I've heard that story about the dutch being the first there from multiple sources, interesting to hear the actual basis for the story.Mr Q said:Partially true for the Western Cape. Not true for the rest of South Africa.

In regards to the topic, the introduction of fairly harsh affirmative action policies in RSA is causing more problems than it is solving. These affirmative action policies are prone to the sorts of corruption that are seen in Zimbabwe, whereby the wealth is redistributed to those connected to the ruling party.
I’m not only referring to the farms being seized, but the Black Economic Empowerment program in general, ie : http://www.worldsecuritynetwork.com/showArticle3.cfm?article_id=12695
I really question whether redressing the inequities left from apartheid can be done in as little as 10 years.
However, the BEE does seem fairly effective in driving a large segment of the upper/middle class to emigrate (ie whites). The article above claims they aren’t leaving en masse, but personally I think this is more related to 1st world countries immigration policies constraining emigration to a relative trickle. They are leaving when they can, not when they want to.
Certainly most Perth people would note the increasing presence of Suid Effricans (who else is buying all those expensive Western Force memberships ).
Combine this all with crime, unemployment and aids and RSA looks to have a fairly murky future.
