Listening now, I'll probably be using most of the time that's left.
Oh ffs  now Back One Out is going to come in and gloat about how the fact he wasn't in this round made no difference and votes were still not released early.

This is the longest I have ever spent ruminating over votes
It was a hard list to make up my mind about, for all the wrong reasons (I struggled to find 5 songs to vote for, but got there after about the 5th re-listen of my shortlist)

I've always thought the term "guitar w...ery" is a weird one. Virtuoso musicians who play other instruments never cop negative terms like that. Why is it that only highly skilled electric guitar players like Vai, Malmsteen, Satriani, Becker and co. get the label and not guys like Paco Pena or Al Di Meola?
I was thinking similar as I was typing that post too. Why do I dislike guitar soloists more than say featured solo instruments in an orchestra? The reason I can think of is a preconception of what (rock) guitar music should be, and that the guitar wankery stands above the supporting instrument mix, rather than enhancing it. This being especially true when there is a vocalist involved, sometimes the guitar wankery feels like it interrupts, rather than adds.

Thinking of an example, Santana's Smooth; the song was fairly popular on release, however I feel Santana's guitar work could largely be removed from the song, and it would still retain the same catchiness and popularity. Conversely, Ash's On a Wave (less popular, but first thing that came to mind); if you removed Tim Wheeler's guitar is pretty much rhythm until a solo, so the non-wankery guitar throughout the verses and chorus could not be removed without basically destroying the song. The wankery in the solo adds to the tune, but quickly falls back into the mix when the vocals return.

What's your favourite guitar solo?
Putting me on the spot. If I wanted to be dickhead I'd say Cliff Burton in Metallica's Orion. But first one that comes to mind is the aforementioned Tim Wheeler solo in Ash's On a Wave, and Ruud Jolie's work in Within Temptation - Covered By Roses.
