I'm 15 and trying to be an afl player btw. Kicking is the worst part of my game.

First couple of things to look for with accuracy are your ball drop and how your leg swings - if you're kicking 50m at 15 you're probably kicking through the ball and kicking from the hips so I'd get someone (maybe your dad, coach, brother, senior player at your club) to have a look and see how those two things are going.

If your ball drop is too high it'll decrease your consistency and accuracy, if you leg isn't following a relatively straight line when you kick your accuracy will again be inconsistent.

If your kicking is a weakness, you may as well start working on your non-preferred too.

Recently ive wondered what is the most important part of kicking.

There are 2 types IMO. 1 is set shots and penalties where a kicker can pretty much go through a routine. This can be practiced as there is little 'interference' with the kicker.

The second type of kick is usually or always taken on the run, with a decision for directing or target having to be made instantly. A player may have to choose from a variety of kicks, decide which foot to use, spot a target, judge the distance etc, all in a split second.

Depending on what position you play, the relevance of kicking style is more important to practice. If you are a forward, style 1 probably suits you the most. If you are a midfielder, style 2 is more likely what you need to practice.

I saw a young bloke the other day kicking with his dad. Slow methodical kicking with both feet from a standing position. The kid can really kick. But that is not what happens in game situations. He is being turned into an 'artist' when the position he plays demands a 'footballer'.

Kicking is the most important skill. But the game demands you can do it in many different situations, not only going through a routine and kicking straight from a set position, but on the move, under tackle pressure, both feet, correct instant decisions, etc.

Tall forwards may practice being an artist. But most others must be 'footballers' .

There is a lot of stuff you can practice besides kicking. Picking the ball up clean 1st time every time. Tackling correctly, swapping the ball in your hands and palming both hands, hit and spin both ways (spinning towards the open) stepping off both feet, (small step one way, bigger one the other), marking, smothering, and of course, fitness.
