Just prooves they know sweet feck all about football. They both play hard with eyes for the ball.... Ablett gets smashed every week illegally, sure he whinges, chappy does too but the free kicks are there...

I read this article earlier today and yeah I was shocked!
"Geelong is being foolish complaining publicly and the players are being immature". The players are not being IMMATURE by telling what the umpire did coz the umpire WAS out of line and he should be punished or told to put his head in. The umpire shouldn't be allowed to get away with it and they players did the right thing in my opinion. If the players feel so strongly about the matter and go to the AFL about it then Andrew Demitrou should respect that and not just blow it off like he did. I think the AFL handled the matter very poorly. Geelong can't really move on because this could easily happen again the next time that umpire does a Geelong game. Something needs to be down so that idiot Goldspink doesn't do it again!

Sure Ablett staged free kicks on the occasion... who doesn't? But it doesn't give the umpire any right to speak to the players in the way he suposebly did.

Those to are certainly not the worst in the AFL. If Jnr goes to ground, it means something has happened eg he has been pushed, pulled whatever. he never loses his feet unless something has happened.

Goldspink is an idiot. Was right in front of me at the city end on the weekend, and paid ridiculous frees.

Umpires should be AS INVISIBLE AS POSSIBLE. I don't care if they are "characters" as I think Demetriou said, to me, a well-umpired game is when you don't notice them. I think there should only be 2 too but that's another story.

As for the Ablett/Chapman allegations, I think Chappy likes to duck his head (not acting, just a way to break a tackle) and as a result sometimes gets a 'too high' free kick. No acting there. Ablett rarely gets a free as it is, and can get frustrated because of it. Gets tagged VERY heavily and rarely receives frees. I have never see him act either - even when he gets his head punched in like he did in the last quarter on the weekend.

I assume that article was written by Derek Humphrey Smith, your man is a lawyer, he gets about thinking he and his mates are an important part of the game, enough said.

Quite frankly I am disgusted to find out that he is still getting coverage in Melbourne football circles.

As for the outcry, I would take their microphones and numbers away, make them an anonymous part of the game like they should be. Their arrogance is going to far.

Next.

I believe the article stated that "Players are willing to dish it out, but then not willing to take it"... UM, HELLO MCFLY... Players get a free kick paid against them, or 50M, or even reported (re. Cameron Mooney in the VFL).

Umpires have NO interest whatsoever in the end result of the game. When a player (in his opinion) gets a rough deal and is angry, for sure he will get frustrated. Umps are there to make desicions and maintain control of the game.

Imo, they have no business whatsoever to inflame any situation and should be professional at all times.

Basically Goldspink is a d-ick.

I read Tim McGrath's article in the Addy today.
He said something like "Why can't the umpires be part of the fun too?"
.. Maybe because they are there to umpire, not insult players.

ARGH, makes me angry.

look what happens when a player comments to an umpire about HIS game. Mutual respect..Why would GAJ and Chappy publicly complain if there was nothing in it? :thumbsd:

Who woulda thunk.

The article was written by Derek The-Umpires-Never-Do-Anything-Wrong-Humphrey-Smith.

It's a real blight on the game when we have such one eyed dicks like him commenting from the umpires perspective, rather then someone who can actually talk sense all the time and admit to the fact that umpires do make mistakes and do stupid things as well and should not be immune to criticism.

Hah, it was written by a white maggot himself? Who bloody cares what humphry Bear thinks, Chaps and Ablett would floor the wimpy little man if they sneezed on him.

Shocking by the afl. didnt even interview the players just asked the ump about it and then said gaz and chapo were lying. idiouts

Humphrey Smith's a complete idiot.

I remember after the round 4 game against the Bulldogs, he wrote in his weekly column, that the game was very well umpired.

And yet almost every other person who watched the game and every commentator thought it was woefully over-umpired, with something like over 50 free kicks paid for the whole match.

Just another person who thinks he's bigger than the game.

The article manages to completely miss the point.

The issue is not that the players are sooks; the issue is that when challenged on why he didn't award a free Goldspink, rather than explain that he hadn't thought it was a free or didn't see it or whatever, implied that fairness was irrelevant.

If Humphrey B Bear had ever got a hard ball in his life you may respect his opinion but the guy is just another (former) umpire who loves getting as much exposure as he possibily can thinking he is a character of the game. I know I turn channels when he comes onto the radio he is such a self-righteous tosser.

if a player sledges an umpire on or off the field they get anything from a free kick paid against them to being reported or fined. If the umpire sledges a player, the player gets called a sook for complaining about it. Smells like double standards to me.

The point, which DHS misses entirley, is that umpires are meant to be objective. They are meant to call the game with impartiality. That's their job and what they are paid to do. Therefore, it's totally inappropriate for an umpire to descend to the level of abusing players.

It's completely besdies the point to say that players abuse umpires, therefore no-one should complain when an umpire has a go back at a player. Players aren't meant to be impartial. Umpires, however, are supposed to be impartial, and when they're sledging and backshatting players (of any team), you have to question that impartiality.

correct...

Its funny the more things that happen like this the closer the AFL is to either
a) a strike
b) a massive courtcase

Darren Goldspink is an idiot. But I am not surprised that the AFL wimped it again. I realize now that the umpires have absolutely no accountability. They can say and do what they please, and the AFL will defend them, because they want to encourage more people to become umpires. I have a couple of suggestions to solve this problem:

This may sound weird, considering that we are criticising umpires, but maybe they should be paid more. Hear me out, I will explain. By paying umpires more, :

(1) They would get more umpires- Let's face it, there will always be people to do any job if they're paid well enough. Look at politicians. They are criticised, called liars and all sorts of names (justly or unjustly), but they get paid well, so they have to cop it. Same with AFL players. People expect more from AFL players because "they get paid well". Pay umpires more, and you will get more umpires. Also, you will get a better quality of umpire, as the better you umpire, the more you get paid

(2) Umpires will have to be more accountable- Like with other highly paid professions, if umpires get paid more, then they will have to umpire better, since the AFL will pressure the umpires to earn their money. The AFL may put up with less of Goldspink's antics if they are paying his wage. Everyone else are expected to perform according to what they earn, well so should umpires. They don't deserve a pay rise, but they will be forced to show that they deserve it.

Everyone else in society are accountable in doing their job properly, and are accountable to others (such as their customers). There is no excuse for umpires to avoid accountability to the clubs and to footy fans. It's not just a case of justice being done, but being seen to be done.

What would the AFL do if an idigenous player says that an umpire racially abused him? The AFL would be forced to act, or face community backlash.

Haha, yeah wishful thinking that, me thinks! Andrew Demetrio would read the clubs written complaint, (promptly toss it in the nearest trash can for 3 points), merely ask the umpire in question.. he would refut it.. and that would be the end of it!!!

I watched the Footy Show today (yes i taped it :o :o ), and thought it was an intersting point that the Club doctor (yeah, the club doc for Geelong), backed Chapmans claim. Basically the umpire is more than likely a lying scumbag!! Kinda reminds you of the Umps in the air/plane 'scandal' with Tony Jones dont it??
