My favourite game changing moment from So-Son was when he tried to mark a certain Pav goal, stole our momentum and we lost.
My favourite was when he won us the match the week before. Interesting that you single out a mistake as your favourite. I recall Pav missing an easy set shot not long after, so not sure why Walters gets the blame.

The fact he was sent to purgatory not long afterwards said a lot about how the club operates.

SCOS, get out of my Walters thread.

Walters, get into my forward line and kick me some goals.

PRetty sure this is exactly what the coaching staff will say to Sonny this week.

'Mate just plonk yaself in the forward 50 and kick some goals.'

This will surely lead to victory. Our plan is flawless.

I hope Sonny plays. Doesn't get too much of the ball, but when he does, he's lethal with it. And someone who doesn't seem to shy away from 'big' moments, like many in our team do. I just hope he's got his head screwed on right this time.

He certainly looks fitter than he I can recall him, I think he's ready to make the next step as a quality afl forward.

Next year's forward line:

Mayne Cloke Fyfe
Walters Pavlich Ballantyne

Here is the key for me, he's a one touch player. We need someone like that up forward.

These are Mellington's basic stats for the 2012 season:

R1- 5d, 1m, 3g, 0b, 5t, 1ga, 0i50
R2- 4d, 0m, 0g, 0b, 1t, 0ga, 0i50
R3- 8d, 4m, 1g, 3b, 1t, 0ga, 0i50

Hardly setting the world on fire and yet our side is missing him at the moment.

Walters could match that contribution.

Neale is a midfielder. Ballantyne is better as a HF; also playing predominately as a midfielder at the moment.

Rioli, Betts, Garlett, Milne, etc, are all the same, tackle, apply pressure, and kick a few quick goals. They only need the pill a few times to score, and have to be tagged, watched.
We need guys in the team with speed of mind, and classy users. You can try all the plodders you like, but Walters position is as a Forward first, and what this team requires are Forwards who know how to attack.
With Balla, Walters, Mayne, Clarke, Pav, and perhaps Mcpharlin, opposition clubs would be having sleepless nights.
Silvagni would have to play, Broughton, Deboer as mids, Mundy to the half back line.

I like all this! Except Mundy, he'll come good in the midfield.

I was surprised to see that Sony's career stats are reasonably good.

So it begs the question - why isn't he in the starting 22?

Is it because there are flaws to the defensive side of his game or his tank isn't to AFL standard?

Or maybe the game plan requires most players be able to rotate through the midfield (last week there were 14), and Sonny can't do this at an AFL level?

I haven't seen him playing for Swans this year, has he played consistently over 4 quarters? Does the club monitor their output via GPS?

Consistency on the up, but still seems to have his "on switch". ie, 2 hangers, 3 goals and 2 goal assists in the final quater a couple weeks back to get swans over the line all in the final quater, after being quiet before then.

Might be a bad example, the swans were basically dominant in the last so he had more chances.

the WAFL watch generally sounds positive, but they do ask for a consistent 4qr effort.

Swan Districts 21.9 (135) defeated Perth 14.14 (98)

Michael Walters - (SD) 11 disposals, 8 kicks, 3 handballs, 3 marks, 3 goals
Michael played forward, at the feet of Ashley Hansen. He didn’t have much of an impact until the last quarter when he kicked two late goals, which gave him three in total. He went into defence for a short period and showed he was effective when he got into the hole and delivered the ball effectively.

East Perth 15.16 (106) defeated Swan Districts 9.17 (71)

Michael Walters - (SD) 18 disposals (15 kicks, 3 handballs), 6 marks, 1 goal
Michael played the first half as a small forward and most of the second half as an extra man in defence. When he had the ball in his hands, he was very dangerous. He kicked 1.1 and had four score assists, and his disposal was neat and creative. Michael cut off a number of entries inside 50 through reading it well when he was the extra man, and he set up a number of counter attacks.

Swan Districts 20.16 (136) def Subiaco 15.10 (100)

Michael WALTERS (SD)
- 13 disposals (10 kicks, 3 handballs), 5 marks, 4 goals
It was a game of contrasting halves for Michael. While he worked hard in the first half, getting involved in chains of ball movement, he turned the game after half-time. From half-way into the third quarter, he was involved in some special passages of play. He ended up kicking four goals, had at least four goal-assists and ended up taking two hangers. Michael really moved well around stoppages and showed some good timing and clean ball handling. The defensive side of his game was also a real positive.

1) Take pressure off the forward line and finally get some movement happening there.

2) Fit and firing to make it back to the AFL

and

3) It's a derby. Increase in intensity and determination

Just three reasons why Son Son definitely needs to come back in.

I agree with all these points. Its been well know that our forward line has been stagnated this season.

Considering Ballantyne is on one forward pocket, I would like to see walters on the Other pocket as well. Pearce has been good in the midfield and has been kicking important goals for us when we won as well.

Anyone got the Youtube Footage of when Walters kicked the winning goal from a tight angle at the Gabba against the lions round 1 last year?:D

Nothing other than a hunch, Ross is a disciplinarian, this has been clear since the beginning of his coaching career, generally with those sorts of characters it is hard to get back into their good graces once trust is lost.

yeah, so do i, he has been unfit after every pre-season bar one, and then got himself back in to shape leading us to think that he has picked his game up... it could very well happen again next year, we dont know, but the form guide leaves him open to these questions. I truly hope he gets his proffessionalism up for good, but i guess proof is in the pudding.... kinda like im still sceptical on johnson, though i fully congratulate him on his year to date, there is still a nagging feeling in the back of my mind that he will revert back to the form of the last 6 years

i think the trio of ruckman is unsustainable, its a running game now, and two of those three blokes cant run

Yeah you got a good point there. If theres one thing that he did learn under Paul Roos was a no d***head policy

Were you awake when you thought that up. Or was it just a dream?

Are you people all so convinced he has turned around his attitude and is a new footballer now?

I still think he is a risk.

Just got to have a look at him, looks like Krakuer, and his games in last few weeks he has an aura of dangerous about him, he's alligned himself to have a impact like his oldmates yarren and nitnak, theyve been asked before who was the best on their day, they all said Son Son by long shot, including SonSon :/

now that hes FIT, i mean bloody fit, we'll see some constitancy i think. He has always been very confident, a quality that produces the guns.

Been quite consistant this year, has the ability to turn it on so can make him appear less consistant than he is, but yeah LEAPS and BOUNDS when it comes to his defensive effort and how much he covers the ground.

But literally, if you saw him lately and havnt seen him since his freo days, the only defining feature is his neck tattoo, guy looks completely different, alot like Krakuer. Considering he's a fair bit smaller than Crowley and has lost the same amount of kilo's, his improvement should mirrors Crowely at AFL level. Cept SonSon can actually look somewhere before he kicks the ball, something Crowley and alot of whiteboys fail to grasp :/

Always worries me when an AFL player does most of his good work in the last quarter in the wafl. Really just better fitness. However, he has been brilliant at times this year, especially the last few weeks and we need something like him in the team. Hope he gets a gig.
