In this weeks Messenger newspaper (A free weekly metro-wide Murdoch rag for those outside Adelaide) has the top 15 chances for the draft from South Australia as rated by Shaun Hollis. Don't know anything about Hollis, other than he does the SANFL reports for the Messenger.

Here's how he rates them in order.

1. Ryan Griffen (South) 186cm, 78kg, Medium Inside Midfielder
2. Cameron Wood (West) 203cm, 86kg, Ruck
3. Angus Monfries (Sturt) 180cm, 70kg, Small Inside Midfielder
4. Danny Meyer (Glenelg) 185cm, 74kg, Medium Forward/Midfielder
5. Chad Gibson (Norwood) 194cm, 93kg, Tall Forward/Defender/Ruck?
6. Ben Eckermann (Sturt) 177cm, 74kg, Small Inside Midfielder
7. Heath Grundy (Norwood) 190cm, 86kg, Tall Forward/Defender
8. Benet Copping (Sturt) 191cm, 75kg, Tall Forward/Defender
9. Tom Redden (Glenelg) 190cm, 74kg, Tall Forward/Defender
10. Danyle Pearce (Sturt) 178cm, 72kg, Small Outside Midfielder
11. Adam Thompson (Sturt) 180cm, 78kg, Medium Inside Midfielder
12. Jordon Russel (West) 186cm, 74kg, Medium Midfielder/Defender
13. Nick Batchelor (Norwood) 182cm, 68kg, Small Outside Midfielder
14. Brad Sugars (Glenelg) 188cm, 77kg, Medium Forward
15. Henry Slattery (West) 180cm, 80kg, Medium Inside Midfielder

Of course he suggests that clubs will draft them in a different order depending on needs.

Interesting that a few mock drafts haven't rated Chad Gibson so highly.
Apart from that not much too this.

he's not a ruckman he's a kpp and very athletic
He has been playing as a ruckman so he needs to make a transition from underage ruckman to a KPP if he wants to play AFL footy. No easy task.

I wouldn't think it would too hard for him. He's mobile enough to make the transition.

He has got most of the players there....but the order IMO is absolute bullocks.

Grundy should be a certain top 4.

1) Griffen
2) Monfries
3) Wood
4) Grundy
5) Eckermann
6) Meyer
7) Redden
8) Block (not even mentioned can't believe it)
9) Hartlett
10) Gibson
11) Mcleay
12) Pearce
13) Russell
14) Copping
15) Stribling

Both Slattery brother are pretty good and would be next, then Thompson and a few other roughies. Didnt list the older ones like Ware etc...but he would make that list.

You can add Shaun Rusling to that list. Only played 1 Reserves game and no junior games for West Adelaide this year, but is being chased by plenty of clubs.

He does mention another 24 names, I was just too lazy to type them all out. They don't have a description with them however. There is no mention of Block. Care to fill us in.

Im staggered that guy hasnt been mentioned! Only 18 and started playing reg sanfl footy for Glenelg this year, dominated 2 games with 27 and 30 touches and 2 goals in each. Averaged about 18ppg.

My apologies to McMahon, Id have him around 10 on that list of mine, forgot him.

Adam Hartlett (WA) - In my top list

Scott McMahon (E) - Again would be in my top list

James McLeay (S) - In my top list

Toby Stribling (NA) - Just in my top list

Craig Taylor (PA) - Not a bad player, if he goes will be late

Sean Rusling (WA) - Havent seen much of him but has played v. well in underage, so could go, possible rookie listing...

James Angus (E) - I'd expect him to go, decent forward prospect.

Paul Thomas (CD) - Older but Magarey medalist and best player in SANFL. Be mad not to pick him late.

Matthew Stokes (E) - 19 yo and played over 50 sanfl games. Give the kid a go, great goal sense. Pick him late.

Jason Roe (NA) - Got talent but IMO wont crack it at AFL.

Jack Juniper (Sacred Heart) - Awesome talent but does he want to play is the big question??

Elijah Ware (CD) - Should be picked up late. Quick wingman, CD premiershop player.

Tristan Gum (NA) - Not a bad kid, gets lot of ball but might get overlooked.

Alwyn Davey (SA) - Not as good as his bro, but runner up in reserves magarey I think. Prolly not worth AFL.

Scott Purling (S) - Has a lot of talent, is he old enough?? If not this year be worth drafting next year

Michael Coad (S) - Older but good KPP at either end of ground. Regular SANFL player, may go late.

Brad DeVries (N) - Hands off this kid, he is for the crows, highly talented ruckman 200cm great skills.

Brayden Fisher (WA) - Pretty good player, not sure if he will go however.

Gavin Hughes (N) - Lots of talent here, can kick heaps of goals when on song. Would be a roughie for mine but worth it.

Kyle Jenner (PA) - Not really worth it, has some talent but nothing outstanding.
Stephen Tiller (WA) - Hardly seen this guy, so could someone else enlighten me here?

David Westbrok (E) - Good kid, should go IMO, just like Whelan and Shirley went from the eagles. Running half back flank regular SANFL games and grand final player.

Tom Rischbieth (S) - Lot of talent, very fit kid, can play midfield or CHF, has grown a lot toward end of his schooling and now pretty big and strong. I think he is old enough, if not would be along same lines as a James Mcleay type who can play middle a bit.

Travis Natt (PA) - Never heard of him!!

BRADYN FISHER agrees with the assumption that he won't be drafted this year.

Taken from The Loxton News, October 13.

Big Fish prepares for draft
by Rob McLean
Draft time is just around the corner and Loxton teenager Braydn Fisher is preparing to jump into the big pond that is the AFL.
Fisher, a West Adelaide junior, was one of 19 players from South Australia and the Northern Territory screened by the AFL for suitability at the highest level on Saturday.
The screening took place
in Adelaide with players weighed and measured before taking part in fitness and physical testing.
Quietly spoken Fisher is not expecting to be drafted this year, despite having talks with Fremantle prior to the screening.
“I won’t go this year, but it will help in the lead-up to next year,” Fisher said.
The 17 and a half year old travelled to Adelaide weekly this year to play for the Bloods, while embarking upon an apprenticeship with Bee Gee Cabinet Makers, in Loxton.
Fisher, the son of Clive and Kate Fisher, is hopeful of being selected in the South Australian under 18s side next season and playing league football before facing up to the 2005 draft.
Fisher, who recorded average scores in all areas of the screenings, apart from the beep test, said competition at the screening provided a good indication of the areas he can improve upon.
“Some of those blokes are pretty good and most have had experience at league level,” Fisher said.
“It was a good experience knowing what to expect and to know that I’ve got to work harder.”
Among the SANFL league players at the screening were West Adelaide Henry Slattery, North Adelaide’s Toby Stribling, Central District premiership rover Elijah Ware and Woodville-West Torrens grand final player David Westbrook.
At 193 centimetres, Fisher is destined to be viewed by AFL clubs as a tall key position option, along the lines of St Kilda’s Nick Riewoldt.
The national draft takes place next month.

He is the NT ruckman, but at 189cm he is borderline even for a KP in the AFL. He is also 19 so no youngster.

The NT players are tough to keep track of. They might be officially listed with NT clubs but they end up scattered around the place. There were guys from WA, SA, Vic and the NT in the team and you're never too sure just where they are playing.

Wooshta - you are talking to the bloke who wrote that.
Fisher is perceived to be a bit lazy due to his laid back nature, but he's certainly not up himself. Maybe you are confusing shyness and reservedness with arrogance.

BTW - I'm not saying Fisher will make it in the AFL. But you never know do you?

Wooshta - you also don't like Byron Schammer and he's another player from up this end of the river, is there something behind your dislike of both these boys and where they grew up?

Whether he makes it to AFl level remains to be seen. However he had a very good year with West u/17s playing at CHF, which is not he easiest position to play. Finished up with around 60 goals for the year and has raised the interest of a few clubs

I'll give you that, i wasnt the biggest fan of Byron when we drfated him and fortunately i have been proved wrong. My opinion on him has definetly changed he has become a great player and hopefully he will only continue to inmprove.
But Fisher i really have no time for as a footballer, I hope he does get drafted so then i can say there someone playing AFL that i beat on one occasion. he will probably make it to a senior list ut he wont play a game in my opinion.

Didn't play CHF this year mate, iv got mates here at Waikerie that play with Westies and they said he plays from a wing because of his great speed and pushes forward very often.
