Retiring Sonny Sets

I knew he was done when I overheard him at the South Freo/Peel game earlier in the season say to someone that "my knee is ****ed". I was hoping we would be able to get him a farewell game but alas it doesn't look like that will be.

He will rightly go down as a great of the club and he deserves all the recognition that will come his way.

Damn was not expecting this. I know he had some injury setbacks but thought he would be a chance to play finals?

His knee apparently blew up like a balloon after the peel game. It’s just not worth it, needs to think about life post his career. I think also now that Dudley has found a spot in the lineup Walters probably didn’t want to be the guy dumping him if we make finals.

Ngl, a lil tear escaped while reading that. One of my all time favourites and while I would’ve liked it more if he finished his career as a Freo premiership player, I’m glad he at least won a WAFL premiership with the Black Ducks.
Hope the club retains him in a development role, we need more players with foot skills like his.

one of the most talented to pull on the purple & will certainly be in a current best ever Freo team.
But also one of the most influential, for all players.
I felt bad when I dobbed him in for coming late to a family day,(he came down from the hospital end putting his keys in his pocket as he joined our group, late) - for point of reference, Junior was little & he turns 25 next week.
Next thing Son Son is sent back to Swans.
I feel like a heel.
Michael returns as the superstar we know.
I'm not taking credit for his wonderful career, but with a few drinks & among mates, of course I will.
Thank you Mr Walters.
I have so much enjoyed your work.

Always up for a smile, photo and autograph. My son proudly wears his signed jumper every chance he can get.

The awe that the other young players had for him was obvious. I'm devastated that he won't get another game, I'd just assumed he would be back.

Still a fantastic career. How he has only one All Australian is beyond a joke btw - almost as bad as McPharlin.

Was really hoping to give him a standing ovation when he came onto the field as sub later in the season but not to be unfortunately.

We will still get to give him the standing ovation Michael so richly deserves at either our next Home game or the one after that.

Really thought he was gonna have a mini resurgence playing alongisde Bolton. Looked good in the pre season too. Crazy how what was initially a minor knee complaint has ended up snowballing to the end of his career. Sucks so much that he won't get a farewell either.

I was off him for a bit when he was ducking all the time , some others where I thought he was too slow but he ended up having a solid enough finish too an amazing first 3/4 of his career

Hope you end up back at the club in some capacity one day Sonny

I always thought he was hugely underrated by the wider footy public too. It wasn’t just 2019, he had a number of years leading up to that that were very good but just missed out on AA or had some injuries.

This is so sad and I can't believe we didn't get a single game of the Sonny & Bolton showWalters deserves so much more than his career to end in this way but I guess that's life isn't it.

I hope he has an amazing retirement and I hope the club nabs him as some kind of development coach because he is an amazing leader and clearly a very good teacher.

Please footy gods do not let Fyfe go out in this same manner too, that would be too much for my purple heart to take

Remember that month of footy when he kicked goals or points to win us games either after or very close to the siren. I think it was 3 out of 4 games he was the match winner.

I checked - it was a point after the siren vs Brisbane in Rd 10 2019. A goal with 30 secs to go against the Pies the following week. The bye, then he kicked 6 against Port Adelaide but we won by 21 points. We were losing by 1 point at 3/4 time and Walters kicked 2 of the only 3 goals in the last.

I'm gutted you didn't play for us again this year Sonny, but I'm so bloody happy you got to run out with your indigenous brothers earlier in the year. A fitting final game for an incredible indigenous leader and champion!
