I was thinking similar as I was typing that post too. Why do I dislike guitar soloists more than say featured solo instruments in an orchestra? The reason I can think of is a preconception of what (rock) guitar music should be, and that the guitar ******y stands above the supporting instrument mix, rather than enhancing it. This being especially true when there is a vocalist involved, sometimes the guitar ******y feels like it interrupts, rather than adds.
Thinking of an example, Santana's Smooth; the song was fairly popular on release, however I feel Santana's guitar work could largely be removed from the song, and it would still retain the same catchiness and popularity. Conversely, Ash's On a Wave (less popular, but first thing that came to mind); if you removed Tim Wheeler's guitar is pretty much rhythm until a solo, so the non-******y guitar throughout the verses and chorus could not be removed without basically destroying the song. The ******y in the solo adds to the tune, but quickly falls back into the mix when the vocals return.
