Judging by the YouTube comments on this playlist some people unironically think music peaked in the 80's.

Laughs in Portugal. The Man
I genuinely think people that believe this are too daunted by the overwhelming accessibility of music in the modern day to go and find something they like. Even outside of the mainstream and indie, you have music that will cater to everyone that enjoys music on Bandcamp, or radios/playlists on Spotify and Google Play. I do it every week and continue to be staggered by the depth and variety of fantastic Queensland and Australian music that gets released. The thought of trying to stay up-to-date with great international music spooks me. It's embarrassing to watch old people complain about music, and even more embarrassing to watch younger people do it.

It's not the ones who think it peaked in the 80s that annoy me, it's the one who thinks it ended in the 80s.

So true mate.

I can go on a Google Play/Spotify "songs for you" binge every day and find 2-3 new artists I like without even trying really. It's just fantastic.

For what it's worth, I try to listen to a few 'classic' or 'cult classic' albums every week, and have a list where I document them (never really considered why - I have no intentions of ever doing anything with it, it's just a hobby really). Not sure if it's a commentary on music in the 80s or the music I've gravitated towards, but the 80s are my most underrepresented decade, and I wouldn't pin it down to the saturation of pop, because I probably enjoy pop more consistently than rock.

Likely cognitive dissonance, however, in today's musical climate there are unprecedented numbers of recording artists with music available to the public but the percentage of those who span beyond a few releases is quite low. Quite a large number of earworms are produced, but their longevity is limited, and many consumers seem happy with this cycle that musical distributors have produced.

Just over 3/4 of the votes counted, with 5 left and we have a new leader. The song leading earlier has dropped to third place and the current leader has taken a bit of a lead.

- Early billy leader has been over taken by a song now on 6 billies
- Every song has recieved at least a vote.

Santana is amazing and got my 5.

Absolute unheralded GUN
I love my guitar based music, but something about the music those guitar guys (Vai, Satriani, Santana, Beck, et al) produce I don't really favour. I like a good guitar solo, but I think it's the excessive guitar wankery that gets me.

I get more stuff going through "Similar Artists" than the discover tab.
The similar artists section is a gem. Sometimes you get some howlers (I remember seeing Have A Nice Life come-up as a suggestion for Viper - probably a 4chan thing), but usually it's pretty accurate and you'll find a handful of quality artists.

I've always thought the term "guitar w...ery" is a weird one. Virtuoso musicians who play other instruments never cop negative terms like that. Why is it that only highly skilled electric guitar players like Vai, Malmsteen, Satriani, Becker and co. get the label and not guys like Paco Pena or Al Di Meola?

People get worked up about Claude Hay's home made guitar/bass.
