Yeah I know water under the bridge and all that... BUT:

2006 National Draft:

Pick 31: Clayton Collard (Frem)
Pick 32: Kurt Tippett (Adel)

WTF were Connolly / Smart thinking??? :thumbsd:

And just to take it a little further:

33 Jarryd Morton (Haw)
36 Alwyn Davey (Ess)
39 Nathan Krakouer (Port)
44 Brad Dick (Coll)
61 Josh Hill (WB)

I know, I know - drafting is a lottery, but FFS Collard over Tippett??? Give me a ****ing break. :(

Ouch.

Well I can kinda see where CC would've been coming from, Murphy had just had his best year, we'd traded for Tarrant and Pav was firing. Plus there was Campbell waiting in the wings.

At the previous draft we picked up Drum and Warnock. Murphy had a great season, Longmuir was still on the list, Campbell had been developing for 3 years and we just traded for Tarrant.

Who would have thought Drum would do nothing, Warnock would leave, Murphy would become what he has, Campbell would do nothing, Longmuir's knee was career ending and Tarrant would become a defender?

You can see why we didn't take Tippett....but looking back it doesn't look great.

You're right Chris. But surely, an extremely shy, flaky small forward with known personality deficiencies would have to be of less value to any football club, than a young tall with potential at any time. How much better would we look if we had Taz and Elvis down back, and Tippett and Pav up forward.

Aaahhhh well. :(

While I do understand why we didn't draft Tippett, the selection of Collard is a bit odd. Given the characteristics that you mentioned.

Oh well, you live and you learn. And it looks like we have learnt in regards to our recruiting.

Clayton Collard was a really good footballer - you only had to look at the season he had in the WAFL leading up to that draft to know he had potential in spades.

None of us could see the fact that he was so shy from where we sit. What suprises me is that no one from our Recruiting staff, who one would presume would go and talk to him, interview him at Draft Camp, identified him as having a deficieny of this sort.

I think they screwed that draft up as soon as they decided to trade - Murphy had just had a good year as a FF. It was our midfield that let us down - what were they thinking? And the thing is, we would have still had Polak and Medhurst, who might have come good or might not have, but at least been there to keep pressure on the guys in the middle.

Tippett was is from NSW or Queensland no? pretty sure we don't have many scouts or anyting over there.

As for the need for antoher tall, that's a fair assesment and all but then to go small and overlook Davey, whom with the same alone should have had our eyes open is just unforgivable.

There is no way we could have gone for Dick seeing as we had (maybe not yet though) Head on our team. No need to tell you why.

And to let Hill go, ouch

Probably being a little harsh on the recruiters, Collard was a very likely talent who I think at the time was regarded as a potential first or second rounder. It obviously looks very bad now, but who was to know that a tall, athletic basketballer, who hadn't played alot of football would develop into what he has. (You may see some similarities in a young basketballer that we traded in this year though, coincidence, perhaps not!)

Clayton Collard has more talent than 3 Tippets put together. However, the club obviously didn't know about his stinky attitude. Along with Sampi as one of the biggest wasted talent of recent times.

That's a pretty big call. I must admit I know very little about Collard, can someone fill me in about his story? I see he's now on Richmond's list but hasn't got a game yet...

Well, he's one of those players that have talents for sale but are either disinterested or bad characters. We already had one before him in Dion Woods, the only difference being that Woods was just disinterested and saw footy as occasional fun and not occupation and he lasted bit longer than Collard.
Anyone who was watching Collard at South Freo before he got drafted would say the same thing. I remember him scoring some absolutely freakish goals ala Motlop. After CC gave him a debut for Freo, he scored a goal in that game and was dropped [for no reason really] and spat a dummy, the rest is history.
It must have been something big because he was delisted after only one year.

Ahh yes, talented but poor attitude. Sounds like our old Angwin.

I wonder why he's having trouble breaking into Richmond's team? Might have rubbed some people the wrong way? I might look at how he's going in the VFL.
Pretty sure he got delisted by Richmond off their rookie list.

Without trying to sound like too much of a smartarse, there were plenty on here who were absolutely rapt to get Collard and thought he'd have a big future based on his record for souths - me included.

These things always look worse in hindsight.

He's an arrogant little shit who thinks his shit doesn't stink.

ah well i can see tippet going back to the gold coast in 2011 anyway, dont think it would have mattered what club he was at. Unless I am unaware, i cant recall any contracts binding him past 2011.

Wisbey's shortened profiles on Collard, Tippett, Dick and Krak (all in the 'will at least be good' category:

COLLARD, Clayton (31 Fremantle) [13]

Highly skilled midfielder/ flanker. Painfully shy and naive about the workload required for AFL so will need quality mentoring but definitely has AFL ability. Query re ability to adapt so is some risk but he has big upside, class and some X-factor. Other main selling points are X-factor, smarts / vision, clean hands, evasion, balance, overhead. Trademarks are (1) Vacuum the ball off the carpet on the run, take on and perhaps make a fool of the oncoming opponent, then dob a nice goal or set a team mate up to do so, (2) Screamer. He might lose concentration before getting to the last page of the team's play book but, for every hair he might make you tear out, he'll give you a moment where you will feel smug that he is on your list. Has mainly played outside roles (HFF) but I am confident he will furnish into an inside mid option in time if/when he can get his endurance up enough. I compare him in style somewhat to Tyson Edwards but I also think he will be able (in time) to play all the roles that Tyson has played. Has always lived in the shadow, on and off-field, of his best mate, Jetta, It's often "Jetta, the star footballer, and his mate Collard". If both play AFL and get the most out of themselves, I believe Jetta will be the better player but with Collard probably not far behind. There seems a tendency in recruiting circles to talk as if Jetta is Collard's better performed younger brother. However Collard was the better performed in WAFL Seniors, was also named in '06 WA Seniors (!) state squad, and Jetta is actually 5 months older. On sheer ability, I rate Collard's AFL potential as "Definite" and only one aspect made me downgrade him to "Likely", viz "How well and quickly is he likely to settle in and feel like he belongs?". My only other significantly concern is the O.P. he has been battling. His DC weight was listed as 86kg but his fighting weight would currently be around 80kg. He "couldn't" (?) keep himself in good condition while suffering O.P. late season. Career-wise, Collard and Jetta getting split up into different states may be the best thing for both boys. Clayton can stop living in Leroy's shadow and that will be a watershed point in his development. I would definitely have been prepared to draft him with a pick around my ranking if necessary (not that it ever would have been). Assuming he settles in reasonably OK (!!), I am confident Collard will make as big a splash as most of this draft's first rounders, perhaps ready to debut in '07.

TIPPETT, Kurt (32 Adelaide) [12]

Versatile, mobile newby ruck/KP. Works hard. No very major fault. 19yo but big upside. I'm generally sceptical about kids who are in their first year of footy. That's because such kids usually show only tiny snippets that excite you. I'm far less willing than many are to extrapolate from such little data, no matter how impressed I may have been with the kid's snippets. With Tippett, he has shown a lot, not just random cameos. I think he has terrific potential. What really impresses me is the amount of footy smarts he already has, albeit that he is still in the early stages of the learning curve. Although still raw, I doubt anyone who knew nothing about him would realise when they first saw him play that he was new to footy. 201cm types who are likely to be able to play any KP or ruck, have the pace of a quite quick midfielder, are physically virtually plug 'n play, can leap over tall buildings, can get their own ball, are at least competitive overhead, have a sharp brain and have the ethics/intensity of an inside mid don't grow on trees. Many of the things I like about Tippett would be good in any player but I could add "especially for 201cm" to a lot of my comments. I am rating him as a ruck who can play KP but I would be almost as confident rating him as a KPP who can ruck. I rate him "definite" AFL, despite being a newby.

DICK, Brad (44 Collingwod) [24]

Enigmatic but magical when en song. Risky ranking but huge upside

KRAKOUER, Nathan (39 Port Adelaide) [48]

Lightning. Great user, smarts. If 75kg, serious AFL and would be in my top category. 61kg the only worry but a huge one. He will literally have to create history (re the modern era) as his BMI represents easily the skinniest build on record. His diet opportunities will be better now and that's the big hope.

There is no way Collard is "painfully shy". From what I've seen/heard he is the complete opposite. Or maybe they are saying he is shy about the workload required for AFL level? I think a majority of kids coming through are naive about that though. Before I went to Freo training a few years ago and saw what they actually go through I thought they just got paid big bucks to play every weekend.

It seems to me with Collard there is nothing the club could have done. It seems they really did draft the best available with that pick. Does anyone know what Collard's doing now?
