Partially true for the Western Cape. Not true for the rest of South Africa.
I've heard that story about the dutch being the first there from multiple sources, interesting to hear the actual basis for the story.

Of course, why anyone would want to take any notice of you when you deliberately throw in incendiary racist terms like "kaffir" I wouldn't know.
Agree.

In regards to the topic, the introduction of fairly harsh affirmative action policies in RSA is causing more problems than it is solving. These affirmative action policies are prone to the sorts of corruption that are seen in Zimbabwe, whereby the wealth is redistributed to those connected to the ruling party.

I’m not only referring to the farms being seized, but the Black Economic Empowerment program in general, ie : http://www.worldsecuritynetwork.com/showArticle3.cfm?article_id=12695

I really question whether redressing the inequities left from apartheid can be done in as little as 10 years.

However, the BEE does seem fairly effective in driving a large segment of the upper/middle class to emigrate (ie whites). The article above claims they aren’t leaving en masse, but personally I think this is more related to 1st world countries immigration policies constraining emigration to a relative trickle. They are leaving when they can, not when they want to.

Certainly most Perth people would note the increasing presence of Suid Effricans (who else is buying all those expensive Western Force memberships:p ).

Combine this all with crime, unemployment and aids and RSA looks to have a fairly murky future.

Mugabe admits farm policy failed

August 15, 2006

HARARE, Zimbabwe -- President Robert Mugabe admitted yesterday that Zimbabweans were "begging" for food because of his mass seizure of white-owned farms.

After years of official assertions that his land policies would improve production and guarantee self-sufficiency, he conceded that many of those awarded white-owned farms were doing nothing with their gains.

"If farming is not in your blood, switch to what you are good at," Mr. Mugabe told supporters in Harare, Zimbabwe's capital. "We want those with land to use it. We don't want to keep begging for food."

Zimbabwe has depended since 2001 on emergency supplies from the United Nations World Food Program. Almost 4 million people -- one third of the population -- needed help from the program last year.

Food once ranked among Zimbabwe's main exports. The main reason for the switch from self-sufficiency to dependency is the transfer of commercial farms to those with no training, capital, expertise or equipment for farming.
Mr. Mugabe's speech at the annual ceremony remembering the 1970s war against white Rhodesia amounted to an admission of failure.

"Those who can't produce, be warned: We will take the land back," he said.
"We now need to distinguish capable and committed farmers from holders of land who are mere chancers and who should be made to seek opportunities elsewhere."

Mr. Mugabe's regime has evicted all but a few hundred of the 4,000 white farmers who, until the start of the land seizures six years ago, were the backbone of the economy.

Some good friends of mine went on a trip to SA afew years ago and were amazed and shocked to find that tourists have to be personally escorted everywhere or stay in their hotels or else be in severe danger of being mugged, raped and murdered.

My friends are intrepid third world travellers and had not expereinced anything like it.

Maybe someone has had a more positive experience.

Why wouldn't SA eventually go the same way as the rest of Africa?

Down the gurgler you mean?

Well there are too many rich 'non whites' now to go to communism.

Sounds a lot like my experience in Southern Africa.

On arrival at J’burg airport a bloodshot eyed black guy asked me for a smoke, and snatched the whole packet when I had the decency to reciprocate. On the way to the Hotel our black cab driver picked up his mate who had just robbed a jewellery store.

That was my first 15 minutes in South Africa.

Our hotel in Zimbabwe was like an army barrack, surrounded by guards with serious firepower. They escorted us everywhere, including the 3 minute walk to Vic Falls during which time we were swarmed by blacks selling stolen souvenirs (so we were told).

Botswana was surprisingly OK, the most politically stable country in the region, the safest, and the only place I would consider returning to.

Its such a shame, Southern Africa has so much potential, but so little hope. Tourism has died in the arse, and all the whites want out. See you later economy.

Mr Q must pass for a local.

Once again we see a Zimbabwe hold a rigged election, this time going to even new lows for the Zanu-PDF with putting dead people on the electoral role and removing 90% of those under 30. According to the Zimbabwe electoral role the country is home to the world's old man at 135 and has more than 116,000 people over 100 depsite the average life expectancy being only 51.

And as is the norm in countries where they like to manipulate the election in pro-government regions there are plenty of polling stations, whilst in opposition strongholds there are few, it must be added that they do this in the USA as well.

What is of the concern is how quickly Zuma congratulated Mugabe on the win. It is no secret that Zuma has looked up to the despot since his days in the ANC youth league, but what has been a concern is his desire to copy some of his policies, in particular some of the pro-black policies forcing companies to employ non-whites in senior executive positions regardless of skills and in ownership of businesses. It doesn't take much to see how easy it would be for South Africa to quickly go from these steps to repossession of farms.

I wouldn't call it "doing good"; more like finally admitting the bleeding obvious.

Nations like Zim and South Africa need democracy like they need a hole in the head.

What they do need is a strong government who can lead the nation out of poverty and make tough decisions.

Instead they have corruption, collusion and nepotism.

In Zimbabwe's case, they get Mugabe and his criminal cronies.

Jacob Zuma is no better, he is corrupt and has his criminal cronies in cosy jobs too. The question that remains to be answered is, will he just line the pockets of his friends or will he line the pockets of all the senior people in the ANC & miltary?

My grandparents were tossing up between South Africa and Australia as a developed country to relocate and start anew in the 1970s.

I'm so glad they chose Australia.

It is pretty amazing that South Africa, Argentina and Australia were about par in those days. Without looking I would have thought it would have gone South Africa, Australia followed by Argentina based on GDP alone.

After the war my grandparents had a choice between the US, Australia or staying in Czech or Slovak republics. The initial choice was the US but due to the boat being full they came to Oz.

They then spent 2 years in work camps in country Australia until their qualifications were recognised and their english was up to standard.

lol. Showing your true colours again.

lol. Showing your true colours again.

you really struggle with the basics. You have some crazy idea that social security payments are racist. You have some crazy idea that increasing demand doesn't benefit suppliers

Now you fail to see that democracy fails in poor nations, more often than not, because feudal families can buy votes undermining the very thing that makes democracy work.

You pretend to give a s**t about human rights and the common person but the only thing you have ever given a * about is yourself. Even democracy can be thrown in the bin.

South African Boers yearning for the "good old days" of white supremacism under apartheid will fit right in in Putin's Russia, where they've magically mutated into "refugees".

15,000 Boers plan move to Russia from South Africa

What's the complaint? With the ANC poised to amend the SA constitution to allow farm seizure without compensation these white farmers are letting the situation tell them something and our moving elsewhere. This is a situation that benefits all parties.

1. SA can redistribute land to blacks and ship those horrible racists off to another country
2. The white farmers can go farm somewhere else where they are welcome
3. Russia picks up some of SA's surplus farmers

It's a 360 degree win so why the sooking? I appreciate that the whites in SA brought this on themselves but what do you expect them to do once they are dispossessed of their farms , hang around out the front?
