Port Adelaide’s claim as the most successful club in Australia with 40 premierships and 4 Champions of Australia titles confirm they are footballing royalty. After an acrimonious time at the top level PAFC handed their license to Norwood to join the SCFL. Staying with the same team in President David Koch and elevating Robbie Gray to the captaincy, Alberton came full circle in completing the dream team by signing favourite son Nathan Buckley as senior coach of Port. Port Adelaide will continue to play games at Adelaide Oval with sellouts expected at each home game. Black and White have been the club’s colours for over 100 years and were adamant they not be changed for this new league. along with the classic Prison Bar guernsey Black Shorts and Black Socks will compliment the look. Port’s away will be a White guernsey with a large Mudlark centred, White Shorts and White Socks with Black Trim finish the uniform.

With 17 premierships in the trophy case, Port Melbourne are the team with the success every other team envies. Founded in 1874, the Borough have the goal kicking legacy and the talent to be a force in this competition. Ashley Hansen comes on board as coach at North Port Oval with President Michael Shulman appointing Jack Sinclair captain. Port have elected to play their home games at Docklands. Royal Blue and Red are the famous colours of Port Melbourne and will be worn in this league. Coupled with the Royal Blue and Red Stripes are Royal Blue Shorts and Royal Blue and Red Hooped Socks. In a change of tradition Port Melbourne will wear a Red jumper with a Royal PM monogram, White Shorts and the Home Socks in away game where there is a clash.

Sandgate, in the Northern Brisbane suburbs, was founded in 1943. Winning 8 premierships, the Seahawks have established themselves with a workmanlike approach to the game that gives them the impetus to match it with any team in the competition. With Luke Hodge appointed coach, President Jamie Charman secured the services of Dayne Zorko to Lemke Road to captain the club. The ‘Gabba will turn Green and Red on match days for the Seahawks. Wearing a Green guernsey with a Red Sash for home games, Green Shorts and Green and Red Hooped Socks, the Seahawks continue with their traditional uniform. Away, the Seahawks will wear a Light Gray jumper with a Double Green and Red Sash, White Shorts and White Socks with Green and Red Trim.

The Sunbirds were born when a second Brisbane franchise was required. Hoping to garner more support for the whole of the Southside of the River City, South Brisbane now have an opportunity to make an impact. Michael Voss was offered another chance to coach at senior level by marketing guru President Breeanne Brock. The ‘Birds have based themselves out of River Corso Park, formerly Leyshon Park, for training while playing home games at the ‘Gabba. Max Gawn has chosen the sunny climes of Queensland to ply his trade as ruckman and was also offered the captaincy, which he accepted. Orange and Purple are the colours of the Sunbird, and were adopted as the clubs official colours. At home, an Orange guernsey with a Purple SBFC lettermark across the torso will be worn, Purple Shorts along with Orange Socks with a Purple foldover. Away, the ‘Birds will wear a Purple jumper with Orange Wings and a Large SB Lettermark, White Shorts and Purple and Orange Hooped Socks complete the kit.

Founded in 1961, Southport were an instant success on the field. Continuing on from that, the Gold Coast’s club number one desire is to be on the national stage. The Sharks have built a dynasty on the Coast with facilities and premierships to match. The Sharks will play at Carrara while training will be based at their spiritual home, Fankhauser Oval. Nick Riewoldt could not pass up a chance to coach at senior level offered to him by President Marcus Ashcroft. So impressed are Southport with Matt Rowell they asked him if he would like to captain the club and signed on. The Sharks will again wear a White guernsey with a Black Chevron at home. Black Shorts and Black Socks complete the uniform. Southport have agreed to wear White Shorts and White Socks against Port Adelaide at home to avoid a clash. Southport’s away kit will be a Gold jumper with a Black Chevron and a Shark centred, White Shorts and White Socks with Black Trim will be worn.

With a massive war chest, the Melbourne Olympic Committee decided it was time to enter the professional sporting market. Winning the bud for a Melbourne franchise, the MOC duly named the team the 56ers in honour of the Games held in Melbourne in that year. Locked in we’re coach Adam Simpson, returning to Melbourne, and Dyson Heppell as captain. Chairman Steve Bracks stated Sporting were the Gold Standard in the competition this year. Training facilities will be provided at Toorak Park and home games will be played, of course, at the MCG. The home guernsey features the Olympic colours Black, Blue, Green, Red and Yellow in vertical Stripes, Sporting are hoping to capture the spirit of the Games with this jumper. Black Shorts and Black, Blue, Green, Red and Yellow Hooped Socks complete the uniform. In away games the Sixers with wear a White jumper with club colours in diagonal bands, White Shorts and White Sock with club coloured Trim.

Founded in 1896, Subiaco have amassed 15 premierships. The Pride of the North of the River Swan have been the envy of all clubs around the country for the tenacity which it has pulled itself out of almost extinction to win title after title. Subiaco Oval remains home base and training ground for the Subi, with home games being played at Perth Stadium. President Drew Banfield made an excellent signing of Matt Priddis as coach and former Subi boy Sam Menegola as captain. Maroon and Gold Stripes again take pride of place on the Subiaco home guernsey, along with Maroon Shorts and Maroon and Gold Hooped Socks. Subiaco’s away kit will be an Azure jumper with Maroon and Gold centred Stripes, Club Shield and Monogram, White Shorts and White Socks with Maroon and Gold Trim.

Torrens City won the crucial final spot for an Adelaide franchise. South Adelaide and Sturt joined forces to compete in the new league by combining talent and resources. The Torpedos have the backing of two strong clubs, with Simon Goodwin as coach and Nigel Smart as chairman, success looks assured. Brodie Grundy comes back to Unley as captain of the club. Home games to be played at Adelaide Oval. Navy Blue for South Adelaide and Azure for Sturt adding White for a Tricolour unite the two teams as Torrens City. Navy, White and Azure Hooped Socks complete the clubs home uniform. The Torps will wear a White jumper with a Double Blue- Navy and Azure- Sash. White Shorts and White Socks with Navy and Azure trim in Away games.

In a fantastic news for the SCFL the season was brilliant from beginning to end. In a crazy coincidence both conferences total points for were 25738. Perth United and Fremantle Athletic played out a thrilling draw in the first ever Sandgroper Derby. Sandgate had a purple patch to the end of the season winning 9 on the trot. Fitzroy was totally dominant all season only losing to Port Adelaide. Congratulations to both Launceston and Northern Territory for making the finals series. Fitzroy won the Commonwealth Conference final against Port Adelaide and Sandgate beat Port Melbourne in the Federation Conference to set up a Grand Final at the MCG.

SOUTHERN CROSS FOOTBALL LEAGUE GRAND FINAL

Executing Ross Lyon’s game plan to perfection, Fitzroy prevailed in a high scoring affair against Sandgate. Leading by 18 points at quarter time, Fitzroy’s captain Jack Gunston had kicked 4 goals and looked on track for a big haul. Sandgate looked good despite the deficit, the Royals having too much running. another 4 goals to Gunston in the second, Fitzroy didn’t want to celebrate too early. Langdon and Steele with multiple goals each in the third had the Royboys playing with freedom. The Seahawks had a lot of the ball also by the way of ball magnet Dayne Zorko. Fitzroy capitalised after the main break with 7 goals to five and Lyon was on his way to that elusive premiership. Sandgate won the final term 7 goals to two but it was the Boys from Brunswick Streets day and season. Gunston finished with 11 goals to be judged best afield to cap off that glorious one day in September for Fitzroy.

The first season of the SCFL is over and 2 clubs have decided not to continue, Albury felt the step up was to great and will be returning to the Ovens and Murray League. Therefore the commission have called for submissions from clubs to replace exiting teams. To replace Albury, East Geelong and Sandringham put there bids in.

The winning submission for next season will be EAST GEELONG GOLDWINGS.

The Goldwings were established in 1879, with over 140 years of history East were the perfect choice to give Geelong more football representation. Amassing 13 flags over the years, East are as consistent as a club can get when playing for higher honours. President Sean O’Leary gave first time coach Corey Enright the reins at East and signed on Mitch Duncan as captain. Wearing a Maroon guernsey with a Gold and Irange Chevron, East Geelong will continue to train at Richmond Crescent while playing matches at Kardinia Park. Maroon Shorts and Maroon Socks with Hold Orange Trim finish off the kit. For the Goldwings away strip the jumper will be White with the EG monogram, White Shorts and White Socks with Maroon and Gold Trim complete the uniform.

The second club deciding not to compete in the next season’s competition is South Brisbane. Tenders went out for submissions for a team to compete in the Federation Conference to replace the outgoing Sunbirds. The final two came down to:

And the winning submission will be the WILLIAMSTOWN FOOTBALL CLUB.

Football at Point Gellibrandhas been played there since 1864. The Seagulls have achieved success with 16 premierships and numerous stand out players. Brilliant recruiting and strong leadership have built the Seagulls into a formidable outfit. President Clint Rippon promises Williamstown will Stand and Deliver against opponents this season. Signing Brent Stanton as coach, Willy pulled off a major coup luring Lachie Hunter back to the club as captain. The distinctive Gold Sash on Royal Blue gives the Town an aura of well deserved supremacy. Along with the home guernsey the Seagulls will wear Royal Shorts and Royal and Gold Hooped Socks. The ‘Gulls away jumper will be an inverse of the home with a Royal Sash on Gold, White Shorts and White Socks with Royal and Gold Trim.

Congratulations to Williamstown for next season and we hope to see Garden State back again soon.

Perth, East Perth and West Perth all decided it was time to put aside rivalries and become one entity. The Blue Devils came about after coming to the conclusion that a united Perth would be the strongest possible club to achieve Premiership success in the new league. The Devils training ground is at Arena Joondalup and will play home games at Perth Stadium. Sam Mitchell gets his chance at a senior coaching position at United along with goal kicking sensation Jack Darling as captain, chairman Craig Turley believes he has the right team in place for success. Cobalt Blue, Red and Black all represent a United club from the merged teams. The home guernsey is predominantly Cobalt with Red and Black Bars, Cobalt Shorts and Cobalt, Red and Black Hooped Socks will be worn. The Devils will wear an Ochre guernsey away with Cobalt, Red and Black Vees with the Trident centred. White Short and Ochre Socks with Cobalt, Red and Black Trim finish the kit.

UNSUCCESSFUL FRANCHISE BIDS:

Up against Mandurah, Albany’s bid for a team in the initial league was unsuccessful this time. Playing and training out of The Barracks, Albany plan to go into battle at every game. The Armoury will wear a White guernsey with Teal Stripes at home, reminiscent of the waves crashing into the coast at Albany. Accompanied by Teal Shorts and Teal and White Hooped Socks, this small town wanted to be in the big league to show the City how the Country plays the game.

Completing against the ultimate grand finalists, Sandgate, Aspley went so close in securing a spot in the inaugural league. Established in 1964, the Hornets have been a mainstay of Queensland footy. Winning 9 premierships along the way, Aspley have proven they can any competition a real sting. The boys from Graham Road will keep wearing the Brown and Gold Hoops. Brown Shorts and Brown and Gold Hooped Socks complete the uniform. The Hornets would have turned the ‘Gabba into The Nest for match days.

Eastlake lost their franchise bid to the Canberra Colts, having a bit of an identity crisis over the years going from the Swans, to the Eagles then the Demons, Eastlake have finally settled on the Kingfishers. Emerging around 1926, East built themselves into a formidable club. Eighteen flags say Eastlake are a force to be reckoned with when reaching higher honours. The Kingfishers wanted to stamp themselves as a club with a vision to succeed and with that; to the pinnacle of Australian football. Training at Kingston Oval, Eastlake would have worn a new strip in a Orange guernsey with a Cobalt Blue Sash, Cobalt Shorts and Cobalt and Orange Hooped Socks.

Up against North Adelaide, Kensington came up just short in its bid in the inaugural season. An instant rival to Norwood, the Terriers would have been embarking on a journey to greatness by joining the league. Home base is Kensington Oval and the club would have worn a Sorrel guernsey with a White Band, White Shorts and Sorrel Socks with a White Band.

Competing with the Hobart Hellcats for the capital’s team, Clarence just missed out. Founded in 1884, the Chargers have accumulated 15 premierships on becoming one of the most successful clubs in the State. Clarence will continue to wear their Red V on White jumper at home, Red Shorts and Red and White Hooped Socks. Bellerive Oval wad to be their home ground and training base.

Stalwarts of Queensland football, Morningside was competing for a spot with South Brisbane. The club was founded in 1947, with a lot of recent premiership success, the Jags have been irrepressible in their motivation to play at the highest level. With 9 flags to their name, Morningside are setting the benchmark. The Jaguars will continue to train at Jack Esplen Oval while matchday facilities would have been provided by the ‘Gabba. The Siders would have worn and Orange, White and Navy Tricolour guernsey at home, Navy Shorts and Navy Socks with Orange and White Trim.

St Mary’s were bidding for a franchise against the Northern Territory club. This powerhouse club have been setting the benchmark in Top End footy since 1952. With 63 out of 65 finals appearances, coupled with 32 premierships, the Martyrs with incredible 72% strike rate would definitely have made their mark in this league. St Mary’s train and play at Marrara. At home, the Martyrs will wear their Green guernsey with the SM Lettermark in Gold. Green Shorts and Green and Gold Hooped Socks.

Sandhurst were up against the might of Port Melbourne in trying to secure a franchisee spot. The Dragons are stalwarts of Bendigo footy, they were founded in 1861. Along with 27 premierships, Sandhurst are consistently in finals series. The front office are one of the key reasons for Sandhurst’s sustained success. Playing and training will continue at Queen Elizabeth II Oval. Sandhurst would have worn their Maroon guernsey with a Navy Yoke and White SFC Monogram. White Shorts and Maroon Socks with a Navy foldover would have finished off this classic.
