Anecdotally it's harder to get boys to read, my take is that it's not harder at all, there are just a lot less titles aimed at them, so these broaden that range which is a good thing. I'm not sure why you'd get all picky about it's literary merits either, any title that claims Gary Lyon as co-author is unlucky to feature in the Booker longlist.
Alfred Hitchcock and the Three Investigators, now that was a cool series of books.
