Does it just keep going forever?

Surely you get to the end somewhere...how can something keep going forever?

What the hell is space?

For all we know there could be a million other planets just like Earth, with people just like us, it's ridiculous.

What do you think?

To think we are the only life forms in the entire universe is ignorant. We are but one planet in one solar system, in one galaxy. There are literally trillions and trillions of galaxies in the universe. To think we are the only forms of life out of all those galaxies out there is a little bit silly IMO.

There's no doubt there'd be other forms of life out there somewhere. But whether or not they are as advanced as us is debatable. It's taken us yonks and yonks to finally get where we are. Scientists believe the odds another life form has evolved the way we did is just some huge mofo number.

But no, not me... I believe the truth is out there! :p

Absolutely. The only life forms out there could be tiny amoeba floating around in a pond on some distant planet. Who knows. Then again, there could be advanced beings that make us look primitive. Scientists say that if the whole history of the universe was put into the scale of a clock, then humans have been around since 11:59pm.

The universe is apparently constantly expanding. Who knows what lies outside it though?

No doubt that there are millions of other Earth-like planets. I agree that there is little doubt that there is life out there - I couldn't see how there is though. Intelligent life, or life similar to us, is another story. Homo Sapiens has, as Bill Bryson elegantly describes in his A Short History of Nearly Everything, developed in a period of relatively real global calm. Ie we are overdue for a Yellowstone supervolcano eruption that could certainly be a potential extinction event.

Still, with the odds involved, it's not inconceivable that at some time in the history of the universe there may have been or may be intelligent life out there similar to us.

I reckon it'd be more like 11:59:59, and even then the scales'd be way off.

Google: Fermi Paradox

if the universe is expanding wouldn't that mean it has boundries ?

I was always told that the chances of any life similar to ours is virtually none as the chances of everything aligning like it has for us is very low. (ie sun right distance, planet made of the right thing, cells mutating correctly, moon being placed so well etc etc)

Yes the universe is still expanding meaning there are no defined boundaries as yet, as it is still getting bigger. I think it is the Big Crunch theory that states that eventually, gravity will drag back the expansion of the universe upon itself?

No. It's hard to comprehend, but due to the time/space continuum, space is curved, so the universe is probably more like a ball enclosed on itself, but not just in 3 dimensions - for eg quantum physics has demonstrated states of 11 dimensions and more.

But that still doesn't mean there's boundaries, as outside of the universe there are no conditions that are needed for there to be something, if that makes sense.

Of course, there may be other universes, but conceptually impossible to know

Yes, the chances are low. But the universe is, for all intents and purposes - an approximation of infinity. Therefore there are probably plenty of planets just tuned enough for life.

Thermodynamic paradox states that for the universe to be infinite it has to be infinitely old. We know that due to big bang theory, the universe is finitely old therfore finite, yet expanding.

I didn't say the universe is infinite though. It's just an approximation given its vast size compared to the tiny size of our earth.

Only if its a one off event The birth of the Universe I read somewhere was energy neutral, it could be an infinite cycle Bang > expanding universe >Bang

We are a relatively young planet on a young star so chances are we are the youngens

Depends. If the universe was created by the big bang then for every action there is an equal or opposite reaction. The opposite reaction to the big bang is the big crunch. Then again depending of the amount of dark matter, then the universe can expand infinitely.
