south africa has the momentum going into the series. England just got whitewashed by pakistan and is already 1 down against sri lanka.

England bowling is sensational as is south africa.

It's the batting that is issue for both sides. SA eventually made some decent score by the 3rd test, england has yet to make a massive 1st inning score.

England's got better bowling depth with Finn, Bresnan and Monnnnnnnnnnty on the side.

SA only got De Lange on the side but has better batting with Duminy in form with a century as a reserve.

All above is in relations to the test side, i don't care bout 1day or 2020.

They're reasonably similar sides, I would SA marginally ahead due to England not being able to hit the ball off the square at the moment. Both sides need their opening batsmen to fire as the ball is going to be doing a lot of talking.

England are a terrible no 1 ?..yet they've won 8 out of last 10 series . They won the ashes convincingly.
Their side has numerous very talented players

I think you're being a bit harsh.

whoever wins this series will be a worthy no1

They were dreadful in UAE, and started poorly in Sri Lanka. Though south Africa is hardly going to play 3 spinners....ever.

Rudolph will probably get first test over Duminy. He was the incumbant in NZ and scored a hundred in Dunedin. Duminy only came in because Kallis was injured.
I think it will be close because..Its being played in England, Englands batting tail is a lot better than the South Africans & Swann is a much better spinner than Tahir

WE can just compare player vs player. WE look at bowling unit. Bowling as a unit, Eng and SA are neck and neck. Batting wise, SA ahead with Peterson Smith Kallis, Rudolph and Duminy all scoring centuries in the series in NZ.

This.

Not that Steyn isn't good away from home (see India 2010 for evidence) but Anderson in England over the last 2-3 years has been unstoppable.

England still have a home 3-match series against the West Indies before South Africa. So they'll probably just be hitting their straps when South Africa arrive. South Africa have zero cricket until they play Somerset on July 9.

I can't believe some of you have Morgan back in the England side by then

In england?

Hell no, england are a joke in asia right now but at home players like bell cook kp ect are beasts and have been putting up big scores the last few home summers.

Lets face it england in the sub con is like watching a completely different team to what we will see later this year.

Whoever bats better will win

Which means the Saffers, but the English batsmen might just look a unit again without facing spin, but then there's the leggie

Which is why I lean towards the poms, they bat much longer than the Saffas ....Prior , Broad, Swann, Bresnan have a much sturdier look than Boucher ,Philander, Steyn and Morkel

Looking forward to the series. It will be close in England but think the Saffas have the team to win.

For England, Anderson is the key. I think if England has any hope, he has to have a blinder.

If the Saffas had a quality spinner, I believe they would win comfortably looking at how England have played the last 3 months.

England produced fast green tinged pitches for India last year and destroyed them.

Against South Africa I wonder if the idea might be to go the other way and overprepare the pitches a little and trust that Swann/ Monty will dominate whatever SA can throw up in the spin department.

The long range weather is predicting a hot few months which if it transpires would bake out the pitches a little for late season anyway.

If they produce the same pitches as last year it will just be a shoot out and Steyn/Morkel/Philander against Anderson/Broad/Finn or Bresnan wouldn't be a walk over but I reckon it would be enough to knock out any home advantage.
