The real point is that these are far from ordinary football conditions, and very far from ordinary for a WA side. I’m not taking anything away from the Suns, they have played the conditions far better.

They’ve knocked off 3 top 8 teams this season and are in the mix for Finals this year. Promising signs from this young squad.

Clarko sure to go to GWS now that Dew seems safe at the Suns. Buckley probably has his hands full with that flog Lumumba to consider getting back into coaching at the moment, although he would be wise to consider Port's offer when they finally come to their senses and give Hinkley the arse

Although your statement is true, it probably sounds a little better if you point out that we've knocked off 3 of the current top 5 and only lost to Melbourne by 2 kicks. Brisbane are the only current top 5 team to do a number on us this season.
Our draw has been really tough to date having to play all of the top 6 teams in our opening 9 rounds but the positive that comes with a draw like that is everything really starts to open up from here and we just needed to secure enough wins to stay in the discussion, which I think we have as of today. Our next 6 opponents are all placed outside the top 8 so the opportunity is absolutely there for us to climb the ladder.

Probably underselling their performance a bit. Casboult/Chol combined for 39 goals in 2022 and only two other tall forward combinations have bettered them this season - Hawkins/Cameron (52) & Curnow/McKay (47). We know McKay is out for at least a few weeks so Gold Coast's tall forward combination could conceivably become the second most potent in the league at some point over the next month.
What's most surprising is both players appear to be having career years at the Suns. Prior to 2022 Chol had never kicked more than 9 goals in a single season and now he's already got 19 goals in 9 games for the Gold Coast. Casboult once kicked 34 goals over 22 games in 2017 but he's on track to kick 50 odd this season with 20 in his first 9 for the Suns. Both have kicked at least 1 goal in every game this season so this has become a ridiculously potent and consistent tall forward combination in a year which they seemed to have very little preseason training together after Ben King got hurt in February.
Impressive stuff. They deserve more credit.

Casboults performance has been especially incredible.
I havent watched their games but is it his kicking accuracy or just getting many more shots than he ever got at the Blues?

Nice win today. The competition is better for Gold Coast being competitive, hope they can continue to build.
They've played the top 6 sides and managed to beat 3rd, 4th and 5th. Very solid.
They're also 1-2 against bottom 8 sides. Next step is to mature as a team and win the games they're expected to win.

They rank highly for inside 50's, Witts does a huge share of the ruck work, Casboult pretty much gets asked to plonk under high balls and Chol gets a bit more free reign with short stints on ball to get involved in the game. Neither of them get asked to do too much defensively nor to really roam up the ground and get involved in too much linking play.
If you were designing the perfect roles for these 2 guys they'd pretty much be in them.
Chol was stuck behind Lynch and Riewoldt at Richmond, or at other times asked to ruck a fair amount. Casboult was rarely plan A at Carlton, and if he was either they couldn't kick it to him or he couldn't kick it between the big sticks.
My biggest question with the Suns right now is:
Does their game plan stack up on big grounds and in good conditions or are they really benefitting from slipper conditions or small grounds that favour their contested ball style and stop them getting exploited in space.
They were tougher in close and far cleaner in the wet than Freo today. But it's at home where they know the dimensions and they're use to wet/slipper conditions too.

Suns were hard at it yesterday, we will be sore after that hit out. They need to keep bringing that mongrel at the contest and in defence and they can play finals.
I hope the umps recognise the Collins effort in the votes, Freo had 30 more I50s and he took more marks down there than our whole team.
