This is a medal players would actually want to win and take pride in winning it. sounds like a great idea :thumbsu:
As something a little different, I would love to see a medal cast for each of the 22 on both sides, presented post-match. Because JMac was never the star, but the best he could be, then rewarding the "best" on ground sort of goes against the grain.

And maybe into the future, anyone playing their first JMac tribute match gets a medal as well?

Just a thought.

Given he grew up in vic, it's probably more appropriate (and likely) that a tribute match would take place in Melbourne.
I like the idea of the McCarthy medal, but make it something different than BOG so it's something that all players can strive for without being limited by age/natural ability. E.g. best team man, most courageous, or have it something specifically about JMac, e.g. best under 23

I think it's great that so many people want to help in anyway possible way.

I have messaged the club contact again and he'll be intouch soon. I know some of you like the TSW know players and obviously are doing your independent thing and that's great.

If you are happy to wait I'll let you know what the club does. They obviously need to time to process everything and will inform what people can do. Once we know their plans we can decide if we want to do our own bigfooty donation or just go through their channels.

Keep up the great work, if his family and friends saw the positivity they would be overwhelmed by the kindness being spoken on this forum.

Would be great if people could continue to build what we started last night at the club.

It is starting to be posted around by the media, was on Sunrise this morning aswell as Triple M and a few other media outlets, I'm sure it would be a great sign of support of the McCarthy Family.

You can get a big thing of tealight candles from any cheap store, or even KMart/BigW. Would be great if people could continue the flames.

How about the AFL enabling us to have an extra rookie spot and we make that available to a player from the Mornington Peninsula should one not get picked up in the draft in the next few years and is happy to be a rookie with us?
The other issue is, and I'm not entering ito speculation or speaking ill of the departed, but I think Chadwick Cornes' post on page 2 is worth consideration and will play a part in how the club, the players and the AFL remember John

Poor man, so very sad in every respect

Im going to head down the club soon and have a meal and pay my respects, the saddest part is that where TSW and others have placed their tribute is mere meters from where I saw JMac in person for the first time just 2 weeks ago on the Monday after the Brisbane game.

It has become glaringly obvious to me that when you follow a club and devote yourself to following the club as much as we all on here do, we follow the players, we welcome them, we emotionally invest in them, we will them to succeed. It is because of this reason what has happened has hit me in a direct emotional way.

JMac was one of ours, he was a part of Port Adelaide, we wanted him to succeed, we wanted him to be part of our success. When he joined us he became a part of our long history and now he is gone he will forever be remembered by a club and its supporters that value the contributions of all players who devote themselves to our cause. JMac did that in spades.

I no longer see myself as a supporter of the PAFC but an extended family member because a mere supporter wouldn't feel like I do today.

We are Port Adelaide - this rings so true to me today, days ago it was just a slogan.
