What a great effort by south Melbourne Travelling to Paramatta Stadium and coming away with a draw.

Parramatta Power 0 South Melbourne 0

Parramatta Power made all the running but were lucky to escape with a draw against South Melbourne in the NSL at Parramatta Stadium.

"We were lucky not to lose and an outstanding save by keeper Clinton Bolton kept us in the game," Parramatta coach Nick Theodorakopoulos said.

Although Parramatta were sharp and dominant in attack for most of the opening half, South Melbourne had the two best chances. They should have taken the lead in the second minute when striker Vaughan Coveny in open space in the penalty area pushed his shot across the face of the goal.

It took until a minute before half-time for South Melbourne to get close again when Con Boutsianis was also left unmarked but Bolton bravely blocked his close range shot.

New signings Simon Colosimo and Fernando Rech constantly worried the South Melbourne defence which was weakened when injured veteran defender Mehmet Durakovic was replaced in the 19th minute. Colosimo twice rattled South Melbourne within two minutes with a long-range shot tipped away for a corner and a chip which nestled on the top of the net.

"Durakovic has a hamstring injury and could be out four to five weeks. We'll know better after further examinations," said South Melbourne coach Stuart Munro. "Parramatta have a very strong and mobile midfield and will be a force in the league this season."

Whereas Parramatta forced the issue in the first half, South Melbourne took charge in the second session. Defender Levent Osman held the back line together while Coveny was dangerous each time he got the ball. In the final 10 minutes, Parramatta took chances in moving forward and almost paid the penalty as South Melbourne staged a series of counter attacks.

"Munro made me think and forced me to return to a starting tactic in the last 10 minutes," Theodorakopoulos said. "Their ability to counter-attack gave us a strong message but it was a good point for us. We have to be prepared for most sides to come here and sit back and we have to score early."

Parramatta will have a free weekend in the next round as the new Adelaide team completes its preparation and the Power has organised two friendlies next weekend.

Best time to play Parramatta was first game of the year with all their new players still getting to know each other. Didn't see the game - it clashed with the Swans game - but it sounds like South were unlucky not to steal a win. I'm feeling very optimistic about South's chances this season :)

Yeah I mentioned in one of the other threads that once power gel together and start playing like a well oiled machine alot of other teams are gonna have to look out. But still a great effort to come away with a point after travelling to Paramatta.
