty tempting odds too, like

Adelaide$2.00

C'wood $3.25

Fremantle $4.00

Geelong $2.00

Port Adel $3.00

Richmond $2.10

Sydney $2.25

some pretty good action there, Port, Sydney and Geelong look particulary attractive...

Richmond $2.10 on a sure thing. Money for jam!

Geelong at $2.00 and Sydney at $2.25 look like money in the pocket as well. I had Geelong a 50/50 chance to make the 8 next year, but when they got White and Murphy, I reckon they're a chance for the top 4. The Swans showed some good form towards the end of last season, and it looks like Kelly will be fit for the start of next season...the first time he's been fully fit for many years.

Essendon's odds were $1.05! You're almost better off putting your money in a bank Christmas account.

1.05 for Essendon.
I'd put money on that, because there is no chance of Essendon missing the eight.
You won't get a lot back unless you put like a 1000 dollars on it, but there really is no chance of Essendon missing the 8.

I was considering putting some money on the saints for the premiership 8 weeks ago but decided that the $80 we were paying were too short and should wait until we paying $100.

Now we are something like $12 for the flag.

I think these latest odds are a little too generous but along with most of our fans, I'm just revelling in the momentum generated by the club over the past few months.

Sydney at $2.25, I'll take that right now thank you very much. Given a decent run with injuries are certainties to make it.

WCE2000 why would you want to tie up 1 large all year to earn a miserable 50 bucks, there are plenty of things you can do with a grand and get more than 50 in return with all the security of the Bombers making the final.

What do you mean by "almost" shinboners?

Last time I heard the banks were paying 6.4%, and the best thing is, even if some nut-case goes and breaks all of the bombers legs in training before round 1, the bank is still gonna have your $1064 sitting there for ya :p

And I agree about Sydney and Geelong, great odds. Fremantle looks like the best pick, but (now I'm gonna cop it

) Collingwood could conceivably scrape in, winning 4-5 more games than this year is not beyond them.

Hey, I might even put $5 on the doggies NOT making it..... i mean I haven't tipped them in 5 years (that worked out great

I wish you people would stop overrating Geelong. Top 4 material shinny? Not a chance. Sure they'll be on the fringe, but nothing more than last year. White's a good pick up and replacement for stoneham (although big bazza wasn't much chop in his latter days), but he hasn't set the world on fire the last couple of years.

Geelong still have their flaws...i.e consistent goal kicker and C.H.B. Fill those voids and I'll talk the cats up as well.

Don't think Sydney will be their either. Again haven't got the forward line to threaten. Goodes an Micky can't do all of it.

Freo are pretenders, let's face it!

Top 4

Essendon, Melbourne, Brisbane and North.

Pre-trades, I thought that the Cats would do well to hold their ground. The main problem they've had this season has been their lack of a consistent marking forward...they get the ball down their often enough. So, with Mitchell White, they have that problem solved. I rate Murphy as a pretty good player and he adds some experience to their midfield (which is really just Hocking and a bunch of kids). Their only real weakness is defence and a habit of moving Graham forward when they need to score...with White up forward, they can leave Graham down back.

The way I see it, you have Essendon well ahead of everyone else. Then a bunch of about 8 clubs, of which I reckon Geelong are one of them.

I agree with you on Freo, and you can add Port Adelaide and Collingwood as likely cellar dwellers.

Sydney and Richmond look the best bets.

Why would Sydney be at $2.20 ???

They have 13 home games and they have a returning Paul Kelly, not to mention, numerous promising up-and-comers in addition to the exciting Paul Williams. They are also extremely well coached and are very disciplined.

Richmond, even though we say it annually, will make the finals one of these years, and 2001 looks to be the year. They also have an astute young coach and a hungry list.

One of the reasons for good quotes on Sydney has to be that the bookmakers just don't rate the club on any level really.

Last season I was able to do very nicely (thanks very much) by backing the Swans when they were consistently quoted as underdogs.

Any punters out there would be advised to study the market on the Red and Whites this eason as they are consistently well priced by a bookmaking fraternity that just don't rate them.

It is also advisable, if you want to make some money, to bet on the Dockers when they play at Subi.

If the Dockers go 8-14, you can be guaranteed that 7 of those wins will be at home. They always start underdogs, yet they always win at least 5, possibly as many as 7, home games. Never bet on them on the road though. Never.

Dan - Just on the Freo thing - I agree but always check out what they are ppaying when visiting the SCG.

Fremantle have no trouble with Sydney, either here or in The West, you coould say that Sydney are Freo's 'bunnie' team actually, doesn't matter how well either is going, Freo seem to have an uncanny knack of beating Sydney, easily too !

So alwys check the market for them - its usually money in the bank !
