I've got family in Shepp who have worked for SPC for decades, so this hits close to home. I don't know exactly what their situation is here, but it does make it a little harder to be objective.

Still, a company like Coca-Cola Amatil asking for a handout seems a bit rich, so I hope they have a long hard look about how they want to operate the cannery without having to rely on a bailout. Asking the workers to make the sacrifice seems too harsh, but may be necessary in order to keep those jobs I guess.

CCA have asked for a contribution from both Fed & State Govts.

CCA were willing to put in $90 million, the idea being that two Govts would for the good of all in the G.V contribute an amount to keep a large part of Vic off the dole queues.

Political ideology and a smug need to differentiate themselves from previous Lib and Lab persuasions sees this as another mean spirited, opinion poll driven response that both these parties have played the past decade.

The sooner the seat of Murray becomes a marginal seat instead of the safest in the nation the better...but then again, you vote for conservatives to that extent for that long, you get what you voted for.

CCA FY2012

Revenue: $5b
EBIT: $895m
Profit: $558m
Dividend: 32c per share

Either SPC-A is unviable and they want a sugar hit, or (as seems more likely) they intend to keep it going and are playing the 'community needs us' card to get the govt to chip in.

Who knows @Scotland....

FWIW, in today's AGE there is an article on the trial of the BASICS card for Centrelink recipients in Shepparton whereby a certain part of the benefit is frozen to be sent at certain shops...no booze, smokes etc.

The cost for the trial per site....$23 million.

Go figure.
