I'll get slaughtered here by the swingers.
But sometimes it has to be said;

Unless he is one of the best small forwards ever, Eddie Betts will not get 5 goals and 15 possesions in a match. You gotta laugh that the one game he will get such high numbers, was against us. It speaks volumes and yet says nothing. It shows that we don't have good small defenders to compliment our KPDs. It says nothing because the whole match was an abberation.
Mitch Robinson looks a good prospect, but he'll have a lot of games where he isn't too effective or even much good - every player does in their first few year. He made us look silly at times. Speaks volumes that a first gamer can have a harder intensity than us. It says nothing because the whole match was an abberation. Plenty of examples of both Carlton playing well well well above themselves, and plenty of examples of Richmond playing well below themselves. A lot of that has to be credited to Carlton, and they proved a lot of Richmond fans wrong last night. But if the 15-odd players that usually play better lifted to match the 5 or so that played around their average mark, then the game would have been completely different. Slag off all the players you want, but come next week it will be forgotten. I'm not saying we're gonna come out next week and win, cos' we probably won't. But gt a grip on things - think of the game as another abberation like the Adelaide debacle last year. We came out the next week I think to beat Hawthorn. That shut the swingers up...
Sometimes you just gotta' laugh. Eveything that could go wrong did go wrong for us; everything that could go right did go right for Carlton. Hopefully we've used up our unluckiness and only have lucky tickets left for a while.

Getting smashed by the opposition's small forward has been a recurring theme of the last few years. How can you not realise that?

As for your expectation we should bounce back, what happened last year after the first time we got flogged by Adelaide? We got flogged by the swans, so don't expect anything short of the same. We are a rabble of a club.

I'm with you on that! Cartoon players that never do anything finally did - all on the same night. Eddie Betts - Wiggens :eek: Robinson :eek::eek:

We played bad - they played above their best -simple. I would like to see that lot do that again - not sure it will happen in my lifetime.

I knew you'd be first to reply, Beav.
I know that we have a class small-defender shortage, but Newman is pretty high up there with the best of them, and we have plenty who have the potential to go down there and try it out (Tambling, Polo etc) and should be able to handle most small forwards. Yesterday was an abberation. Pure and simple.

wanted:

a small defender who can negate the opposition smalls.

Unfortunately Newman cant hold anyone, edwards is far too loose and McMahon is worse.

I've noticed even last season that Thursfield and McGuane would rotate onto small fwds as well , FFS in the last quarter we had Schulz on Garlett. Is that a joke? I found that completely embarrassing that Wallace could get outcoached with a missmatch like that.

I know King butchers it and has brain explosions but at least get the matchups right, against teams with extremely small nippy fwds like betts, rioli, thompson(port), rodan, thomas, etc etc bring in King with express orders to man up first and foremost and dont worry about creating run and overlap, that is secondary.

anyone else capable of filling the void? connors perhaps? he has flair and mongrel and has looked good off halfback in the past. someone please stand up so we can then at least get the matchups right with the 3 talls and newman on the worst fwd if hes going to be the release player

Now, now, there's no need for that. :)

Geez get yourself to a shrink ASAP, this is a bonofide case of denial right here. We have been slaughtered by small forwards for yonks. Newman is very loose and often leaks goals.

we need to go man on man not a zone. stay on your opponent while the opposition have the ball, then when we have it run as hard as you can to recieve the ball and set us up for a goal.

We have problems with them, but being the nature of the beast, small forwards only rarely tend to gun it like Betts did. Outside of Betts' game and Milne's game (I'm excluding C Jones, as he is hardly a "small" forward), give some examples of us being killed...
It isn't a strong point, but it, like usual, isn't as bad as you paint.

Medurst, Rioli, S.Johnson, Gamble, Milne, Betts, B.Johnson, Buchanan, M.Campbell, Porplyzia to name a few.

Now lets not get silly - Medhurst played well against us, IIRC, while playing on McGuane. He is a medium forward, not a small forward. Same with B Johnson and Gamble. Rioli really didn't kill us - he got 2 goals I think, and it was super impressive because he was a first year player. Not super impressive for AFL standards. S Johnson will kill anyone on his game. He hasn't really smashed us in a game that we weren't going to get smashed in anyway. When did Campbell and Porplyzia smash us?
So S Johnson, Betts and Milne, and Medhurst to an extent, although he was playing on a tall, have smashed us in recent times. Not as bad as you make out to be. I'll give it to ya, we do need a class small defender to take some of those players, or even an accountable one, but it isn't that bad.

Yeah, against us.

Add Ebert, Motlop, Didak, O'Keefe and Thompson to Beav's list.
Yeah, cos' we're going to put our good small defender on the likes of Ebert, Motlop, O'Keefe and Thompson. We played a small defender on Corey Jones and he got 7 in a quarter. And when since has Didak killed us?

That's hardly killing. Mitch Robinson kicked three against us last night and didn't kill us. Sydney and Adelaide both flogged us, so no matter who was on Porp and Buchanan would have conceded some goals, and, come to think of it, so did North. Take that as a correlation, either we shut down the small forwards and we go close to winning the game or we get flogged out of the middle, and the small opportunists, having so many more opportunities, will kick more goals.

Seriously, 3 goals from a small forward is a smashing. They generally only get about 10 possies and mostly are concentrated on locking the ball inside the forward 50. Sneaking 3 goals is a huge benefit for any side. If they averaged 3 goals they would have 66 for a season.

If you're not a KPD or third tall you're a 'small' defender.

None of the forwards I mentioned are over 185cm besides ROK who is 188cm and certainly not a KPF, Ebert is 179cm.

And when since has Didak killed us?
He had so little pressure on him in our game last year he was able to rack up 23 kicks and cut us to pieces.
