Didn’t a school boy Glen Jakovich play for WA when it was in the AFL era? He must have lined up on Gary Ablett?

I quite like that concept and it’s a shame they haven’t kept it going, I think the US basketball team take a college kid to the Olympics.

Yes, I think so. 1990 maybe. Before he'd played for West Coast but probably on their list as a pre-draft zone selection along with Mitchell White.

Edit: He was picked up as an AFL zone selection in 1990 so he was still just a WAFL player. He played in the '89 WAFL Grand Final for SF.

There's always been an element of SOO being an exhibition game especially when they were played mid-week in the 1980's, and there were always squad compromises because the players picked for the teams had to play again on the following weekend. There were limits on the number of players that could picked from Victorian teams by WA. Eg: If the Vics picked 3 players from Carlton for their team then WA might only be able to pick 1 from Carlton.

The carnival format at the end of the year had less compromised selections but it was also at time when players were probably ready to go on holiday.

If WA get thrashed by Victoria, it'll just make SA want to show they can do a better job. If WA somehow win, then the Vics will want a rematch to prove it was a fluke.

After about 5 minutes into the Indigenous Allstars game it was very clear we were meant to be the Washington Generals to their Globetrotters, which was fine for what it was.

For SOO to work I think they need to land somewhere along the lines of the NBA Allstars game - players taking it seriously enough, but no-one wanting to see anyone injured or rubbed out for weeks for something that's not the main game.

The biggest issue will be team cohesion, or more so lack thereof, from making it a good spectacle compared to the afl. Expect it to be frustrating especially around stoppages and blown defensive coverage.

Could be fun if it is tight late, but expect vics to have it in the bag by quarter time, then the whole thing will be like a training run.

WA will come out flat as tacks after being subjected to a Dean Cox motivational speech.

We need to return to what worked for us previously, we have to be too quick for them to win the game. It’s possible especially in an exhibition game (it’s not going to be like NSW v Queensland rugby SOR).
I come in peace. Just wanting to share an opinion - I reckon people will view this game as mostly an exhibition... unless WA win. IMO a Victorian loss is what will ignite life into the Origin concept in the AFL because everyone thinks they already know what the result is going to be in this game so the shock will be real if the Vics lose. I also think the AFL has signalled its intentions to potentially take this seriously by not allowing Will Ashcroft to pull on the Big V jumper. I just think you wouldn't say no to the two-time reigning Norm Smith Medallist if this was only intended to be a one-off exhibition game with no future ramifications.

You're totally right that WA have to use their speed advantage if they are any chance of winning. Burn them with your transition game and speed on the outside. Speed kills, if you use it correctly.
