Did anyone read the piece in todays paper about North Melbourne approaching the Southport Sharks about moving to Queensland.

Interesting to say the least.

We are members at Southport, the last time we were there for a meal, I asked about their prospects of being an AFL club. I was told by 2 different people that they were assured of playing in the AFL in the near future. I assumed though that it was the Saints who would relocate, after their presidents comments on Footy Feedback.

We have all heard the rumours for a couple of years now about Southport gunning for a piece of the action.

Only problem is can QLD support 2 teams? At present the Gold Coast is a big source of support for the Lions, so the AFL would want to be careful a relocated club was not jumping from the frying pan into the fire.

Couldnt see it for 10 years myself, esp as the Ch9 $$$$$$ payoff will mean the short term survival of Melb clubs.

Anna,

St Kilda have no intention of relocating to Southport. For some reason, we are the club that always seem to be linked with them. There are five or six Victorian teams in a similar financial situation. Why us? I don't know, maybe because the name Southport Saints go together well.

Anyway, Rod Butterss simply used it as a threat to help increase our membership base. A move interstate scares the hell out of a lot of Victorian supporters. As of March 2 our membership was just under 15,500 so we are on target for a huge improvement over last years figures.

I'd be interested to know what newspaper the article about the roos is because it should make an interesting read. I would have thought they would give Canberra a good go before looking further north.

I hope the Roos do it, even though I kind of expected them to stick with the West Sydney/Canberra prospect. I had pictured the Bulldogs winding up in Southport. Take the Southport offer while it's there, Roos. And with the kind of demographic growth there is in QLD I think it won't crowd the Lions. The Southport infrastructure/membership is already there, not to mention the Gabba. But the Saints? I doubt they'd ever relocate. They have tonnes of supporters hiding away somewhere in the woodwork who would rally the moment something like that was floated.
