Before the game vs England the Spanish coach referred to Thierry Henry as a ni gger. There was no pressure at all for him to resign and he didnt even apologise to Henry. During the game every time a black English player touched the ball large sections of the ground starting doing chimp impersonations. This regularly happens to black players with English clubs in the Champions league in much of Europe.

Can you imagine an AFL coach referring to someone in this manner and getting away with it? I can not recall a situation where I have been at an AFL match and a player has been racially abused by the crowd at the MCG or Telstra.

For those who think Australia is chronically racist, this is just another example to show that in comparison to other countries we are very tolerant.

Exactly spot on. I think Australia and most other predominantly Anglo-Saxon countries are in fact far more tolerant of other races and cultures than anybody else.

It's true that racism is rife in a several European stadiums, it's not as bad in England as it was a couple of decades ago (likewise hooliganism has died down in England but if anything has become a serious problem in Italy and Eastern Europe).

Disgraceful from the spanish.

especially considering that so many spanish carry north african blood lines.

obvious physical markers (melanin production, curly hair, dark skin etc) plus non physical markers such as DNA markers, resistance to malaria, blood types etc.

Racism is still a problem in the world, and the spanish effort was pathetic.

shame on the crowd.

Dan, my question was about Australian racism. Not Spanish racism, which I have no doubt exists and is probably quite widespread. I didn't see the soccer, but I don't doubt that it was as bad as has been described.

The post you quoted, however, isn't concerned specifically with Spanish racism. It is concerned with Australian racism, as is Medusala's contention.

I'm with you on this one, just because another country is more racist than us is no excuse in the slightest for racism or tolerism of racism in Australia.

Spanish racism is wrong, intolerable and has zero relevance to racism in Australia. But why does it not surprise me that it was medusala who brought this topic up.

It happened often at Vic Park, Winmar raising his jumper was a famous occasion.

Medusala didnt use his post to excuse Australian racism. He merely pointed out that compared to Spains actions, we are not an overly racist country.

Talk about reading crap into peoples posts

While i find the spanish coach's attitude unacceptable,REMEMBER that pommy soccer fans are still responsible for more atrocities then spanish fans are.

How big and enlightened we are to be so "tolerant" of other races. What fabulous human beings we are to allow these other races to exist without killing them for daring to be other than pure white. No wonder this world is so fantastic when magnificent contributors to society like Medusala will be so "tolerant" of other races. Why should we have to be "tolerant", we should be no different in our attitude to other races than we are to any person. Now all we need is the line about how some of your best friends are gay, aboriginal, hispanic, asian etc.

Many of those spaniards are shocking the way they treat visiting countries - from soccer to tennis and heck knows what else. Racism will probably always be alive here (unfortunatley) but the way the spanish can act is nothing short of disgraceful.

Racism in colour, religion, politics, and sexual preference will never end while there are humans wandering this planet.

Try as we may, but the leftists will never win the battle and the extreme right will always encourage it.

Nor is this a generalisation. :)

So you take the pss!! So what..fragile minded idiots. Do you really think anyone in that crowd really hated blacks?

Just a footy game...with passion deeper than Australians can imagine..but about winning..not race.

I can tell you that there are racists in the audience and at least used to be INSIDE football teams.

ALthough a st kilda supporter I used to have a friend that played for NM and was told of some the things that went on in that team to make Adrian Mcadam uncomfortable to say the least. Things have obviously changed a lot on the past 10 years.

WIth most teams bending over to get quality indiginiuos aussies to their teams it has been reduced.

Racism from the crowd is still rampant.

I've heard some foul stuff from collingwood suppporters aimed at opposition players AND their own, but to their credit other collingwood supporters told them to get swearword swearword

same thing happened from essendung, carlton, wce, dees, even my own saints supporters.

you'll never get rid of racists, but it is on the decline.

Society's problems only manifest itself on the sporting field and in the stands. As much as any sort of racial abuse is abhorrent, the media will always highlight a few incidents and make a big deal out of them.

Sadly, you're never going to eliminate racism by telling everyone "you be good boys and just get along". It doesn't work that way. Because everyone, whether we'll admit it or not, is going to be prejudiced to some degree or another.

Furthermore, the problem of racism will only be excaberated if governments, etc continue to vex the majority on sensitive issues and not take their concerns into account, which is EXACTLY what's happened in the UK and Europe, and hence racism is allowed to fester there.

Like what? Saying SBS should be scrapped and multicuturalism doesnt work?

Its a simple point saying that in comparison to other countries Australia is not as bad as some make out. You do understand comparison?

If you mean NZ as a eg,then i'd disagree. The Maori have more respect from the average pakheha Kiwi then a aborigine has from a white australian.

I think you could make a good case that Maoris are better looked after than any other "indigenous" people, though they still have their issues.

re compared to other countries I would say Singapore and Hong Kong of the places I have lived are worse than the UK or Australia. They make in plain in recruiting that they want people of a certain race. They treat their non Chinese domestic staff in a manner that most people wouldnt even contemplate. Asian mags wont put black models on the covers of magasines because they know they wont sell and I could go on and on.

I havent claimed Australia is perfect, its just that we arent as bad as people make out. I copped it again last saturday from a pom claiming how aborigines never got to any high positions in Australia. He then pointed out the acting England rugby captain was black. Well thats only 20 years behind Australia when the legendary Mark Ella was appointed captain at a very young age, not to mention Mal Meninga. How many asians are there in the EPL even though they make up over 5% of the population. The big Roy.

I know a white Australian who lives in Thailand, cant get citizenship though he's lived there for 8 years and every few months has to spend time in Malaysia before returning to Thailand.

Did I miss the post where someone mentioned what happened in the Blackburn Rovers v Birmingham game on the weekend? Every time Dwight Yorke went near the ball, the Blackburn fans made monkey noises. Wheres the English racism thread?

It was an isolated incident and abuse towards Yorke was inevitable, I think they've made a big deal about it.

Besides, racism from a section of Blackburn (or any other NW English club) support shouldn't be totally surprising, especially if you've see for yourself what it's really like up there.

So it's ok for English soccer supporters, but not for Spainish?
