Been a big week... Flew to Melbourne to see Black Label Society, Hellyeah and Holy Grail on Tuesday then attended the best festival to ever hit our shores yesterday. What an amazing day !!

My day went as follows -

Gojira - Absolute quality....thoroughly enjoyed their set.

Hellyeah - These guys are lots of fun. Love Vinnie.

Alter Bridge - Just a class act. Mark Tremonti is amazing and Myles Kennedy would have to be the best front man in the world right now. He's the total package.

Meshuggah - Seen them a few times now. Tomas Haake is just an amzing drummer. His time signatures are amazing !!

Had a rest and something to eat for a while...

Trivium - Again, seen them a lot. Ho hum for me these days.

Mastodon - Never really got into these guys....must give them a bit more of an opportunity after seeing them yesterday.

Lamb of God - Awesome set...loved the new tracks live. Awesome sound. Could watch those guys over and over.

Black Label Society - My highlight. Love Zakk, love their music, love their vibe. Had a blast. Boutique type crowd due to everyone watching Limp Bizkit...WTF? Didn't matter and meant I could get right to the front. Nick was trying to get me one of his picks and some snoozer nabbed it from right out in front of me....shattered.

Unearth - Not for me

Watain - Not for me, but had to tick "Black Metal show" of my check list.

Machine Head - Again, seen them plenty....and they never disappoint. Massive sound.

What a massive week it's been for me. I am still finishing my photo processing, hopefully will get them all done tonight.

Monday - Bad Religion, Strung Out, Street Dog, The Menzingers - The Menzingers and Street Dogs impressed, Strung Out were good, BR OK.

Tuesday - Machine Head, Chimaira, Shadows Fall, Times of Grace - ToG pretty Good, Shadows Fall were excellent, Chimaira aren't really my thing, Machine Head were Machine Head, pretty good but not as good as they used to be.

Wednesday - Alter Bridge and Steel Panther. Steel Panther pretty funny and entertaining something like a cross between Poison and Spinal Tap, the schtick did wear a bit thin after a while though - plenty of fine rack on display. Alter Bridge were sensational - they're a band in hot rocking form. I was surprised to see that a fair portion of the crowd had left after SP, those that left really missed out.

Thursday - Slipknot and Trivium. Trivium ho-hum. Slipknot pretty ****ing insane - as a photographer they are an amazing band to have the privilege to photograph.

Friday - due to the heavy traffic I missed Break Even and Cherri Bomb.

Steel Panther - see comments above but a distinct lack of rack compared to the show on Wednesday, the crowd lapped them up.

Gojira - pretty good.

Lostprophets - Very good.

Alter Bridge - See comments re Wednesday - sensational.

Wednesday 13 - they put on a pretty entertaining show.

A Day To Remember - a band to forget

Coal Chamber - I thought they were pretty enjoyable and the bass player is a stunner.

Cobra Starship - why did I bother?

Biohazard - I only caught their last song but they were really dishing it up - I wish I'd seen their whole set.

In This Moment - Absolutely sensational - my favourite act of the day.

Mastodon - Pretty good

Manson - ho-hum

Dillinger Escape Plan - plenty of energy but not much power

Slipknot - should have been the headliners - great big rock show!

I Am The Avalanche - didn't do much for me

Cro-Mags - excellent old school hardcore punk.

Watain - visually interesting, I found them pretty funny with songs like "Sword of the Antichrist" - reminded me of Barbarion on steroids but taking things seriously.

Angels and Airwaves - OK but not really my thing.
 
Went to Brisbane Soundwave and saw Chimaira, Black Dahlia Murder, Times of Grace, Lostprophets, Alter Bridge, A Day To Remember, Bush, Trivium, Mastodon, Hatebreed, Slipknot, Enter Shikari & a little bit of VersaEmerge

Chimaira - Was pretty far back and really enjoyed their sound. Really impressed me actually. I had only heard Year of the Snake before Soundwave and have since gotten into them:thumbsu:

Black Dahlia Murder - Not for me at all, got a good spot for ToG during their set though

Times of Grace - One of my highlights, I am a huge fan and belting out the lyrics/moshing to Strength in Numbers was a fantastic experience. They were very appreciative of the fans and equally the fans were very appreciative of Adam getting up there with a broken leg.

I tould have liked to have heard 'Hymn of a Broken Man' but overall I thought a really good set list with probably 6 of my favourite 8 ToG songs. Vocals were great, Jesse was Jesse. Overall, a very powerful performance.

Lostprophets - I've quite recently become a fan and they performed pretty well as I expected. They closed with Last Train Home which got a pretty good reception.

Alter Bridge - Listened from the grandstand for first half of their set and then 2nd half I got a good position for ADTR on other stage. I thought they were great, quality setlist and Mark Tremonti killed it. Was frustrated by the ADTR fans beside me paying them out.

A Day To Remember - Must say I really enjoyed them, mainly cause of the crowd atmosphere. Was close to the front and the crowd went insane. Everyone at the front got crushed at the start of The Downfall of Us All, was somewhat concerned that another 'Jessica' scenario could arise. Good set list, clean vocals and crowd interaction but most of the time I really didn't like Jeremy's screaming but I expected that after watching several youtube videos.

I really enjoyed them but certainly not for everyone. Wish I could have seen both ADTR and Meshuggah.

Bush - Didn't hear all of their set because I was meeting up with a mate/getting food but what I did hear from the grandstand was very good. Quality set list and I enjoyed the Come Together cover.

Trivium - Got a good position for Mastodon during their set. They didn't play my personal favourites 'Anthem (We are Fire) & Built to Fall' but I thought they were pretty good nevertheless. I would have happily seen Staind instead but wanted a good spot for Mastodon.

Mastodon - Pretty good, I enjoyed their set list. Was very very happy to hear them play Megalodon. Crowd wasn't as big as I expected, Limp Bizkit must have drawn a huge crowd.

Hatebreed - One of my highlights, pretty small crowd but fantastic energy as expected and I was able to get right up the front. I wasn't a huge fan of their set list (really would have liked to have heard different songs from The Rise of Brutality) but in saying that Everyone Bleeds Now, Destroy Everything & I Will be Heard absolutely went off. Can't wait to see them again! I only wish they didn't clash with Machine Head


Slipknot - Heard the last 60-70 mins of Slipknot. First time seeing them and WOW they really know how to put on a show. Corey Taylor's vocals were brilliant, real quality performers and a great setlist. Not a huge fan but I was very impressed with them, I thought they should have closed.

Enter Shikari - Not a fan of SOAD and since I was at the very back for Slipknot so I knew I wouldn't be able to get a good positon for SOAD so I saw Enter Shikari instead. I'm not really a fan but I had heard they were great live and they did not disappoint. A very polished performance, the crowd was really into it and the pit was pretty good. Was glad I passed up SOAD to see them.

VersaEmerge - Would have seen LoG but Enter Shikari finished almost 10 mins late so I'd already missed half their set and knew it would be absolutely packed so due partially to the close proximity of stage 5 (from stage 6) I went to see VersaEmerge for a couple songs.

I am partial to a few of their songs and think Sierra has a good voice but **** they were underwhelming. Sierra sounded average at times and terrible at others. I always intended to leave a little early to beat the rush so in some respects I am glad I disliked VersaEmerge. As it turned out I could only stand hearing 2-3 songs before I left. Definitely should have seen LoG.


Overall, it was such an awesome day! My only real disappointment was not seeing Turisas. I didn't have the soundwave app so was unsure of when they were playing.

I assumed they would fill the spot that Black Tide did on the timetable when I saw they weren't on the metal stage at 11 but unfortunately I wasn't prepared to give up a good spot/miss some of Times of Grace to see them. I really hope they do soundwave again in a couple years and I will make certain I don't miss them again.

Can't wait till next year...

Thanks very much. There will always be a place for quality but it is tough competing in an environment where price (or no price) drives content over quality. Please don't take that as a whinge because I love what I do and feel blessed to be able do what I do.
 
Anyone care to speculate who could/should be on next year's bill? I'm thinking the following:

Creed
Tool (please)
Anthamea
Muse
The Darkness
DevilDriver
Disturbed
Fear Factory
The Mars Volta
Slayer
Metallica
Garbage
Tenacious D
Linkin Park

Even if half of those came it would be amazing - even if not quite as good as this year. A few of those are just dreams, but why not?
 
A few acts I'd love to see next year are:

Ministry
Killing Joke
Zoroastra
 
Turisas-Alright, Got the crowd in it for Rasputin

Steel Panther-Again pretty solid, few good cheap laughs, for a "Joke Band" they are damn good musicians and have some solid chops

Meshuggah-Pretty tight, However didnt do much for me

Coal Chamber-Sucks

In Flames-Played mostly new stuff+Nothing older then Reroute to Remain, however solid

Mastodon-Pretty good, The Setlist is becomming a monster however. Dont like the guitarist's voice live,

Dillinger-Dont expect anything less nowdays, If you have never seen Dillinger, Do yourselfs a favour and do so, Perth Crowd was Absolutly dead for the first 2-3 songs, They managed to whip them into a frenzy, One of the best bands at communicating with the crowds to go ape-shit

Slipknot-Absolutly loathe the music, however as a preformance and working the crowd i dont think many do it better. I feel anyone if they put the idea that the music is piss poor at the back of the head anyone would enjoy the live show. The fans are Rabid/Loyal, And have really earned a crust from the preformance side of music. Would never listen to them, however would gladly pay 100+ dollars to see them live.

Devin Townsend-Got caught up watching Soad, Again small crowd but he was damn good, Funny dude as well and a few unique takes on his own songs

System of a Down-Well it wasnt great, im not a huge fan of anything but toxicity and Innervisions (I really like a few singles, cant stand the band) However very Plain and not a huge amount of energy,


Over-all, **** 37 degree heat, I have horrible T-Shirt burns and will get my ass handed to me for not working on that day, However would gladly go again tomorrow if it was on, 170 dollars is EASILY worth it.

Had a great day, Even if im a fan of 4 of the bands i saw (another one clashed with Dillinger) it was a great way, Whats wrong with my statement?

Yeah lets go to a festival and only watch bands we don't like. Should be fun :cool:
 
**** it was hot yesterday. Also am pretty glad I wrote down set times for bands from facebook that morning as the timetable given to me at the showgrounds wasnt right for stage 7.

Anyway pretty cool set from Turisas, been a fan for a while. Varangian guard, Great Escape, Holmgard, Take the day, Rasputin, Sahti-Waari, Battle Metal = me pretty happy

Sort of just floated around, caught a few songs of gojira, Steel Panther. Went and saw full sets for Paradise Lost, Hell Yeah, Cathedral, Mastodon, BLS (Probably no need for the 10 minute guitar solo). Missed part of Devin who I was mainly there to see and then went and watched the last hour of system. So all in all a good day.

Also caught a bit of Manson, I reckon that if you added up all the time between songs it would probably equate to about 10 minutes of just silence.

Missed a bit of Dillinger because of the Timetable, F**kwits,.


And oh Boy was it hot, im usually alright in the sun for 12-13 hours, However i got burnt like a tomato yesterday, Not to mention i smashed down about 9 bottles of water and sweated it all back out

Cky- alright- dont know many of their songs
Alter Bridge - pretty good
Limp Bizkit - they were great- better than i expected- some good pits going aswell- good fun
Slipknot- Great- went crazy
System of a down - awesome- one of the best bands ive seen live.

had to wait through manson aswell- **** that was annoying

It's pretty shit how they can't keep the times right... I don't know why they can't just put up a big board with a map, and a section for all the times with it being updated when they get changed... Another board behind at each sound/light board tent with times being updated. So annoying when they change bands from stages and times they are on.

Black Tide pulled out at the 11th hour due to a family emergency hence the timetable for that stage being out of whack.
 
Went to Melbourne. Planned on being in the gate at 11 as I wanted to check out Royal Republic. Saw a couple of songs on YouTube and they seemed quirky enough to enjoy. Arrived at midday, missed out!

After that, Unwritten Law. Very nice, got me pretty pumped for the day. A band that I've wanted to see since high school so a tick on the bucket list!

Was with mates so went to find them at Steel Panther. Don't know who was on stage one after them but wasn't enjoying it at all

Skimmed a few stages before heading to Turisas. YES! ****ing awesome! Crowd was chanting Turisas at least 3 songs out. Would have been great for the ego of the band still playing :D
Pissed to hear now that they played Stand Up And Fight in Adelaide, but they were the highlight of the festival, until 8:30.

Caught Bush. Was ok. Nothing more, nothing less

Then spent way too long lining up for grog

Limp Bizkit. Better than I expected, but I was soon bored, and I own their first three albums :o

Manson...nuf ced

Slipknot. How good are they?!? Knew more of their stuff than I realised

System of a Down. My reason for attending. And they did not disappoint! I don't even think I would change the setlist, bar adding Cigaro purely so I can shout 'my **** is much bigger than yours!'

Took over an hour to get on a train...even that was enjoyable! Back to hotel at 2, airport at 6, cricket at 11...that hurt...
 
I wish they'd put stage numbers on stages, especially the sheds. It would make it so much easier to navigate the big crowds.
 
They had an updated timetable on the website but I found that a lot of the bands were out of sync with their times by 10-15 minutes.
