UPDATED FOR 2024

Obviously you can make your own decisions on how testing translates to ball in hand, playing football - but the clubs seem to find it useful.
These are ones I have sources for, and will try to add more as I locate them. Apparently under 3 seconds is considered elite speed, but I don't know whether that is in respect to AFL footballers, or the whole population.

I am putting together a few physical testing results for current and ex- Crows players as a resource. Starting with 20m sprints, as I got interested in this when looking up Dean Gore's today.

You should put a date next to the time if available.

So how does Dangerfield look so quick or is he particularly quick over the first couple of meters?
I'd like to see Charlie's numbers.
And Ottens time must be very old before ACLs

Would be genuinely interested in Thommo's 20 m sprint.

Can't believe M Crouch is slower than Jakey boy!

in testing the only thing in the player's mind is RUN FAST, on the field there are (or should be) plenty of other things to consider too.

a Rory Laird is probably concentrating on where he's got options long, where he's got options short, where is the pressure from the opposition coming from, etc hence the composure.

Danger is probably thinking I'm fast, I'm powerful, I'm outta here - hence at times the poor disposal.

just my theory - when I've played in the past I'd burn our whole team in the sprints and rundown tackle anyone without a 10m headstart (low grades of course lol), but I probably lead the side for holding the ball against

Players also need the mindset to use their pace. As someone else mentioned, it's rare to get a clear run without a sidestep from congestion, so players need good spacial awareness, lateral movement and clean ball handling to be able to use their pace. No good getting on your bike if you're going to fumble the ball under pressure, run straight into opponents or not be aware that you're getting collected by someone coming from your 4 o'clock. Standing in a line with a stop watch running 20m after a gun goes off bears little resemblance to whether a midfielder is fast or not. With an outside player it's a bit different.
Sam Mitchell who's known to be slow arched his back a couple of times last Friday night and escaped tacklers that I didn't think he'd escape and broke through a line that he wouldn't be expected to break. He might be play slow, preferring to utilise vision and sideways movement to find time for himself, but that doesn't mean he can't run a quick 20m when lined up in a row.

That's just made me even more depressed about how Shaw's career turned out.

I hope that Otten's 20m sprint time is pre-ACL's otherwise he's currently faster than Menzel

Obviously agility and lateral movement aren't related as I've never seen van Berlo do a side step

the trick is that everything is so tight-lipped these days

Interesting looking at those 20 metre sprint times, some of those players with good times don't play quick
