Here are some good ideas for what i think the AFL should look into:
1. Have a replay of the Grand Final in the First Round of the competition. ie,. If Essendon play Carlton in the Grand Final this year then they will replay each other in Round 1 of the competition. And they should alway play each other on the Saturday of Round 1, just like the Grand Final is on a Saturday.
Obviously, if Collingwood plays Essendon in the Grand Final, the draw will have to be restructured so that Essendon can play Collingwood in both Round 1 replay and the ANZAC Day game.
The two sides competing in the Grand Final replay should be competing for the Barassi Cup.

2. Change the current format that the Brownlow Medal is awarded in (3, 2, 1 votes system).
The umpires should award players points based on how good the player plays.
A maximum of 5 points should be awarded, but the umpires dont necessearily have to give the best player 5 points.
Basically, the umpires can award as many players' votes' as they wish, and they rate them with a score out of 5 point for the game.

3. Reintroduce the State of Origin series. The Series should be played after the Grand Final and contested between all 6 states - NSW/ACT, Qld/NT, SA, Tas, Vic, WA. The should play in a round robin series and the 2 top states contest the Grand Final.
This would not be a totally lob-sided competition, Victoria, SA and WA would obviously go in as the favourites, but i think that the Tasmanian boys would give a few teams a bit of a scare. Obviously NSW and Qld would be vying for last spot.
The big problem for Tasmania, NSW/ACT and QLD/NT is depth. There is under 40 players from all of those 3 teams, so if there even a minor run of injuries those states would have very sub-standard players in the squad.
As i said, the competition would not be totally lob-sided just look at the squad of 30 i made out for each state:

Another Idea i thought of:

With all the talk about Clashing Guernseys lately i thought i would do some bitmap images of what i thought all the teams guernseys should be for home matches and away matches.
I posted these guersneys at http://www.bigfooty.com/users/afl/geurnseys/
I think these guerneseys look very good, i kept the pattern of the home side guernsey being dark and the away guersney being light coloured. This way there would never be a clashing geurnsey.
I thought in particular the Richmond away guernsey looked good.
I tried to keep the traditional guernseys as the home guernsey as match as i could, however the traditional Geelong, Kangaroos, Sydney and St Kilda guernsey went into the away column because they are prodominetely light coloured.

WCE2000 You have some good ideas in your logic.

What I noticed was there was absolutly no clash of jumpers.

there was either a light coloured jumper vs a dark coloured jumper in all possible match-ups.

Most of the Guernseys looked good some where shockers though.

point to keep in mind : the way you spelt GUERNSEY in your link was wrong and needs to be changed.

other than that I was impressed with your idea's : )

Which ones did you think looked shocking. I know the Brisbane Away jumper looked pretty average but i couldn't think of anything else.
And i know a lot of the supporters of traditional clubs wouldn't like the idea of changing the guernseys so drastically for away game like Carlton, Essendon, Melbourne, Bulldogs.

About the guernseys:
My favourite's were Richmond, Adelaide,Brisbane and Carlton.

I really hated the bulldogs, eagles, fremantles.

Essendons was also a beauty.

First of all, well done WCE2000, those designs weren't bad at all! I would have to agree with Richmondfan#1 about their's looking the best.

BUT, the Collingwood away guernsey is a complete dud. How about you make the logo bigger and make the black lines wider, otherwise it would look like the team is playing in Bonds Singlets.

Also, the Swans guernseys are quite boring. It needs a logo or something on them!

"Good Old Collingwood Forever"

As I said before I like your idea !

However Carltons 'white' guernsey would clash with the umpire's too much.

but most of your designs are pretty good (you should go to art school !)

Freo's are the real shockers but they are they only club with green as a colour why not try a few ideas to bring out the green more in an away strip ?

Perhaps you could send some idea's to the AFL so they can ponder about them ?

I rekon it should be compulsery for every team to have an away strip so that it is fair.

that way older teams like Essendon can keep their traditional strip but make a fairer competition ?

The reason why there is not alot of green in Fremantles Away Guernsey is because that would be a dark colour.
I am aware that no team in the competition has green in the jersey, however, i wanted to keep the pattern of Dark Home Guernsey and Light Away Guernsey.

I thought of a simple solution to the problem with umpires clashing with clubs.
The umpires would have several different shirts they could wear. They would keep their white shirts as much as possible, however if say for instance, Carlton played Collingwood at home. The umpires could were a yellow shirt. I dont think there is any time were the umpires would wear anything other than yellow or white.

The Bombers Training jumper is the same as that except for the two black vertical stripes but i Loved the Design and have no problems with the bomber wearing that one next year if it were taken up by the club, I will vote for away jumpers if the club brings it up at the AGM

i just realized that Essendon Away guernsey clashes with the Swans home guernsey, and to a lesser extent the St Kilda home guernsey.
So when Essendon play Sydney at the SCG both teams would wear their home guernseys as would both Essendon and St Kilda when St Kilda are the home team.

Also, the Bulldogs home guernseys clash with Kangaroos and Port Adelaides away guernseys. So When Bulldogs host Port Adelaide, both teams would compete in their home guernseys.
When the Bulldogs host Kangaroos, if the Roos also wear the home guernseys, the guernseys would still clash. So the Bulldogs would wear their away guernseys for this match. (basically its like swapping the guernseys away for this game - Bulldogs wear their away guesrnsey despit being at home, and Kangaroos wear their home guersney despite playing away).

The Kangaroos Hoem and Port Adelaide Away geurseys also clash, so both teams would were their home guersneys.

Just to make a formalite the following guernseys are the ones that clash (home team first)
St Kilda v Essendon (both teams wear home guernseys)
Sydney v Essendon (both teams wear home guernseys)
Bulldogs v Port Adelaide (both teams wear home guernseys)
Bulldogs v Kangaroos (Bulldogs wear away guernseys, Roos wear home guernseys)
Kangaroos v Port Adelaide (both teams wear home guernsey)

I LOVE the lack of ochre and sky blue!

Most of them are great WCE2000, but personally I've never been a fan of lots of yellow in a jumper, or white for that matter.

If the umps wear different colours, would the "White Maggot" chant have to change too?

Some interesting ideas WCE2000.

The replay of the grand final next year sounds like another compromise in an already compromised draw, I know it sounds a good idea but the draw needs serious rework before any extra pressure is brought upon it.

I think the brownlow voting system is a little unfair if you consider under the current ststem the 3 voter is essentialy 3 times as good as the 1 vote getter - hardly.

But I think you really bombed with bringing back the state of origin. It's a concept that just does not work anymore, the success of the game nationally has effectively killed off the origin series. The talent pool of players is much wider and while I applaud your efforts in naming teams from every state it's a concept the players do not respect or care for. More importantly the general public with their appetite satisfied with the home and away action have lost the desire to see origin footy.

You probably already know my views on alternate strips - they are an absolute neccessity and should be introduced immediately. Your designs are mostly pretty good except for a bit too much white, when designing alternate strips teams should not always get complicated with the designs but maybe try out completely different colours. Remember the idea is to stand out from your opponent on the day.

I hated the Essendon away strip. What is wrong with us keeping the same style, just reverse the colours to red with black sash so we don't clash.

Just have an alternate for the teams with an obvious clash

Hawks don't clash with any traditional jumpers and until last year, were allowed to wear brown shorts all the time.(as were sydney with red)

Unfortunalely som newer "alternate" tops conflict (WCE home and richmond ansett are examples)

Carlton, WCE, Melbourne, Essendon, Saints, Power and Crows are obvious 'dark' clashes.
Saints, Melbourne and Sydney with red and North v collingwood are the obvious ones

Incidentally - the premier league in the seventies had away strips when a clash came up on B&W TV. Even Newcastle (Collingwood style) and Leeds (all white) had to change when away. The favourite was for many teams to adopt brazils colours (yellow shirt, Light blue shors) as brazil were hot at that time

Perhaps the 'away' team couls adopt green and gold with club logos ?

Thats a valid point that State of Origin is dead Happy Hawker. But i reckon its worth giving it a shot AFTER the Grand Final, because clubs wouldn't be so worried, if some of their star players played in it then, because it would give them time to get over those injuries.
And its also quite valid how you said that its another compromise in an already compromised draw with the GF replay in Round 1. But I'm sure the people that work out the draw, who do a very good job, i fell, would be able to work out how to do it.

Nevermind, they all work in IE (was using Nutscrape before).

I reckon Essendon and Richmond aways would works better just as the reverse patterns. Other than that though I like em a lot.

The reverse Carlton and Sydney ones look good and I really like the second North jumper a lot; much better than orange
