From the Centrelink website. I wonder if other Australian business owners are afforded similar welfare handouts. I'm not sure, but am amazed at the number of farmers who complain about social security, "dole bludgers" and funding for Aboriginal Australians without realising they get looked after pretty well.

"If you are responsible for a farm Centrelink can help with:

Payments if you are having financial problems on your farm.

Payments if you live in an Exceptional Circumstances area.

New Measures for Drought Affected Farmers.

Sugar Industry Reform Assistance.

Payments to assist with Tasmanian freight costs.

Services and programs for farmers.

Publications if you are responsible for a farm.

Accommodation and Renting Issues.

Owing money to Centrelink or the Family Assistance Office."

and.......

"Services and programs for self-employed or farmers:
Listed below are specific services and programs that you can use if you are self-employed or a farmer.

Dairy Type Grant - provides access to exit assistance for dairy farmers.
Environmental Management Systems Incentives Program - provides help with the costs of developing and implementing an Environmental Management System.
Farm Help - provides assistance to farmers and their families who are experiencing financial hardship.
Financial Information Service - provide free, independent and expert financial information.
Retirement Assistance for Farmers - provides opportunity for older, low income farmers who wish to give away the farm to the younger generation.
Rural Services - services for rural and regional Australia."

and there's also the thing about DIESEL..

so now every rural australian is a racist a bigot and uncaring
you have either been brought up in a house hold with a shaky marriage and poor family values or that story you just wrote is a complete lie.

when you some of you urban cowboys actually go out and see the real rural australia you may find that its not all like you would want people to believe. but please enjoy the confines of your room and ponder how good the world would be if it was just one big city
If you're an example of the "real rural Australia" then it's not for me, fella.

Hoss, this just validates your views (and mine!) about this issue! Clearly your father was not of the farming 'mould' in many senses!

So...I'm guessing that you can't read or at least didn't read my post. I am a rural Australian, you idiot. I have worked the last 17 years of my career in rural and remote communities. I made it clear several times in my post that you can't judge everyone the same. Why you have called me a liar? Well, I have no idea, other than the fact that you appear very defensive about all this. Maybe the truth hurts redneck??
Somebody clearly resents the fact they grew up on a farm now, don't they?

Centrelink look after our farm? Oh please. Stop listening to propaganda **********e. Some of you really have no idea how tough some farmers do it, do you?

crocodileman is an idiot and a troll. But to think some of you actually agree with some of his sentiments...I am ashamed to call you fellow Australians if you can possibly complain about farmers considering their input into this country.

Once there was a world full of tarrifs and no free trade.

Now we have a world of free trade and all sorts of dishonest barriers and government assistances instead.

It's all just a political game.

We've heard all this bull******** about how tough farmers do it, and everyone is sick to death of it - it's lies and deceitful.

Remember quite a few years ago when the local Lions Club in the city I lived organised a fodder drive for farmers in the Qld Western Downs region. We drove a convoy of trucks to these farms who supposedly had dying cattle and they didn't have the money to feed them. Even unemployed people and aged pensioners donated goods and money to this drive.... We pulled up at one farm and there were 3 brand new Range Rovers in the driveway!!! They still told us how hard they were doing it, but that picture has remained etched in my memory, especially considering at that point in my life I didn't own a car.

W went to the next property and the miserable old bastard didn't even thank us - just had this wry grin and a beer belly to match - do you want me to go on. They're lying swines!

I'm not an idiot nor a troll and I can assure you (as judging from these anti-farming threads) a lot of Australians agree with me also!

BG

I don't resent growing up on a farm at all. It was a wonderful place to grow up. My great-grandparents, grandparents, parents and now brother have all farmed in a very dry and marginal part of the WA wheatbelt (very unlike rural Victoria.) I can remember many more drought years, than good ones. When I finish up my job here, I'm heading home for the harvest and because I have leave next year, will be tractor driving during seeding too.

What I have stated is that primary producers get welfare help, just like any other group in the community. Probably more than other business owners. No one here has proved otherwise. One reason for the amount of aid farmers get, was that there was a time where they were not able to apply for the dole like others. I'm not sure if this still stands.

Farmers "whinge" and "talk shop", just like other occupations. Ever heard them whinge about banks, insurers, welfare recipients, politicians etc etc They complain about unions but belong to fairly politically active ones themselves (National Farmers Federation and Pastoralists and Graziers Association.) No occupation is beyond criticism. Farmers aren't sacrosanct simply because they provide for the country. Most jobs are vital for a functioning society.

You know full well that I have posted pro-farming posts before. I don't feel however, that just because I have a rural upbringing, went away to a private school etc that the expectation is that I will be conservative, right-wing and unable to consider different points of view. I obviously did not take Crocodileman's first post as seriously as you did, but I did try to consider "where he was coming from."

Seeding is what they do to clouds in Tasmania. Sowing or cropping when on a national register please Hoss. What part of the state are you from, if that's not to rude a question.

Have to disagree there. We could easily get rid of half the lawyers and public servants in this country without missing a beat. And no I'm not joking about getting rid of half the public servants, it could easily be done.

I laugh when I hear the term "sowing". In WA we call it seeding!! I'm from the central wheatbelt of WA. No use mentioning any major towns as no one will have heard of any of them other than Merredin . I was born in Kununoppin, near Bencubbin, Wyalkatchem, Mukinbudin and Nungarin. :)

Was an experience being over there. It was in the VFL days. Best thing was saying to Western Australian farmers "all the good footballers come from Victoria". Lot of fun.

10. Formally de-list the names of rural towns and postcodes to symbolise that they no longer exist. Any mail sent to these people/places can be promptly returned "No Such Postal Listing."

11. Start a new rabbit/fox/feral cat breeding program in these regions and attempt to breed locusts and release them in wheat belt areas just prior to harvest time!

PMSL. Are these places anywhere near Jagettarootlastnite and Wethhafakkawi? Won't say what they do with the sheep there.

Someone has to employ the unemployable. You either do that or pay them welfare. Either way we still pay, and it keeps 'em off the streets. Just like with union bosses - their members pay them to keep them off the streets. Just wish it worked.

12. Increase the GST to 20% in rural areas.

13. Force people in rural areas to listen to Slim Dusty records 24/7 - that should smoke 'em out!

14. Provide permits for farmers to burn off only in Summer, and only if temperatures are above 35 degrees and winds stronger than 40 knots!

15. Stop education in Government schools in Year 7 in country regions. Why waste money that can be spent on more deserving kids. Besides, Year 7 is two years more than most of them graduate from!
