Autopsy Some promising signs but Hawks too good

It's a long season so 1 loss doesn't mean we're done, due to loose first game. Our A graders were ok without being at their best so we'll play better at some point. Can't stand the thought of Hawthorn winning more flags before we get another but they were easily the better side tonight.

Negatives
  • I was hoping to see signs of improvement in some areas though, still too much of the same red flags. Some horrible, Tackling, Not only lost clearances but far too many easy walkout clearances for them and a defence that gifts away silly, silly goals that hurt. Plus the massive inconsistency qtr to qtr.
  • Early but Co Warner and Sheldrick didn't inspire. Honestly don't know if I see what others see in Sheldrick, hope he becomes a gun though...can't afford anymore 1st round busts.
  • Campbell is disappointing, how many opportunities do you need? He gotten so much more than most based on actual output.
  • Rampe, Adams & Lloyd look old and won't be part of a premiership side unfortunately.
  • Don't know what the hell the deal was with our 2nd ruck but it caught out and cost us a few times when mids were doing it.
  • The 'not 15' rule was a ****ing farce tonight, how many easy 20+m kicks did they ping us on.

Positives
  • Wicks looks decent in defence.
  • Jordon was pretty good and Roberts bar a couple horrible moments continued on from last year.
  • 3rd qtr showed how we can play (until that unforgivable defence effort that left Nash free), hopefully we can find some ****ing consistency to bring that effort for longer.

It's only Cox's first game so sure he'll have learnt a bit. A fair but to do, especially in clearances with Brisbane and Freo to come...we somehow need to pinch one of those or we we be in trouble early.
It's not a performance that inspired confidence but not so much of a complete train wreck that makes me think we're in trouble (provided we get 1 of these next 2).

Where did our handball receives go? Change of angles? Too many players stationary. Even when blakey ran, no one really shepherded for him or provided a genuine option to receive the ball. Expect to run the entire ground.

Too few carried the burden tonight. Need a collective effort.

I think "some promising signs" sums it up well JackHiscoxWasFast.

It's far easier to name our worst 5 than our best 5 tonight, yet we were still right in the game until halfway through the last against a team some had as the Premiership favourite.

I still don't rate the Hawks as highly as most others, and I think a better side would have put the game to bed a lot earlier. But the fact that we were really quite poor for 3/4 quarters and most of our big names had quiet games and a bunch of our players had stinkers, yet we were still in it until the last 10 minutes is probably a good sign overall.
I could count at least half a dozen of our players who were poor, all of our small forwards apart from Moore who was just ok had minimal impact so not quite sure where the better team would put the game to bed earlier is coming from. If we can win a game on the road with a few players having stinkers that's a good sign isn't it? We lost Worpel at HT as well. This is going to sound cocky and arrogant and will be my one and only post here but we probably should have won by more if we had a forward structure that could have capitalised on the general dominance we had across the game. No Lewis or Dear or Gunston. Yes you had no McDonald and McLean but you still had Amartey Macartin etc. Anyway good luck the rest of the year, your mods can ban me if they like.

Come on mate, we all know the first game is exactly how everyone plays for the rest of the year. Nothing ever gets better. You need to drop half the team whenever you lose and replace them with all the AAs you've got running around in reserves.

Would be more interested to hear what you saw and what went wrong/right iyo

It is the first game. You pile in on guys like you have played at the highest level and know better.
Each to their own.
Hawthorn played well. We will need to get better all across the park.
Savage criticism of some players is your norm. Sack all of them then.

You have been around for a long while. But you still feel the need to stick the boot in.

If that is what makes you happy.

Absolute bullshit
Feel free to just put me on ignore then if that's the case. Really don't give a ****, i'll do it on my end so you can save the crap
for someone else .

Ignore is the coward's game. You miss new threads and conversations become disjointed. People could just try being a bit less precious about differences of opinion.

Just wanted to put it out there that Grundy still had 13 HTAs which was more than Meek and Chol combined. Therefore showing to me that the midfielders didn't turn up if he beat them in the HOs and HTAs.

Having said that Grundy got pumped by Meek around the ground and late in Qtrs

Chad and Heenz did

Amartey stood up early and wanted it

Heeney was awsome except for when he copped a fist to the head , then thought he was literally held too much

You know the rules mate . Everything is great, the club never puts a foot wrong, the players are perfect, it’s just bad luck. Your not a supporter if u think otherwise

Picked plenty of positives anyway

Heeney did too much arm waving when the whistles went imo

You're right. It does. **** off.
Probably excessively harsh sorry. Just not really interested in hearing about how great Hawthorn is from a Hawks fan on the Swans board's review of the game.

Mills, Gulden and Cunningham were also far bigger outs for us than those you listed.
