The Office Crying GIF

Man what a tear jerker...

2008 State game. Me and @CameronK sitting the stands at Subi wanting to find out what all the fuss was about with Nic Nat and Daniel Rich.

They were beige that day, long and great careers notwithstanding.

We both came away raving about two kids.
Stephen Hill who just looked silky down the wing. And this tiny skinny kid, who just seems to be in all the right spots. He was kicking them up front and flashing through the midfield and his kicking off the left was awesome.

Michael Walters.

Thought he might be a bit small, and later would prove to lack some dedication. But that level of talent rises to the top. And I knew we shouldn’t throw it away, if we could get his head in the game we’d have something special.

Ross made the call, but it was really Sonny that made it. He took the kick in the pants, turned himself into a man to be admired and allow that talent to shine.

Good on you pal. You’re a bloody legend in my eyes. Takes a special person to improve yourself like that, to do it for your family and club.and you should be proud. So, so proud.

Well said Lach

SonSon went to my highschool. It's a bit different to Geelong Grammar or Wesley or wherever really and the streets of Midvale have many tough backyards along them.

As much as anything, SonSon is all about the open, egalitarian nature of our great game. For the tall, the short, the wiry, the boofy, the rich, the poor, the black, the white, the bullwog, the Sudanese refugee - there's a spot for you if you give yourself over; if you commit to run and to play for your mates.

Thanks to worsemim, I have this hilarious bit of football goodness to share. The weaknesses section of Sonny's draft profile:

He has proved a ridiculous amount of people wrong over the journey, has Michael Walters, in many different ways and he has done it through belief in himself, his family and in his community.

He threw many Ms for Midland. Let's throw as many Ws for Walters.

And just like that it’s over. ☹️ Son Son could have done the easy thing (like so many talented players have) and just quit when he was sent back to Swans. Instead he did the hard thing and buckled down and created a wonderful career for himself .
Kudos Sonny and thanks.
